Cirque Du Soleil’s dazzling
Saltimbanco steals the show

IT was a memorable evening for
hundreds of Doha fans at Aspire
Dome on Wednesday. They were
treated to a wonderful performance
by Canadian-based Cirque Du
Soleil’s 20-year-old signature production,
‘Saltimbanco’.
The show at the popular arena —
which was packed with a multinational
audience — featured an
international cast of 51 performers
and musicians from more than 20
countries.
Live artistes enthralled the crowd
with performances like near impossible
balancing, jumping and spinning
acts on the Chinese poles or the
Russian wing. There was gravitydefying
bungees, trapeze, juggling
and acrobatic performances on bicycle.
One of the show’s highlights was
the witty remarks and the humorous
interventions by clowns during serious
acts by other artistes.
Spectacular costumes, amazing
lighting and mesmerising music
were the other highlights.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune during
a rehearsal earlier on Wednesday,
42-year-old RJ Owens, the ringmaster,
said, “We train every day to keep

The show began with a presentation
from the house troupe. The
presentation was followed by
‘Adagio’ — marked with strength,
flexibility and three acrobats coming
together to create amazing shapes
and sizes. The Chinese poles were
marked by multi-coloured performers
who slipped on the stage and
then climbed around seven-metretall
poles to symbolise the skyscrapers
of Saltimbanco. They then
jumped from one pole to the other.
Performer Terry Velasquez juggled
up to eight balls creating various
forms and figures. Other artistes balanced
on canes and created a series
of figures. As if that was not enough!
Two performers twirled boleadoras
in the air and bounced off weight on
the ground, making explosive noises
in unison. The show also included
other breathtaking acts that left the
audience spellbound.
“It was a fantastic evening. I loved
the way performers were tied to
bungees, swing and dropped and
flew in the air. The show was spectacular,”
said a British national. “It
was nice to watch performers sway
on a trapeze. Hope such kind of
events would be held more often,”
said a fan.
The word ‘Saltimbanco’ has been
derived from the Italian phrase
‘Saltare in banco’. It means ‘to
jump on the bench’. The four-day
event will conclude on July 7. Two
shows will be held every day at 4pm
and 8pm, respectively.

THE Pearl-Qatar has
recently conducted training
sessions for staff in the use
of a hi-tech mobile water
supply system as part of its
commitment to safety and
security on the island.
High ranking officials
from the Civil Defense
authority took part in the
training sessions with team
members from Glitter and
The Shield, both fully
owned subsidiaries of
United Development
Company (UDC), developer
of The Pearl. The island’s
health, safety and environment
(HSE) officers also
took part in the exercise.
The advanced mobile
water supply system, developed
by Hytrans Fire System,
includes two Mercedes
Axor hook arm trucks, a
HydroSub 900, Powerfoam,
portable water supply
equipment and power
supply. It is designed to
pump water from any open
water supply to fight fire.
“This system is ideal for
efficient fire fighting in a
water-bound environment
like The Pearl,” said
Abdullah Muhammed al
Suwaidi from the Civil
Defense. “In major fire
emergencies, the main
issue is always water flow
and pressure, access, time
and distance. Therefore, it
is always necessary to be
able to pump from open
water sources and this system
allows us to do that.”
Saeed al Sulaiti, general

Shield and HSE at The
Pearl-Qatar said the new
system was part of UDC’s
commitment to create and
maintain a safe, secure
and clean environment on
the island.
“This system can pump
thousands of litres of water
to an area when needed in
an emergency. By deploying
the latest technology

already stationed on the
island and the water supply
system will be stored in

University hosted a magical
evening at Katara recently.
The event was full of magic
tricks and dance performances.
It was organised by the
‘Universal Events’.
The ‘Magical Night’ was hosted
as part of the International
Business and Management
Studies (IBMS) programme
of Stenden University Qatar.
The study programme
has recently been approved
by the Supreme Education
Council of Qatar.
This four-year bachelor
programme is taught in
English and its European
degree is recognised in Qatar
and globally. Admission is
open till the end of August

the successful conclusion of
its annual staff gathering, an
event designed to show the
company’s appreciation for
the contribution of its
employees to its success.
A number of activities took
place during the programme,
including team-building exercises,
as well as an awards
ceremony which honoured 15
members of staff.
QPM Chairman Ahmad
Abdulla al Abdulla addressed
the gathering, informing
associates of the company of
its vision, mission and strategy.
Acting Chief Executive
Officer Fahed al Asmakh
emphasised the quality of the
team QPM employs and highlighted
the ongoing 2012-
2013 roadmap.
QPM’s vision, according to
al Asmakh, is to be a leading
provider of world class project
management services in
the region, and it aims to
achieve this through its mission
to capture a large share
of the regional project management
market and expand
its portfolio through its
diverse pool of high-calibre
talent and track record of
achievement.
The overall strategy that
QPM intends to apply to its
business in the medium- and
long-term is one of ambitious
expansion and growth in both
domestic and international
arenas.
Al Asmkah said, “The annual
gathering of QPM’s associates

‘From Katara with Love’
raises funds for charity

‘FROM Katara with Love’, the
three-day event aimed at promoting
Qatari arts and crafts
while contributing half of net
earnings to local charity,
ended on Saturday.
Speaking with Qatar
Tribune, Al Jazi Hassan,
Katara marketing and international
affairs coordinator,
noted that “its a fundraising
event by different Qatari talents,
and that’s why its called
‘From Katara With Love’”.
The word Katara was used
to refer to Qatar hundreds of
years ago.
“Exhibitors here showing
off their clothes, hand-made
products, food, and all kinds
of market wares are selling
them and 50 percent of what
they make will go to the
Sanad Charity”, Hassan
explained.
Sanad is a local charity
founded in 2010 by local
youth. The organisation came
to be through a competition
that Qatar Charity held to
encourage local charity initiatives.
The winners went on to
found Sanad. The charity
focuses on helping local families
in need, and also offers
programmes for workers in
the country, offering them
iftar during Ramadan, and
distributing water bottles to
them in the hot months of
summer.
‘From Katara With Love’ is
actually the brainchild of Al
Jazi, who recalled that “I proposed
this event to the president,
and he was very keen on
it, seeing that it benefits really
everyone involved; the recipients
of the funds which are
going to charity, Qataris who
are displaying their talents
and of course the general
public, because there is really
a lot of items to look through
here.
Hassan hopes to eventually
organise a series of such
events.
She added that “we are
hoping this is not just a onetime
event, but a tradition,
where we can bring up new
talents in business, poetry,
arts, and give them the opportunity
to participate in this
kind of event.”
The event also included a
traditional Qatari poetry
night, where both established
and up-and-coming poets
recited their works, and an art
exhibition by local artists.
