Oxford Stereoviews & Photographs
Exhibition 27.07.2012 – 12.08.2012

Following our two previous Oxford in Photo exhibitions, this summer we present a
further collection of Oxford photographs of interesting and unusual views of the city
and colleges, alongside a large selection of stereoviews of Oxford. Amassed over the
past year our collection of over 100 stereoviews includes examples from as early as
the 1850s running into the 20 th century, including albumen and silver gelatin prints.
Inherently magical, stereoviews are important records of places, events and of early
photography prior to the moving image.
By the middle of the 1860’s there were seventeen photographers working in Oxford
providing portraits, views, University sporting scenes and albums. One could buy
individual photos, albums made to order, get one’s portrait done and commission
group portraits. Photos could be purchased loose or mounted on card in a variety of
sizes. With an existing market of well to do gentleman with money to spend and an
ever-increasing tourist trade, Oxford was one of the most lucrative places to be a
photographer. Consequently the famous University city was one of the most
photographed cities in England if not the world during the Victorian period.
Photography in the nineteenth century became a profitable profession for many;
photographs held mass appeal, especially when technology increased their
accessibility. Magic lantern shows and itinerate photographers travelled the country,
as did the “new tourists” eager for souvenirs. Henry Taunt noted that when working
for Edward Bracher, Oxford’s first commercial photographer, that “ many a night I
have had to sit up a mount them [stereoscopic views] to supply the demand…”.
Stereoviews (also known as stereoscopic views or stereocards) recreate the illusion of
depth by taking advantage of the binocularirty of human vision. As our eyes are set
apart each one sends a slightly different image of the world to the brain. The brain
then combines these images into one, a phenomenon that enables us to “see” ever so
slightly, around the sides of objects, providing spatial depth and dimension.
Stereoscopic views consist of two nearly twin photographs - one for the left eye, one
for the right. When they are viewed through a special lens arrangement (a
stereoscope) the brain combines the two flat images and we “see” the illusion of
three-dimensional objects.
The production of binocular images preceded photography and examples of this can
be seen as early as the late 16 th century. Giovanni Battista della Porta (1538-1615)
created binocular drawings, whilst at about the same period Jacopo Chimenti da
Empoli (1554-1640) produced sketches side by side, which clearly indicated his
understanding of binocular vision. The first stereoscopic viewer (stereoscope) was
patented in 1838 by Sir Charles Wheatstone. His device used mirrors to create and
project a 3-dimensional image to the person looking into the device. It was rather
bulky and ungainly, however, and could only be used to view drawings. In 1844, the
art of taking stereoscopic photographs was first demonstrated in Germany, and David
Brewster, in Scotland, created the first of the modern stereoscopic viewers. The most
common process for making stereoscopic cards was through albumen photograph
processing, daguerreotype images being very rare.
The advent of photography catapulted stereoviews into the mainstream and after
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert praised those on view at the 1851 Great Exhibition
they exploded into popularity. This signalled the beginning of a huge trade in
stereoscopes and stereocards. Much like the VCR at the end of the 20 th century at the
end of the 19 th century it was the stereoscope that was the must-have item, with over a
million homes estimated to have owned a stereoviewer by the mid eighteen-fifties.

Although stereoviews were produced of a wide range of subjects they really
flourished within the tourism industry and it was the views of famous buildings,
towns and street scenes that were by far the most popular. The views began to be
printed with information about the image on the back and included in guidebooks of
various cities.
Early stereoviews and most Victorian photographs were not signed or marked by their
makers. As a result in many cases we have had to attribute makers based on the names
pasted in albums and circa dates, as photos would have been reprinted over a number
of years. We have used the types of paper and changes to buildings shown in the
photos to assist us in the dating process.
This collection is a good reflection of a range of photographers, manufacturers and
subject matter. Although frequently depicting typical views of the tourist attractions
of the city, some of the stereoviews and photographs in this collection focus on more
unusual scenes and subject matter, providing a thorough and detailed record of
Oxford during the Victorian era.

