Born in Penang 1944. Tan Peng Hooi is a self-taught veteran artist since 1966.
He has participated in various group and solo exhibitions. One of his most
notable achievements was the time he was honoured by the Reader’s Digest
with a featured article, ‘The Painter who Preserves Malaysia’s past’. Peng Hooi is a
versatile artist that could paint almost any subjects ranging from nudes, landscapes,
fishing village to animals; but he is particular noted for his paintings of birds. Pigeon
is one of his favorites. Though a common subject, he never finds them as an
exhaustible one. He always captures them from different views and angles, each
time with different visual excitement. When painting, he looks at them with a fresh
eyes giving them new personality, altering their tone, shape and brighten their glow
in their eyes. Peng Hooi also focuses on how the light interacts and affects the
pigeons; for example they could appear to be more soft, light and luminous under
the sunlight. Apart from this, the artists also pays adequate attention in details in
constructing the atmospheric, darker background to bring out the brightness and
voluminous of the pigeons.
Born in 1904, Penang. Abdullah Ariff was an art teacher at the Anglo-Chinese
School, Penang which is now known as the Methodist Boys School. Ariff is a
renowned watercolourist. The central of this painting carries the key essence
of a village life of which Ariff could share with. His observant eye for animal
life and technical excellence fully reflected on this painting. Without much
play of colours and a great discount of attention of background, the most
authentic representation of life is represented through clean and quick short
brushstrokes.
Born in Kutoarjo, Central Java, 1919. He studied at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy
(ASRI), Yogyakarta and Ceramics and Landscape, Nagoya, Japan (1960). After some
military training, he had his apprentice study at the Indonesia Art Academy Yogyakarta
under painters Hendra Gunawan, Sudarso, Trubus, and Kusnadi. Then Widayat met
a Bandung painter, Kartono Yudhokusumo from whom he got direct influence of
decorative style in painting. He received BKPM award (1953), a cultural award from the
Indonesian Government (1972), the Best Biennial Painting, Yogyakarta (1986) and the
ASEAN Award, Brunei Darussalam (1993). His works have been shown throughout
Indonesia and abroad. He performed his solo exhibitions in Yogyakarta (1983), Jakarta
(1985, 1990, 1991, 1992, 2000 and participated in joint exhibition in Japan, Netherlands
and United States for KIAS (1990 – 1991). Widayat paints freely, unburdened by anything.
His attempts in infusing contents by adding symbols and indications give significance to
his imaginary space. Reading Widayat’s works, we are seemingly taken to the archaic
natures and to the daily life, without perspective, limitation of space and time. We may
remark them as beautiful and alluring, crowding our retinas, innocently accepting reality,
fascinatingly interpretable, and mystically thrilling the space.
Ch’ng Kiah Kiean was born in 1974, in Penang. He is
a trained architect, artist, designer and also the blog
correspondent of Urban Sketches. His passion for
old heritage structures and also his background in
streetscapes. However, different from the normal
architectural sketches, his works are jazzier, more
spontaneous. His deep-rooted understand of
structures enable him to interpret his city differently.
This piece of Ch’ng shows the Jelutong Tai Tay Yah
Temple, a Taoist temple that is located at one corner
of Taman Jelutong. He played with line, shades and
shadows to sketch out the charm of this historic
building. Extra attention was placed in depicting
Born in1956, Kuala Penyu (Sabah). Awang Damit is one of the renowned abstract expressionists in Malaysia.
After graduating from UiTM in Fine Arts in 1983, he crafted his way into the Catholic University
of America to Washington D.C., to obtain Masters in Fine Arts (1989). Awang Damit now lectures in
UITM. He has held positions as the Curator of the Art Gallery and Head of the Fine Arts Department
before being appointed an Associate Professor in 2000.
