President’s Welcome
Phoenix College has provided
outstanding teaching and learning
experiences for over 89 years,
resulting in our students’ success in
the classroom, on the field, and far
beyond. A rich history and a cuttingedge
learning environment coexist
here, providing our students with a
unique campus experience that is
second to none.
Intercollegiate athletics programs have long been a vital
part of PC’s mission. Phoenix College student athletes
participate in the Student Athlete Scholastic Success
Program, receiving mentorship and advisement from
coaches, administration, and faculty as they strive to reach
their academic goals. The program has resulted in stellar
outcomes:
• Thirteen Phoenix College student athletes earned National
Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Academic
All-American honors in 2008-2009.
• Nine of the 13 PC athletic teams were designated
Academic All-American Teams, with a team grade point
average of at least 3.0.
• Our Women’s Track team was named NJCAA 2008-
2009 Academic Team of the Year with a team grade point
average of 3.58.
• The PC Women’s Basketball team was named to the
Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Honor Roll for
holding the highest G.P.A. nationally.
• During 2008-2009, 62 Phoenix College student athletes
signed on to continue their athletic and academic pursuits
at the university level.
Generations of outstanding students begin the pursuit
of their educational, professional, and personal goals
at Phoenix College. PC’s uniquely talented faculty,
administrators, and staff share a commitment to the
highest academic standards and are dedicated to
encouraging each of our students to go far, close to home.
Thank you for supporting our student athletes. I hope you
thoroughly enjoy yourself at this event, and I look forward
to your continued engagement in the variety of educational,
athletic, cultural, and civic opportunities available right here
in your community, at Phoenix College.
2009 Coaching Staff
Chistopher Sagar
Head Coach
Chris Sagar enters his third
year as the head coach at
Phoenix College.
Sagar took over the program
in 2007 after spending
five years as the assistant/
goalkeeper coach for the Bears. In his two years at
the helm he has amassed a 20-12-4 record, finished
both years in the top four of the ACCAC, and made
consecutive semi-final appearances in the NJCAA
Region 1 Tournament.
In 2008, the team finished with a 13-6-1 record. In
doing so they broke the school records for most wins
in a season, most consecutive wins in a season (a
stretch of 8), and most goals scored in a season (49).
They also scored in 20 of their 21 matches.
Sagar also currently serves as a fulltime Staff Coach
and Director of Goalkeeping at the Blackhawks
Scottsdale Soccer Club. There he is responsible for the
technical and tactical development of competitive
youth teams as well as the implementation of a
program of education and instruction for all of the
club’s goalkeepers.
Prior to this he was at Mesa Soccer Club, the former
Director of Goalkeeping for the State of Arizona
Olympic Development Program and also spent some
time as the Head Coach of the Fort Collins Force, an
amateur team competing in the W-League. There
he led a team comprised of both current and former
players from some of the nation’s top collegiate
soccer programs.
Sagar also served as an Assistant Women’s Soccer
Coach at Arizona State University in 2000. There he
helped the young program to its most successful
season to date (14-7-1) and to round two of the
Division I NCAA Playoffs. Additionally, he led the
varsity boy’s Prescott High School team to Desert
Sky titles in 1997-98 and 1998-99 and the state semi
finals each year amassing a 33-6 record. Sagar was
named the Region’s Coach of the Year for the 1998-99
season.
A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Sagar represented
his country at the U-19 and U-23 (Olympic)
levels playing in the Junior World Cup qualifying
tournament in Guatemala 1988 and in CONCACAF
qualifying rounds for the 1992 Olympic Games in
Barcelona.
Sagar won a National Championship with Yavapai
College in 1992 and earned the distinction of being
named Most Valuable Goalkeeper at the National
Tournament in both 1991 and 1992. In 1999, he
received Honorable Mention on the NJCAA All
Century Team. He finished his college career at
the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. There as
captain, he led his team to its first ever NCAA post
season appearance. He currently holds the NCAA II
National Record for Lowest Goals Against in a career
(0.32goals/game). He received the Arthur Ashe Jr.
Award for excellence in Academics and Sport and
was inducted to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside
Athletic Hall Of Fame in 2001.
Angela Gomez
Assistant Coach
Angela Gomez enters her first
season as Assistant Coach for
the Bears Women’s Soccer
Team. However Angela is no
stranger to Phoenix College.
She is a native of Glendale,
AZ and graduated from
Moon Valley High School in
2004. She is a PC Alumnus who played soccer here
from 2004-2006 and ran Cross-Country for PC in
2005. She was a 2006 Academic All-American at PC
and a 2006 ACCAC All Star.
Angela graduated from PC in 2006 and continued
playing soccer at Kansas Wesleyan University in
Salina, KS. In 2006 and 2007 her team at KWU
was Soccer Conference Champions and Region
Champions in 2007. The 2007 team made history at
KWU by being the first women’s soccer team to ever
make it to the NAIA National Tournament.
In KWU’s 2008 season, Angela was a Student
Assistant Coach for the Women’s Soccer Team. There
she helped the team to another appearance in the
national tournament. In the same year, Angela was