The Carfax Conduit was a water
conduit that supplied the city of
Oxford with water from 1617 until the
19th century. The conduit ran in an
underground lead pipe from a spring
on the hillside above the village of
North Hinksey, beneath Seacourt
Stream and the River Thames, to a
building at Carfax in the centre of
Oxford. The system was built by Otto
Nicholson, a London lawyer, to supply
the citizens of Oxford with clean
water. It replaced a system built by
Osney Abbey between 1205 and 1221
that had fallen into disrepair. In 1786
it was removed because of traffic
congestion and offered to Lord
Harcourt as feature for his park.
A superb original and one of a kind
Chromotype photograph of Oxford
High Street.
The process for the permanent
photograph on glass was patented by
William Robert Ake in April 1871.
The photograph would have been taken
in the usual way by photosensitizing a
glass plate with a bromide colloidon.
The plate was then put into a silver
bath and exposed to light. The plate
would then be put into a bath of
pyrogallic acid or proto-sulphate, fixed
by cyanide of potassium or
hyposulphate of soda, wash and dried.
To stain the picture permanently on
glass the print was then placed in an
airtight kiln until every part of the
photo became dark brown. It was then
cooled and washed. From Patents for
No. 126 High Street dates from the
fifteenth century, and has a late
seventeenth-century façade. It is the
only remaining example of this type of
architecture in Oxford. The structure of
the fifteenth-century house can be seen
inside, and the cellar is probably

medieval. It is a Grade II listed
building (ref. 1485/343).
£75
The first owner of this house was a
bell-founder, and in 1350 it was owned
by St Frideswide Abbey. It was
refronted in the later seventeenth
century, probably by Robert Pauling, a
mercer who was Mayor in 1679.
In 1772 a survey of every house in the
city was taken in consequence of the
Mileways Act of 1771. No. 126 was
then in the occupation of a Mr Madge,
and its frontage measured 6 yards 2
feet 9inches.
Rotary Photographic Company
Rotary Photographic Company London was a branch of NPG Germany,10&11 Austinfriars
99, Berlin. Cards made by this company have been found dated as early as 1908 into the mid
1920s. A young East Prussian, Arthur Schwarz, founded NPG in 1894, renting a building in
Schöneberg near Berlin. He marketed photographs and supplies, including stereoscopes.
Within three years NPG had outgrown its rented quarters and Schwarz purchased a spacious
complex in Berlin-Steglitz. At its peak, the company was a pioneer in color photography, had
more than 1000 employees, and included subsidiary offices in London, Paris, Rome, and New
York. Due to the impact of the war, NPG closed the Steglitz plant in the winter of 1921-22,
and its name passed to a firm in Dresden.
Alexander Washington Wilson
The illegitimate son of George Washington Wilson, Alexander was born in 1842. His mother,
Isabella Johnstone, was a farmer’s daughter who refused to marry the boy’s father. Wilson
père took full responsibility for the boy throughout his upbringing and taught him everything
he knew about photography During the 1860’s, Alexander moved to Leamington Spa where,
with capital from his father, he established himself as a photographer and a bookseller. [Roger
Taylor, George Washington Wilson: Artist and Photographer, 1981].
Hills and Saunders
Hills and Saunders is one of the longest- established names in photography and is in operation
today. Robert Hills and his brother-in-law Henry Saunders were hairdressers and wig
makers in Oxford, but quickly realized the potential photography had as a new form of artistic
expression and commercial venture. They opened their first studio in Harrow-On-The- Hill in
1852. Over the years they opened studios in Oxford, Cambridge, Harrow, Eton, Sandhurst,
Aldershot and Rugby. Robert Hills formally established his first commercial photographic
premises in Oxford at 16 Cornmarket Street in 1856, Oxford, and was trading as Hills &
Saunders from at least 1861. They became one of the key photographers of Victorian society
and several of their images are on display in the National Portrait Gallery. Robert Hills and
John Henry Saunders were appointed as photographers to Edward Prince of Wales in 1863
while he was at Oxford University shortly followed by the opening of their Oxford
Photographic Gallery in Eton in around 1863. From then on their business flourished, and
they were in constant demand when the Court was in residence at Windsor, proudly receiving
their first Royal Warrant from HRH Queen Victoria in 1867.