While lecturing in UiTM, he completed the lauded series Marista (2002) and Iraga (2011). He also
has started on his fourth series – Paya Ramahe – with a touch of modernity. His different styles of
painting are what make people more attracted to his artwork. Awang Damit belongs to the second
generation abstract expressionists in modern Malaysian art. This group widened the scope of their
artistic expression turning landscapes and nature into a new set of visual language. In his paintings,
everything is reduced to its essential elements, nothing superfluous or unnecessary retained. Colours
are essential components. Immersed in a selection of earth colour, the master creates abstract spaces
with his signature broad and daring brushstrokes. Awang’s non-representational painting, geometrical
forms with diverse lines against subdivided background, is often unique and optimistic in spirit. Awang
Damit has held various exhibitions both in groups as well as solo including the Bentuk and Makna by
Galeri Seni FSSR (UiTM, 2000) and Intipati Budaya – Satu Sintesis show at the National Art Gallery
(Kuala Lumpur, 1995). Awang Damit has also actively involved himself in shows abroad including in
China, Taiwan, Japan and London.
Adoration, 1968
Signed and dated Bottom Left: Sui Hoe ‘68,
MYR 28,000 - 36,000
USD 8,400 - 10,800
Sui Hoe is among the NAFA artists who have created a distinctive individual style. Each of Sui Hoe’s work
is created in a fantasy, imaginary dream-like scene. His people are always painted with simplified shapes:
almond-eyed, owl-like face, round lips and geometrical limbs. Every subject matter is translated in the
most simplified and calm manner yet deep in thought.
Adoration is one of the signature paintings of Sui Hoe’s early creation. Here, Sui Hoe deftly challenges
the logical narrative form and representation. A couple is painted under the moonlight. The female stands
adoring a pot of flowers and the male lays tranquilly with closed eyes. The blue-red streak table creates
profound visual excitement. Behind them is a big pasture of grassland shining under a full moon night.
Everything is at its minimum dimensions – adoration the sublime of stillness and the serenity of quiet
landscapes.
Born in 1939 in Kedah, Khoo Sui Hoe attended the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore in 1959
and has chosen to further his studies at the Pratt Graphic Centre in New York. In 1974, he was awarded
a scholarship grant from the John D. Rockefeller 3rd Fund to study the development of contemporary
art. He also won the first prize in the Oil, Malaysia Art and Craft competition in 1965, twice winning the
Asian Arts Now Awards given by the Las Vegas Museum (USA) 2002 and 2004 respectively. He had his
Irsam was born in Ketandan, Klaten Central Java in June 24th, 1942.
Since childhood he had dreamed to be a painter because he did not
want to be like his father as a farming labour. He took his study at
the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI) Yogyakarta (1959 - 1965)
and become a lecturer at then (1965 – 1967). His great fondness in
Wayang has given a large contribution in his artworks. His works show
a specific style: rich colors, patterns of dots and lines and textures.
He rarely left an empty space in his paintings. Three major themes
of Irsam’s paintings include: 1) Daily activities, 2) Mythology and 3)
Mask. The present lot is one of his daily activities themes. This theme
is expressed in painting with a simple composition. They often depict
subjects of human’s activities without the restriction of time and space.
Here, he tried to show the intimacy of a mother and a child expressing
the beauty of human relationships. He had held his first exhibition in
1967 in Jakarta. He received an award from the Philippines, Singapore,
and Thailand. In 1980, he also joined in the Contemporary Asian Art
Born in 1906, Guangdong (China). Wen Hsi
was an artist, an academician and a gallerist.
He studied art at the Shanghai College of Art
in 1928. Wen Hsi settled down in Singapore
at 1948 and became an art teacher at The
Chinese High School and taught there from
1949 to 1968, concurrently teaching art at the
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) from
1951 to 1959. As a passionate art educator he
had greatly influenced many of Singapore’s early
Chinese artists. Wen Hsi was a great observant
of nature. Almost everything can be the master’s
inspiration to create exciting work namely,
landscapes, human figures and animals. Chicken,
gibbons, herons, carps and squirrels are some
of his favourite subjects. Wen Hsi’s constant
eagerness to strike for something new led him
to learn finger painting – a technique that dates
from the Tang Dynasty. This drawing style has
enabled him to produce unpredictable broken
“I like drawing children, colourful games, and abstract paintings from my surroundings. Beauty is not the key but to bring
aesthetic value to common things that other don’t see is. Things that happen everyday, especially children, their joy and
Dzulkifli Buyong is an avant garde artist of all time. His love of everyday object is justified through his subject matters. Buyong
has turned a monotonous everyday object into an exciting visual subject.
