Celebrating 30 Years

2012: Celebrating 30 years of successes
The year 2012 was a time of great reflection
at the Greater Yellowstone Coalition.
As we looked back on 30 years of serving as
America’s Voice For A Greater Yellowstone and
looked to the next three decades, we realized
just how far we’ve come — thanks to your
loyal support — since that first meeting in
a small room at the Teton Science Schools
outside of Jackson, Wyo., in 1983.
At that time, the term “ecosystem” had yet
to be uttered in any official capacity and the
federal government had visions of drilling for
oil and gas in Greater Yellowstone wilderness
areas. Today, “Greater Yellowstone
Ecosystem” is as much a part of the region’s
imprint as geysers and grizzly bears. And
wilderness not only emerged unscathed, in
2012 we were making earnest strides to add
more in Greater Yellowstone.
Speaking of grizzly bears, in 1983 they
were on the brink of extinction in Greater
Yellowstone, with an estimated population
of fewer than 200. Today, because your
voices were heard, more than 600 roam the
ecosystem and our conversations in 2012
revolved around helping communities coexist
with this symbol of Yellowstone’s wildness.
the Northern Rockies, and Greater Yellowstone
is one of the last great largely intact temperate
ecosystems on Earth. Wyoming, Montana and
Idaho now manage the wolf, which continues to
prove its resilience and permanence.
And 2012 saw a light at the end of another
long GYC tunnel: resolution of the winter-use
issue in Yellowstone. Officials introduced a plan
calling for a modest number of cleaner, quieter
snowmobiles in the park — a dramatically
improved picture from the days when an
unlimited number of noisy, foul-smelling
machines careened across the landscape.
Cycle Greater Yellowstone, set to debut in
August, went public in June 2012. The event
was created to heighten awareness of GYC,
build rapport with key communities in and
out of the region, and raise substantial funds
to support our work. Reaction has been
overwhelmingly positive, and we believe CGY
will become a signature event while providing a
very public stage for GYC’s work.
What sets us apart at GYC is that we truly
are America’s Voice For A Greater Yellowstone
— the only advocacy group dedicated solely to
protecting the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

These aren’t the only examples of how your
voices have helped us serve as guardians for
the region’s lands, waters, and wildlife .
Where once wild, genetically pure
Yellowstone bison were confined to the park
and routinely slaughtered when they crossed
the invisible boundary, in 2012 the State of
Montana opened 75,000 acres north of the
park to free-roaming bison. The state has
identified four other landscapes for bison in
Greater Yellowstone, and it is a matter of time
before this genetic treasure is used to establish
wild conservation herds across the West.

distant memory. Now more than 1,700 roam

reflected 2012’s place as a watershed year
for GYC: The announcement of a transition
in leadership and creation of Cycle Greater
Yellowstone, a week-long bicycle tour
expected to bring 1,000 cyclists to the region.
Executive Director Mike Clark, an iconic
conservation figure in the region, announced
he is stepping down after two tours as the
nationally respected face of GYC. He is to be
succeeded by Caroline Byrd, who takes the
reins at GYC after successful tenures in Greater
Yellowstone with The Nature Conservancy and
Wyoming Outdoor Council.
Our work in 2012 led to significant progress on
a number of fronts:
Yellowstone Bison: 2012 saw Montana
wildlife and livestock agencies agree to
a significant shift in their management
paradigm. For the first time in a century,
bison are tolerated and accommodated in the
Gardiner Basin, north of Yellowstone. When
the livestock industry attacked this landmark
decision with multiple lawsuits, we intervened
and our efforts were instrumental in securing
a favorable court decision that upheld the
state’s changed management.