Philip H. Delamotte
Philip H. Delamotte (1821 - 1889) Philip Delamotte was a calotype photographer, and one of
the first to use photography for documentary purposes. Delamotte was commissioned to
document Crystal Palace and in 1855 he published his two volume work entitled
"Photographic Views of the Progress of the Crystal Palace, Sydenham", containing 160
architectural photographs.

Joseph Cundall
Joseph Cundall was Delamotte's publisher, and it was at his house that one of the first
commercial photographic exhibitions took place, with some 350 photographs available for
sale. Together with Roger Fenton he founded the Calotype Club in London. He taught
drawing to members of the Royal Family, and later he was appointed Professor of Drawing at
King's College, London. Delamotte also wrote a book entitled "The practice of photography:
a manual for students" - a work which went into its third edition.
Spiers & Son
Spiers & Son were stationers, desk & dressing-case makers, and had general fancy warehouse
in 102 & 103 High Street from 1834-1890.
Realistic Travels
Realistic Travels was founded by H. D. Girdwood and produced high quality stereographs for
British audiences. They made set of stereoviews of 600, 500, 400 300, 200, and 100 views,
with sub sets of 25 and 32 images. The company was known to be in operation from 1908 to
1916, but cards were produced into the 1920s under the name Realistic Travels.
S. Thompson
Little is know about Thompson and only five views of England by Stephen Thompson are
recorded by Treadwell - they are exceptionally rare. Thompson worked with a team of
photographers that included William Russell Sedgfield and lead by photographer William
England, on a series of 350 stereoviews of the 1862 International Exhibition.
Thomas Shrimpton
Thomas Shrimpton was a book and print seller and publisher whose shop was at 23 & 24
Broad Street, Oxford.
Alfred R. Mowbray
Alfred R. Mowbray was a photographer and bookseller who operated from No. 2 Cornmarket
Street, Oxford c. 1859-1867. A R Mowbray and Co
Founded in Oxford in 1858 by Alfred R Mowbray (1824-75) as religious booksellers and
suppliers of ecclesiastical fittings and perquisites of all kinds (including glass), the firm’s
works and shop were there. A London branch, opened in 1873, was for many years in
Margaret Street. Their work continued almost unchanged well into the C20, as a catalogue of
their wares of 1926 shows and they supplied mainly churches of an Anglo-Catholic
persuasion. The ecclesiastical fittings business was taken over by J Wippell and Co in the
1970s, but the name survives as a separate entity for religious works within Hatchard's
bookshop in Piccadilly, like Mowbray’s now part of the Waterstones chain. In later years
they did not design the goods they sold, but commissioned others, though few can be credited
to a name. Among designers of glass they used A L Ward.
The London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company
The London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company began in 1854 as the London
Stereoscope Company (LSC),u nder the leadership of Managing Partner George Swan
Nottage from 1856 was known as the London Stereoscopic Company and was operating from
54 Cheapside, and from May 1859 as the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company. It
closed in 1922.
Underwood & Underwood
The Underwood & Underwood Company started in 1882 in Ottawa, Texas, when two
brothers, Elmer and Bert Underwood, started a business of house-to-house distribution of
stereoviews. Within a few years, they had a distribution network covering most of the United
States and later included subjects from around the world. In the early 1890s Bert Underwood,
who had never taken a photograph, took lessons in photography, which allowed him to
introduce a high standard of quality in the choice of subjects and in photography composition
and interest. By 1901, Underwood & Underwood was by far the largest publisher, with a
production of 25,000 stereoviews per day and 300,000 stereoviewers per year. The total
number of titles issued is estimated to be between 30,000 and 40,000. In 1902, they bought
the Strohmeyer and Wyman publishing company, which had been publishing views with

Underwood & Underwood copyright. In 1912, Underwood sold the rights to most of its
negatives to Keystone, and few titles were published after that date. In 1923, the remaining
stock were transferred to Keystone and Underwood ceased all stereoscopic activities.