This Kucing dan bunga is among the most interesting works of Dzulkifli Buyong. The composition of this painting is
uncomplicated but the message is rather sophisticated. This painting can be read in two different levels. Aesthetically, it has
a simple picture plane. The background is painted with a blue table is discerned lying against a whitish wall of which it is
half covered by a sky bluish curtain. Foreground is occupied by a colour cat to the right and a pot of flowers to the left. A
flower, light purple, is dropped on the far left of the table and a pink petal to the right. Each of the flowers is of five petals
and is deliberately outlined in a distinctive colour. Without stalks, flowers are placed seemingly floating about the vase.
Buyong seems to pay special attention to one flower, that’s the one on top painted with dark purple. It is also the same
flower where the cat is starring at. Interestingly, the green-eyed cat possesses similar colours as the pot of flowers. It has
grey skin with orange, brown and white spots overlapping each other.
Pausing at this painting for a deeper thought, while Buyong is a passionate artist who exalts life in its full colour, it would
be rather unusual for the artist to repeat similar colours for both the pot of flowers and the cat. What was in his mind?
The exhibition Soal Identiti (Identity in question) of which the painting was once exhibited in 1990 may offer a closest
clue. Buyong was one of the artists who was invited by the National Art Gallery to visually examining the questions of
self-identity including life, tradition, culture or customs. The Kucing dan Bunga is one of the two that was submitted to
the exhibition. Having this as a pointer, Buyong’s attempt in asking the million dollar questions “who are we” is rather
appearance. The resemblance of colours between the cat and flower seems to suggest the cat is asking his own identity.
Is it a cat or a resemblance of nature or its surroundings? The artist seems to invite spectator to enter a realm in search of
one own personal identity and to engage in one’s own journey of self-discovery. The painting throws a simple yet important
question of life.
Born in 1948, Kuala Lumpur. Dzulkifli Buyong is one of the well-known artists. He received his art education at the Victoria
Institution from 1961 to 1965, studying under Patrick Ng Kah Oon. He was a regular member of the Wednesday Art
Group that formed in 1952 in Kuala Lumpur. It was an important local art cradle of that time. Among the contemporaries
includes Syed Ahmad Jamal and Peter Harris.
Dzulkifli Buyong had won many competitions since young age. At the age of 16, Buyong won numerous awards including a
gold medal from the Queen , Tengku Ismail Tengku Budriah and first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al –Haj.
At 19, he had been given chances to exhibits his work of art to public. During the times, he was considered as “Malaysian
Teen Sensation” for his extraordinary hardwork as he successfully produces various work art at such a young age. Many
Dzulkifli Buyong works are kept permanent collection in National Art Gallery and Gallery of National Bank.
“Growing up in small village in east coast, the birthplace of
my mother, I was surrounded by nature, farming activity,
paddy field and harmonic people which was greatly
influenced my art making. My home and my studio are
located on a land also used for goat farming. The farm
house studio with fresh green pasture, clean air, horses,
duckling, and the occasional visits by small reptiles is a
source of inspiration for my new art pieces. My works have
a more contemporary feel as I mix together elements of
nature with industrial media. Other elements utilized in my
works include natural and found object, while using both
classical and technologically advanced ways to producing
art like scrap metal welding and collage in my art piece.”
Born in 1977, Sarawak. Suhaidi Razi is known for his
outstanding talent in sculptures which is an area in fine art.
He holds a Fine Art degree from Universiti Teknologi Mara
various public and private galleries around Malaysia. His
involvements in painting were also incredible as he won
IBRAHIM HUSSEIN
(Kedah, 1936 - 2009)
Sport Series, 1986
8 Pieces of Litho Print describing
sport series, ed.1/200 : 61 x 46 cm
Signed and dated, Ibrahim Hussein , 1986
MYR 50,000 - 80,000
USD 15,000 – 24,000
Sport Series (1985) consists of a separate set of 8 sports: Handball, high jump, cycling, running, wresting, hurdles race, golfing, hockey, and. The careful
placing of each activity demonstrates Ib. Hussein’s simple yet intricate detailed play of composition. Each of the sports has a beautiful rhythmic layout.