A final Word from our Executive Director
Thirty years ago the term Greater Yellowstone
did not exist except in the minds of a few people
who were concerned about wildlife issues around
Yellowstone Park. Grizzly bears were considered
likely to go extinct within 100 years. Wolves were a
distant memory of people who had grown up in the
1920s. Much of the federal land was chopped up by
the checkerboard ownership patterns of public and
private lands that dated back to the coming of the
railroads. Mining, logging and ranching dominated
discussions about a regional economy. And the
Sagebrush Rebellion was in full storm, with the
old love-hate relationship that Westerners have
with the federal government in full display across
Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.
We celebrate our 30th anniversary this year
with the knowledge that the Greater Yellowstone
region is one of perhaps a dozen fully intact large
landscape ecosystems left on the face of the Earth.
And we are determined to keep it intact for future
generations to experience and enjoy.
Today grizzlies are thriving, having rebounded
to three times the number that existed when GYC
was born. Wolves are now a permanent part of the
natural, cultural and political landscape. And most
residents of this region now understand that people
live and visit this region because of the attraction
and value of public lands. The experience of living
in, visiting, and enjoying the magnet of wild lands
is now the dominant engine that drives Greater
Yellowstone’s vibrant economy.
Times have changed. This Annual Report
describes our work across the Greater Yellowstone
Region and talks about current and emerging issues
in a period in which concerns about climate change
and the shrinking role of the federal government
now seem to dominate much of the public
discourse about the future of this region.
One key lesson of our work over thirty years
is that the issues we grapple with – wildlife
management, human population growth, industrial
threats to a vast wild region, fragmentation of private
lands that provide winter habitat for large mammals,
and energy development – cannot be solved quickly.
In fact, some defy solution and must be managed
and monitored permanently as our society continues
to put new pressures
on this wild kingdom
that we call Greater
Yellowstone, a region
ten times larger than
Yellowstone Park
and a refugia for both
wildlife and people in a time of societal change.

as GYC’s executive director, I stepped down in May.

Grizzly Bears: We have a strong program
for reducing conflicts between grizzly bears
and humans, which are a significant threat
to long-term sustainability of bears in
Greater Yellowstone. There were 54 known
grizzly bear mortalities in 2012 in Greater
Yellowstone, two-thirds caused by humans.
We are partnering with agencies to reduce
conflicts in three key locations around the
ecosystem: Island Park, Idaho, and Wyoming’s
Bridger-Teton and Shoshone national forests.
Wolves: We organized public support aimed
at prohibiting or limiting wolf hunting along
national park boundaries. We were initially
successful in securing a ban on hunting and
trapping in Montana adjacent to Yellowstone,
although wolf opponents were able to
overturn that decision on a legal technicality.
We will continue engaging with state agencies
to obtain no-hunting buffers.
Wolverines: A long-running effort by
GYC came to fruition when the U.S. Fish
& Wildlife Service proposed protection for
wolverines under the Endangered Species
Act. We joined litigation in 2008 to force
consideration of the impact of climate
change, and shrinking snowpacks, on the
long-term viability of wolverines.
Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout:
We have joined the National Park Service
and the U.S. Geological Survey to reduce lake
trout and restore Yellowstone cutthroats. In
2012, we supported research efforts that led
to the removal of approximately 300,000 lake
trout – bringing the number in three years
to 800,000. Cutthroat numbers already are
rebounding — good news for grizzly bears
and other wildlife that depend on native trout.
Climate ChanGE: In 2012, we launched
a collaborative effort in Montana called the
Madison Valley Climate Adaptation Project
to identify 15 streams where we can restore
watershed function and increase resilience to
climate change. We convened a group of local
stakeholders and experts to discuss shared
watershed values, climate change projections
and key areas that have been degraded. That
discussion resulted in projects on three creeks
that will increase stream flows, improve
habitat, lower stream temperatures, and
increase aquatic and terrestrial connectivity.
Phosphate Mining: We initiated some
outstanding national publicity, including a
full segment of “The Daily Show with Jon
Stewart”, on the effect of phosphate mining
on the waters and fish of Greater Yellowstone.
While the J.R.Simplot Co. sought to
bury that information in appendices to an
application for a “site-specific exemption”
to selenium pollution standards, we gave it
national publicity that, combined with our
lawsuit, sent a message that we are serious
about defending water quality.
Absaroka-Beartooth Front: We
are midway through two substantial federal
land-use management plans that will guide
development decisions for 20 years. We were
heartened by recommendations issued by the
Bureau of Land Management and Shoshone
National Forest. In both cases, our advocacy
efforts led directly to supportive comments
from Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead that
encouraged the BLM and Forest Service to
adopt stronger restrictions against oil and gas
development over much of the Front.

On Sept. 30, 2012, GYC had:
• Total assets of $8 million, liabilities of $1.2 million, and net assets of $6.8 million.
• $2.2 million was in unrestricted or temporarily restricted cash and short term investments,
• $0.8 million was receivable,
• $3 million was in fixed assets (building, land, equipment), and
• $2 million was in permanently restricted endowment funds.
Revenues 1 for the year were $2,948,141 and expenses were $2,540,955.
Revenue sources were:
• Individual supporters: $ 1,281,126 (43%)
• Foundation grants: $ 1,503,835 (51%)
• Other: $ 163,180 (6%)
Expenses were for:
• Conservation programs: $ 1,953,541 (77%)
• Administration: $ 260,470 (10%)
• Fundraising: $ 326,944 (13%)