Most Underwood views were published on tan mount, although later views used harder dark
gray mounts, which had been introduced by Keystone. This view was published by
Strohmeyer and Wyman with Underwood & Underwood copyright are included in this
section of the catalog. Aside from the publisher's name they are indistinguishable in style,
presentation and captions. Many views were published under both names. Most Underwood
views were not numbered.
In terms of subject coverage, Underwood is eclectic and strong in all areas. The focus is on
quality and interest of the photography, with no particular area of specialization. The whole
range of civilian and military topics is covered in all their details, from city views, rivers and
harbors, rural scenes and people to American soldiers, shooting and battle scenes, prisoners,
dead soldiers and hospitals. As is typical of the time, many captions are condescending and
sometimes outrageously arrogant or racist. Captions of military views are nationalistic and
praise the valor of American soldiers, and tend to belittle the Insurrectos.
PHOTOGRAPHS:
George P. Day
George P. Day operated from 1872-1876 in 95 High Street (presumably breaking away from
Wheeler & Day). Wheeler & Day operated from 1866-1871 at 106 High Street after they
bought Edward Bracher’s business . In 1872, they appear to have split into two separate
businesses, with Wheeler remaining at 106 and Day moving into 95 High Street
George Washington Wilson
George Washington Wilson (7 February 1823 - 9 March 1893) was a pioneering Scottish
photographer. Pioneering the development of techniques for photography outside of the
studio and the mass production of photographic prints, he moved increasingly from
portraiture to landscape photography in the 1860s. He also produced stereoscopic pictures
whose main characteristic was that exposures were very short. By 1864 he claimed to have
sold over half a million prints. At the time of his death in 1893 (he had handed over the
business to his sons, Charles, Louis and John Hay Wilson in 1888) the firm employed 40 staff
and was one of the largest publishers of photographic prints in the world, competing with
James Valentine, who was also a prolific photographer, with a large company in Dundee. The
business survived until 1908, when it was wound up at auction.
George Walker
George Walker, stationer, bookseller and friend of Wilson tells us that in 1855 'stereoscopic
views began to appear at this time, and Wilson experimented. Early views by Wilson,
although his technique was not perfected, found a ready market at 2/- (15 cents) each. This
was the period when the railways were opening up what until then had been far-flung areas to
tourism, and one of the first regions to feel the benefit of a vast influx of tourists (all wanting
photograpic souveniers) was the Trossachs and Loch Katrine immortalized by Sir Walter
Scott in his epic work 'The Lady of the Lake'.
Gillman & Co
Gillman & Co, eventually to become Gillman and Soame, were another major photographic
company that is still operating today. Charles Gillman first had his shop in 1882 at 107 St.
Aldate's. The first mention of Gillman and Co. is in 1880. In 1891, Gillman & Co received
royal recognition with their appointment to HRH The Prince of Wales. In 1931, they
incorporated George Leslie's photographic studios and were based at 16 Cornmarket Street.
In 1932, they incorporated Hills and Saunders and by 1938 they were based in 56 High Street
and 30 Cornmarket. The company specialised in group portraits and sporting scenes.
W.A. Mansell & Co. were photographers and fine art publishers in London on Oxford Street.

Henry Taunt
Henry Taunt was born William Henry Taunt in St Ebbe's, Oxford, in 1842, the son of a
plumber and a domestic servant, he reversed the order of his forenames in adult life and
became Henry William. His schooling was brief and he worked for several years before
joining the Oxford photographer, Edward Bracher, in 1856. He set up his own photographic
business Taunt & Co in 1868 and ran it until his death at the age of 80 in 1922. His firm took
more than 60,000 photographs during that time, creating an unrivalled record of Victorian and
Edwardian Oxford and Oxfordshire and the River Thames from source to sea.