Players are the dominant of Handball. An invisible triangular foreground dictates the busy motion of the sport. In High Jump, the stand is deliberately
placed in the middle to cut through the stillness of blue at the bottom. Movement of sportsmen is intensified by overlapping lines against the background.
Similar dynamic action can be seen in Cycling. Ib. Hussein pays no attention, at all, to the bicycle itself but the movement of the cyclist, harmonious yet
progressive. Similarly, in Wrestling, forces concentrates at the lower half of the painting. It creates a contrasting optical excitement. All the visual weigh
seems to put against the blue wrestler who has no chance to retaliate upon. In the Running print, Ib. uses lines to form the unity of runners.
Though figures of sportsmen are unidentified, Ib exquisitely used line to connect the disparate field. Among all, Hurdle Race demonstrates the most
dynamic movement of lines; diagonal lines suggest the background; overlapping lines form depth; distant lines give space; and, finally long and wavy
lines create an optical illusion of continuity past. An unusual technique of Ib. in Golfing is the use of contrasting colours, red against green, so overtly.
This approach is rather rare in Ib.’s works. A golfer is getting ready to hit. The artist multiplies the figures of the golfer to create an expressive gestural
movement. Among all prints, the sport of Hockey is the most colour one. The player with ochre jersey vigorously pushes against the blue players where
forces eventually converge. Ib. astutely placed repetitive short and repetitive lines on top of one another with diagonal lines lays across which forms an
innovative surge of lines technique. No other artist has had used line as par excellence as Ib.
Market Place is a batik work that of women-dominant. It is an early morning market
scene where villagers are out and about. At the foreground, three ladies seem
sealing an important marketing deal. Each of them seems contented with the selling
and purchasing. Behind the scene is a busy market; a mother is carrying an infant on
her left while considering the offer by a seller; in the middle, a woman is cycling away
from the market and to the left, a beca is spotting at the heavy-loaded ladies who
just bought a basket of food hoping them to hop on. These are the scenes must not
be unusual for Mat Hussin as had translated the market life to the fullest.
Born in 1938, Kelantan. Ismail Mat Hussin is Malaysia’s most senior living master in
batik painting today. He uses the batik technique to capture the aesthetic Malaysia
life in the east coast. Village scenes have been one of his favourite subjects and daily
Born in 1954, Alor Setar. H.H. Lim has been practicing art in Rome from 1976 and has remained there ever since to pursue his
artistic endeavour. His topic of interest includes language and communication - a central theme that tackle linguistics issues. He is
also known to employ elements of everyday-life in his works from the 1980s such as ‘religious objects and images, linguistic images,
cuisine recipes, objects of everyday use, arms of defense, political images’ to represent ‘the resistance of survival to everyday life’.
H.H. Lim is among the most high-profiled Malaysian international artists today, and is an item in major international art publications and art auctions. He
is an installation cum Neo-Conceptual artist, with a penchant for colossal works, often non-conventional, which occupy huge spaces. While his works are
conceptual in nature and transcendental in intention, wry words and content are central elements in his art, achieving poetic effect coupled with his elegant
choice of materials. At times, he is also a performance artist.
In year 2013, his works have been featured in the Cuban Pavilion of the Venice Biennale and he was also involved in the Prague Biennale. Besides the
2010 Venice Architecture Biennale, he was specially invited for the John Cage Experiments And Its Context at NCCA, Moscow. His other Solo exhibitions
include “Daily Music” – IzuZone Penang (2012); “Forte Piano”, Rome (2012); “Il Tesoro Nascosto”, The Westin Excelsior, Rome (2012) and at GNAM
(Galleria Nazionale d’arte Moderna, Rome); “Hidden Treasure” Bangkok (2011); Concentr Azione, Milan (2011); and “Gone With The Wind” exhibition
Malaysian Institute of Arts in 1991. He also obtained a Double Major in Oil Painting and Printmaking. Chin
Hoe’s artistic talent was apparent from a young age. Having spent a great deal of time in learning European
and American art, he embarked on an experimental journey with oil and acrylic in the later years. His solo
and group exhibitions include Pameran Bakat Muda Sezaman at the National Art Gallery Malaysia in 1990
and Serendipity at Artfilio Gallery, Singapore in 2007. Chin Hoe has won many awards which included
today. He establishes an approach of traditional classic Western still-life with a refreshing emphasis of
the subject itself. All of Yap’s works are painted with intricate details, concentrating on the aesthetic and
preciousness of the subjects. A simplistic blue flora has added aesthetic elements for the Chinese vase,
the flutter of sparrow wings, graceful of the batik drapes together creates a soft harmony to his painting.
