Amesbury
Historic Amesbury - the Home of Stonehenge
E5
Amesbury is the town where history and Stonehenge began, the
oldest continuous settlement in Britain. Start your visit with
refreshments at Solstice Park and meet the mighty Ancestor
representing the earliest settlers in Amesbury almost 10,000
years ago. Not far away at Archers Gate you can see the town’s
rich heritage depicted through a community mosaic, along with
an impressive recreation of the famous Amesbury Archer – found
nearby. The town centre welcomes visitors with many independent
and unique shops, two coach friendly bays and free parking close
to the Community and Visitor Centre (open Monday-Saturday)
with information on places to visit, shop, eat, drink and stay.
The Ancestor
Wednesday is market day. The Museum in Church Street (opening
times vary), is where the story of Stonehenge is told and home to
one of the country’s largest collections of Mesolithic tools. The
10th century church of St Mary and St Melor is Amesbury’s oldest
building and houses a 1777 organ, 15th century clock, crusader
crosses and royal floor tiles and tells the story of Queen Eleanor
of Provence, who was given a royal funeral in Amesbury in 1291.
Famous hostelries include the Antrobus Arms where The Beatles
stayed whilst filming Help on Salisbury Plain and the 13th century
George Hotel which houses Amesbury’s Aviation Heritage Museum.
As England’s oldest borough, with a history dating back over
1,000 years, Malmesbury is rightly called the ‘Queen of Hilltop
the first king of all England. Next to the Abbey are the delightful
Abbey House Gardens.
From the ancient Market Cross, tour our individual high street
shops and enjoy a meal in one of our friendly cafés, pubs and
restaurants. Pick up a Walker’s Guide to Malmesbury leaflet from
the Tourist Information Centre in the Town Hall to have a guided
tour of the town, or take the River Walk that encircles the town
to enjoy wonderful views. On the outskirts (next to the A429) is
an alpaca breeding farm ‘Abbey View Alpacas’ where visitors are
welcome to walk by and see the friendly animals.
The Stonehenge Tour
F5
Stonehenge is the best-known prehistoric monument in Europe. It
endures as a source of inspiration and fascination and, for many, a
place of worship and celebration. Stonehenge now has transformed
visitor facilities, with a new world-class visitor centre housing museumquality
permanent and temporary exhibitions, plus a spacious shop
and café at Airman’s Corner, 2km from the Stone Circle. At the Stone
Circle a sense of context and dignity is returned to the monument;
Stonehenge now reunited with its ancient approach, the Avenue,
and the surrounding landscape open for exploration. Entrance to
Stonehenge is managed through timed tickets, and advance booking
is strongly advised. Prebooking is the only way to guarantee entry on
the day and at the time of your choice; there is only limited walk-up
availability on the day.
Journey back in time to discover Stonehenge, probably the most
sophisticated stone circle in the world. Our hop-on hop-off tour
picks up in Salisbury city centre and the railway station, runs to Old
Sarum, then on through the beautiful Wiltshire countryside to the
magnificent, magical henge.
For the ultimate Salisbury experience The Stonehenge Tour also
takes in Salisbury Cathedral and Magna Carta. You can buy an
Young Gallery, Salisbury
F5
In 1913 Edwin Young gave Salisbury funds to build an art gallery.
His bequest also included his own art works – watercolours of
Salisbury and environs, a unique record of Victorian and Edwardian
life. Today they’re complemented by a growing collection of
watercolours representing all periods and styles. Artists include Albert
Goodwin, John Nash, Gilbert Spencer and Fujio Akai. In 1979 the
collection was offset by the John Creasey Collection – more than
2,000 of his crime and thriller books, and other items reflecting his
life. Enhancing the bequest is a collection of modern art, from artists
such as Henry Moore, David Hockney, Emma McNally, Elizabeth
Blackadder and Fay Godwin. Other collections include the Robin
Tanner archive, works by Edgar Barclay and Mick Maslen. Exhibitions
featuring the permanent collection, guest artists and community
groups are held throughout the year.
Bill’s Restaurant
Bill’s Salisbury is a gem of a restaurant. Formerly a pub, we
transformed the interior to give it a real Bill’s zing. Careful to
retain and restore any original features, the restaurant is a mix
of low beams, salvaged pieces, leather club chairs and sofas and
chandeliers. A stroll away from Salisbury Cathedral, it has plenty
of seating inside as well as lots more space across two new
courtyards. There’s always a great atmosphere and the restaurant
CYCLING
Cycling at Milk Hill
Cycle Routes
Whether you are a seasoned expert, an enthusiastic amateur, or just
starting out you will find plenty of cycle routes to choose from in Wiltshire.
Mountain bikers can opt for an easy ride such as those around Longleat,
or tackle one of our more challenging downland tracks, with rough
terrain and steep inclines.
Families may like to sample The Golden Way – A short circular ride
through part of the Avon Valley and round the eastern edge of Salisbury.
The towpath of the Kennet & Avon Canal, makes an ideal cycle route
across the centre of the county, taking in numerous places of interest
along the way.
National Route 4 of the National Cycle Network, connecting Great
Bedwyn on the eastern borders of Wiltshire with Bradford on Avon in
the west of the county, is a key route through Wiltshire.
Part of National Route 4, and largely traffic free, the North Wiltshire
Rivers Route links Melksham, Lacock, Chippenham, Calne, Cherhill
and Avebury through a diverse and beautiful natural landscape.
The Wiltshire Cycleway threads its way through Wiltshire along quiet
country lanes and passes many of the county’s most attractive places
to visit. The 160-mile cycle route is supplemented by a network of
shorter loops offering a wide choice of distance and terrain.
Avon Valley Explorer: Follow the Avon River from the Vale of the White
Horse via Stonehenge and Old Sarum to Salisbury Cathedral.
Wylye Valley Explorer: From Salisbury and Wilton House along the
back road through the Wylye Valley, past some of Wiltshire’s finest
chalk downland to the market town of Warminster.
Salisbury Plain Explorer: Cycle the range from Westbury White Horse to
the Pewsey Vale. From tanks to wild orchids, explore this unique cycle
route around the Imber and Larkhill military ranges.
Woodford Valley Circuit: Explore some of Wiltshire’s finest villages,
archaeology of Old Sarum and Stonehenge.
Wood then descend into the tranquil Wylye Valley for refreshments and
an easy ride home. Choose from the long or short option to suit your time.
The Avon Valley Explorer, Wylye Valley Explorer and Salisbury Plain
Explorer can be combined for a spectacular three-day circular
navigation of south Wiltshire.
historic market town. Challenge yourself with the heroic 100-mile
route which will take you to almost every corner of Wiltshire; opt for a
gentler 45-mile route; or for families with younger children there’s a
great 12-mile ride exploring the peaceful Vale of Pewsey.
Cricklade Cycling Festival: Sunday 14 September. The Via Roma
Sportive is a non-competitive event and has 40-mile or 80-mile routes
to choose from through the beautiful Cotswold countryside.
Wiltshire Sportive: Sunday 26 October. An increasingly popular area
for cyclists, the Wiltshire Downs offer spectacular riding in an area
steeped in history. This ride is predominantly undulating countryside
but will, of course, throw up a few hills along the way. It takes in
some of the best landmarks in the area, including the famous
Wiltshire White Horses. The Vale of Pewsey and the Marlborough
Downs provide some classic English scenery, whilst the natural
gradients of the land will both challenge and reward riders with
deceptive climbs and quick descents.