Henry Taunt's black and white photographs consist primarily of views of Oxford, (together
with surrounding counties) and the River Thames. The producer of the first ever guide book
of the Thames to be illustrated with photographs Taunt played a vital part in establisihing the
river as an area for recreation after the Thames above London lost most of its freight traffic to
the increasing rail network. Jerome K. Jerome's novel, 'Three Men in a Boat', reflects this
change from haulage to leisure which Taunt help establish through his photographs, books
and illustrated lectures.
Photographing the river, or indeed anywhere, in the 1860's was an extremely complex task.
The wet collodion process, invented by Frederick Scott Archer, was the best means to capture
negative images on glass until the end of the 1870s and required the plates to be prepared,
exposed and processed while the emulsion was still damp. The process required Taunt to row
his skiff to a location, set up his dark tent, set up his camera and tripod, sensitise and coat the
glass plate, immediately make the two or three second exposures, develop and fix the images,
wash them in river water, dry them and then row back to his lodgings or set up camp with his
assistants. Henry Taunt was at the cutting edge of Victorian location photographic
technology.
In Henry Taunt's life-time the population of Oxford grew from around 24,000 to 57,000. It
was a period of momentus change of which Taunt was there to document. Brought up in St.
Ebbe's, he had a real interest in recording the less picturesque corners of Oxford; as a
commercial photographer proud of his city, he also responded to the growing demand for
photographs and later postcard views of Oxford's architectural treasures.
A prolific local historian, he published over 50 books on Oxford and its surrounding area.
Interestingly Taunt was well aware of the value of his work as a historical record: "All
photographs have some limited historical value; those taken today will many of them be much
wanted in fifty years time" (1918, quoted in S Read, Berkshire in Camera). In 1893 he was
elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, possibly in belated recognition of his New
Map of the Thames first published 20 years earlier.
Taunt dedicated his life to photography, but his numerous publications demonstrate his varied
interests. He was typical self made Victorian, rising from humble begginings to become a true
entrepreneur. A brilliant self-publicist and showman, he gave his occupation in the 1891
census, while resident in Broad Street as 'Artist in water colours, photographer, author,
designer, lecturer, lantern-slide maker, picture-frame maker, gold-blocker and printer,
publisher, mount cutter, ornmamental card maker, entertainer, gilder'
Glossary of Terms
Albumen paper, called so because it was prepared with egg whites, became the most popular
printing material after its invention in 1850 by Louis-Desire Blanquart-Evrard and it remained
in general use until about 1895. The paper was coated in egg white that was dissolved in
potassium bromide and acetic acid. When dry the paper was floated in a solution of silver
nitrate and then dried. It could be bought partly prepared, i.e. coated with a thin film of white
of egg and was then sensitized with silver nitrate solution by the photographer. Manufacturers
sold readied coated paper. The number of eggs being used by albumen paper manufactures
was enormous; girls in factories did nothing all day but separate the whites from the yolks. It
was stated that the Dresden Albumizing Company, the largest in the world, used 60,000 eggs
a day (Newhall 196).

Prints on albumen paper were made by contact printing negatives. After the paper had been
exposed and developed it was toned a rich gold brown in gold chloride and then fixed in
hypochloride. Toning with chloride of gold checked fading and produced a sepia effect,
avoiding the unattractive reddening to which the paper was prone. The popularity of this
paper is demonstrated in the work in this catalogue as the majority of the prints in this show
are albumen prints. (Phaidon.1997)
Gelatin silver print, The standard contemporary monochrome print. The paper, first
introduced in 1882, is treated with the same process as the gelatin dry-plate process.
Following the introduction of the gelatin silver print in 1882, the demand for albumen prints
slowed down and by 1895 they had been replaced by this faster and more flexible method of
printing.