Cheong Soo Pieng
Soo Pieng’s mastery of the painterly technique by the late 1960s placed him on mature style. In Abstract
Lanscape, Soo Pieng deploys his command and understanding of the medium to a quintessentially
natural subject. The master sought to impregnate painting with poetic sensibility with minimal abstraction
pictorial conception. He casts a deep emotional resonance here – in seeking a sublime and poetic
experience. Cress used geometric forms and saturated colours to capture the plains of the mountainous.
A house stands steadfast and tranquil and protected on all sides by mountains. Below, there is a stream
making its way for the rushing river. The symmetrical composition offers a sense of stillness within a
surreal parade of scene. Soo Pieng uses opacity and transparency of cold colours to create a balance
reducing spatial tension between abstract forms. The current piece shows his fusion compositional
mastery and sensitivity to the atmospheres and rhythms of a landscape to the fullest.
Born in 1917, Amoy (China). Soo Pieng received his training in the Xiamen Academy of Fine Art and
Shanghai. In 1946, Soo Pieng came to Singapore and took a teaching position at the Nanyang Academy
of Fine Arts (NAFA, 1947). A life fueled by an infinite passion for art, in 1961, Soo Pieng decided to be
a fulltime artist. Throughout his career, he held 18 acclaimed solo exhibitions in Singapore and around
the world, and received many honours. Soo Pieng was an experimental artist who combined in a very
personal and original way through different media. Besides painting on canvas, he ventured into ceramic,
sculpture, installation art, collage and mixed media. Filled with an insatiable yearning for art, the artist
acquired major art movements and techniques in the West. Soon after, he developed his unique style
– a new style of abstract and figurative art. His signature works are figures with elongated limbs and
torso, almond-shaped faces and eyes. This style of painting which comes to define the Nanyang style of
painting, attracted a lot of followers.
Born in 1968, Kedah. Graduated from Kuala Lumpur College of Art in 1990 with a
Diploma in Fine Art. Kit Siang has always worked in watercolour which he believes it
enables to present the ideas of luminosity and clarity. Usually he derives his theme from
the object around him ranging from the cutleries in the kitchen to household tools. Kit
Siang sets them against a picturesque background. His paintings also provide a sense of
nostalgia: the old pottery, oil lamps and clogs remind viewer scene of yesteryear. Enjoy the
sunshine, depicted a traditional Chinese wooden clogs leaning against a brick while facing
the sunlight as if having a sunbathing. Kit Siang’s sensitivity towards details enabled him to
capture the reflection of light and the unique texture of each object. While for The Beauty
of Arrangement-Friendship, a few items are deliberately arranged on a table accordingly.
As suggested by the title, Kit Siang seems honouring ‘friendship’. A teapot and a cup, a
Chinese brush and a rice paper losses its meaning without one or another. His title was
amplified by a pair of panda poster at the back; one of the panda is holding his partner
suggesting the closeness of their relationship.
GERARD PIETER ADOLFS
(Semarang, 1899 – The Netherlands, 1968)
Three Figures, 2009
Oil on canvas: 30 x 40 cm
Signed, lower right : R, Adolfs
MYR 18,000 – 25,000
USD 5,400 – 7,500
Adolfs was focusing on mainly East Javanese landscapes, urban scenes, temple gates
and scenes with proa boats. His interest in the architectural element increased in equal
measure. The human figures still featured in his compositions as mere “extras”, not as
characters. Some of these paintings had a menacing, even macabre quality to them, due to
the dramatic light, a result of chiaroscuro. Adolfs probably picked this up from Caravaggio
(the inventor of chiaroscuro), whose works and those of other Old Masters, he had
studied in Rome during his 1928 study tour.
