organization with membership open to
all teacher of English in the first two

recruit others to join NCTE and CCCC under the
auspices of the new TYCA structure. The twentythousand
voices of two-year college English
professionals must never be lost in the polyphonic
discourse of professional organizations or English
studies. Together we can create visions for the future,
visions which we can bring to fruition.
Let us begin with the Two-Year College English
Association.”

Lynn Troyka (“TYCA to You,” 1996): “The Two-Year
College English Association (TYCA) of NCTE began its
life officially around midnight on Monday, November
25, as the NCTE Annual Convention was ending in
Chicago. For the first time, we who teach English at
two-year colleges in the United States and Canada—
along with everyone who cares deeply about the
unique mission of two-year colleges—have our own
national professional organization to give voice to
our national and international concerns about our
present and future roles in higher education.”

TYCA Gala Poem: Fire and Ice
This variation on Frost’s “Fire and Ice,” written by Mike Matthews, was
read in front of the TYCA ice sculpture at the Inaugural gala.
Some say TYCA was born in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of 4Cs
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if TYCA could be born twice,
I think I know enough of NCTE
To say that for beginnings* ice
Is also great
And will suffice.
