THE IMPRESSIONISTS:
MASTERPIECES FROM
THE MUSÉE D’ORSAY
NGV INTERNATIONAL
17.06.04–26.09.04
In still life paintings, artists could explore how to
use the colours and paint. They didn’t have to worry
about changing light, or moving subjects. Still life
paintings are usually painted indoors.
Artists share ideas and learn from each other.
Look how these artists have used their colours and
brush marks to paint everyday people and places.
See what these artists did next… the colours are
bold and the shapes have become more important
in the painting where the workers are building
haystacks.
Finally to a place that is quiet and warm and the
lights will soon be out. Perhaps I could even hide a
bone. The cupboard would be perfect.
Can you find?
A painting in a painting
Something sharp
Shadows full of colour
Something you would like to eat
At home...
Arrange some objects on a table and paint or draw
them. Try drawing them from different angles.
This is a portrait, a picture of a person.
What do you think she would be like?
There is another portrait painted by the same artist.
Find it and compare.
Can you name two things that are the same?
Can you name two things that are different?
Match the shapes with the shapes in the picture.
At home...
Use some of these shapes in your own picture.
What time do you think it is in the painting?
What room do you think the girl is in?
So, good bye! Thank you for coming on this journey
to new places. I’ll dream of places in France, of
Impressionist paintings, of wonderful people and of
course of all the dogs along the way.
BONJOUR IMPRESSIONNISTES!
Bonjour my name is Lucille, come
with me through The Impressionists:
Masterpieces from the Musée d’Orsay.
A party, what a way to start! Such an elegant event
where people are dressed for a special occasion
with men in suits of black and ladies in gowns of
lace.
A concert, another special event.
The orchestra is playing for the ballet dancers
performing on the lit stage.
This is a much quieter place. Mother is watching
over the sleeping baby. She is safe and snug
tucked in her cradle.
Time for exercise in the outdoors where the
Impressionists loved to paint. They painted in plein
air to capture the light and they had to paint quickly
before it got dark.
The Impressionists also painted the city, a place of
buildings, bustling crowds and traffic. They painted
the feeling and mood of places.
Peep through the VIEW FINDER to look at the
details of the paintings...
see the colours and brush marks.
VIEW FINDER
What else can you see?
Careful! Don’t stand too close to the art works!
Let me introduce you
to some of my favourite
paintings. Look out for other
dogs (les chiens) along the
way and the best place to
hide a bone!
Tear here to separate the VIEW FINDER
Stand in front of the painting and find:
Two blue gowns
Two chandeliers and their reflections
Four fans
Five windows
Five chairs
One marble statue
Where would you
hide a bone?
Jean Béraud French 1849–1935 A party (Une
Soirée) 1878 (detail). Oil on canvas, 65.5 x 116.0
cm. Collection Musée d’Orsay, Paris. © Photo RMN
– Hervé Lewandowski
Who do you think the main person in the painting is?
How many ballet dancers are there?
How many violin bows can you count?
This must be a painting full of sounds.
Imagine all the sounds you would hear.
Would you hide
a bone here?
Edgar Degas French 1834–1917 The
orchestra of the Opéra (L’Orchestre de
l’Opéra) 1870. Oil on canvas, 56.5 x 46.0 cm.
Collection Musée d’Orsay, Paris. © Photo RMN
– Hervé Lewandowski
Look how the artist has put the baby in the cradle,
with the veil protecting her head.
Do you have a special place to sleep?
These artists wanted to paint people in everyday
situations.
Can you see other paintings where the people are
going about their everyday activities?
At home...
Draw a picture of someone going about their ordinary
everyday activities.
Do not bark!
Baby is sleeping.
Berthe Morisot French 1841–95 The
cradle (Le Berceau) 1872. Oil on canvas,
56.0 x 46.0 cm. Collection Musée d’Orsay,
Paris. © Photo RMN – Hervé Lewandowski
Look around. Colours are placed next to each other
with short brush strokes. The sky and the water are
never just blue and the trees and grass are never just
green!
Can you find another painting of the same place,
painted by a different artist?
Use the VIEW FINDER to help you see
the painting details.
Join the weather watchers, can you see a day that is
stormy/sunny/cloudy/windy?
Claude Monet French 1840–1926 Port-
Goulphar, Belle-Île 1887. Oil on canvas,
81.0 x 65.0 cm. Art Gallery of New South
Wales. Purchased 1949. Photograph:
Brenton McGeachie for AGNSW
It’s fantastique
standing up so high!
Find the painting to match the clues:
It was painted on a grey day
The artist was sitting up high, looking down
The street is full of horses and people
(hope they don’t collide!)
The street disappears into the distance
Use the view finder and discover the magic in
these works.
Camille Pissarro Danish/French 1830–
1903 Boulevard Montmartre, morning,
cloudy weather (Boulevard Montmartre,
matin, temps gris) 1897 (detail). Oil on
canvas, 73.0 x 92.0 cm. National Gallery of