In his works he has always attempted to represent the light, color and the simple joy of
life that impregnates the native scenes of the East. Adolfs had refined his style of painting,
and had grown into a truly brilliant interpreter of the fierce tropical light. The colors are
perfectly ablaze within the light and shades. As can be seen from the works reproduced,
he has a bold, vigorous style, applying his pigments with quick strokes of the palette knife.
The main subjects of his works are scenes of Java, Bali, Japan (market sceneries, cockfights,
landscapes and townscapes) and of North Africa.
The painting Fresh Sand has a unique
composition. The way the artist framed
the seascape is rather original. Half of the
painting is painted with plain beige-ochre
sand; while the other half is fully of liveliness.
Five fishermen, in silhouette, are pushing a
boat ashore. To add details into the painting,
at the far of the horizon, Chiow Teng
includes a floating boya.
Born in1956, Kuala Penyu (Sabah). Awang Damit is one of the renowned abstract expressionists
in Malaysia. After graduating from UiTM in Fine Arts in 1983, he crafted his way into the
Catholic University of America to Washington D.C., to obtain Masters in Fine Arts (1989).
Awang Damit now lectures in UITM. He has held positions as the Curator of the Art Gallery
and Head of the Fine Arts Department before being appointed an Associate Professor in 2000.
While lecturing in UiTM, he completed the lauded series Marista (2002) and Iraga (2011).
He also has started on his fourth series – Paya Ramahe – with a touch of modernity. His
different styles of painting are what make people more attracted to his artwork. Awang
Damit belongs to the second generation abstract expressionists in modern Malaysian art. This
group widened the scope of their artistic expression turning landscapes and nature into a
new set of visual language. In his paintings, everything is reduced to its essential elements,
nothing superfluous or unnecessary retained. Colours are essential components. Immersed
in a selection of earth colour, the master creates abstract spaces with his signature broad and
daring brushstrokes. Awang’s non-representational painting, geometrical forms with diverse
lines against subdivided background, is often unique and optimistic in spirit. Awang Damit has
held various exhibitions both in groups as well as solo including the Bentuk and Makna by
Galeri Seni FSSR (UiTM, 2000) and Intipati Budaya – Satu Sintesis show at the National Art
Gallery (Kuala Lumpur, 1995). Awang Damit has also actively involved himself in shows abroad
including in China, Taiwan, Japan and London.
Kimberley Street was created in the late 19th century where it was once populated by
Teochews. This street was once where the ‘Teowchew nang’ made bihun (rice noodles) and
mee suah (vermicelli). Therefore it is not surprising when this was the place where food stalls
tend to be attracted. For decades, hawkers and food lovers have been gathering along this
street. In Lee’s painting the lively and dynamic have been truthfully presented, the amounts of
stalls and customers showed the hustle-bustle of the street. Weng Fatt successfully captures the
essence of these buildings and ambience while bringing his viewer’s attention back to the beauty
and exquisite details of the buildings, events and people living around here.
Born in 1967, Kuala Lumpur. He received a formal artistic training at the Kuala Lumpur College
of Art. Currently, he is a full time artist who his works are exhibit both locally and internationally.
Weng Fatt started out as a watercolourist and in 1995 he decided to try on oil method. His
primary subject centers on the old heritage buildings that bear testimony to the city historical
past.
Khaw Sia
Khaw Sia’s love of orchid is reflected in his uncountable paintings or different types of orchids. The current
piece Orchids Galore is an excellent painting of Khaw Sia.
Khaw Sia chooses to depict the full bloom of orchids. More than 20 types of orchids, namely colourful cattleya,
phalaenopsis, vanda, cymbidium and encyclia, are composed juxtapose to each other as if a great chamber
of symphony orchestra that comprises different musicians, playing in a large concert hall. These colour
orchids stand vying for attention. Khaw Sia pays great attention to composition and details in treating each
type. He studies on the texture, colours, light impression and the harmony of foreground and background.
Knowing all the characteristics of the orchids, the artist arranged them according to its size and colour in
relation to line, tonality, texture and pattern and Remarkably, Khaw Sia did not neglect the leaves characteristics.
Waxy surface of orchid leaves can be seen from the glistening droplets of dew. Detailed brush strokes
matches the setting and mood of the painting as if the sweet fragrance of flower from the garden travelling
to the audiences. The amalgamation of these colourful assortments of orchid seems bringing the significance
of the Chinese Mid-Autumn – reunion – just as the date of completion of this painting.
Khaw Sia is a Chinese born artist migrated to Penang with his family in 1937. Before settling down in Penang,
he studied at the Sung Hua Academy in Shanghai where he engaged with several prominent Chinese brush
painters. Utilising Chinese brush technique, Khaw Sia’s landscapes was greatly praised by the well-known
Chinese brush artist Xu Beihong. In 1932, Khaw Sia took a brief but private lesson under the guidance of Sir
Russell Flint in England who was the president of Britain’s Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour. Under
Flint’s tutelage, Khaw Sia developed his exquisite meticulous style of the English watercolour. Integrating the
painting technique of the east and the west, Khaw Sia’s Chinese brush and English watercolouring techniques
has reached a harmonious fusion in his paintings. Khaw Sia is a well-travelled artist with extensive imagination
and his paintings have a combination of grand scope and focus on details.
(b. Penang,1972)
The Struggle, 2010
Oil on Canvas: 127 x 127 cm
Signed and dated, lower middle: Chng Huck Theng, 2010
MYR 7,000 - 11,000
USD 2,100 - 3,300
A composition of striking tone of colours is the foremost
in its appeal – a cream white background with black
pours on the canvas rhythmically creates a stark contract
between the light and dark. The white curved trajectory
flowing from top to bottom attracts particular attention.
Not having any concrete ideas of the result, Ch’ng
work showcase a bright palette, splashes of paint and a
spontaneous yet structured technique.
The contemporary artist Ch’ng Huck Theng born in 1972
in Malaysia, graduated with a Bachelor and Master degree
from University of Wollongong, Australia. Ch’ng’s picks
up his skills in Australia in 1994 out of his interest and
not with the intention of becoming an artist. As of today,
he has had 8 solo art exhibitions in Malaysia, Korea, and
Indonesia. Ch’ng Huck Theng is currently the youngest
in history to sit as a Member in the Board of Trustee,
National Art Gallery Malaysia and also the youngest
to be President for the oldest art society in Malaysia –
The Penang Art Society. Many of his masterpieces have
become the collection at prominent art instituitions
like the Singapore Art Museum, Shanghai Art Museum
and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts
(ENSBA). In 2010, Ch’ng is the only Malaysian awarded
the Asian Art Award in Seoul, Korea and the shortlist
winner in the prestigious London International Creative
Competition (LICC) England that attracted thousands of
entries from 73 countries.
Yeong Seak Ling
Born in 1948, Ipoh. Yeong Seak Ling is a gifted self-taught artist. He began practiced
with charcoal then to watercolour (he spent 25 years in this medium) and slowly
moved to acrylic (1995 – 2005) and oil (2005 – to date). He began his full time
artistic career in 1991 and has been founders of many organisations namely Galeri
Art Point and ArtGroup – Penang. Besides, he also participated in solos and groups
exhibitions including the recent ones in Shanghai – Art International Shanghai 2010
by The Bund Art Gallery. In the early years, Seak Ling mostly work on abstract works.
During the later years of his career, Seak Ling felt the need to reflect the aesthetic
value of his own culture, thus, he moved away from his comfort zone and gave
attempt to super-realism technique.
Kampung Life is painted with incredible detail and realistic in approach to rendering
Seak Ling’s innermost feelings and thoughts about the beauty of his culture. The
motif of the batik cloths have been vividly depicted on the canvas. While staring
into a mist so formless and keeping the baby into her embraces, the young mother
eyes have no focus. Seak Ling deftly depicts a difficult life of the woman. The use of
contrasting light and dark colours reveal the key element to the dramatic impact of
the painting.
Born in 1972, Penang. He graduated from the Surrey Institute of Art and Design, University College with a degree in Fine Art in 1991. He then joined
the Elle Six Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur as a curator from 1991 to 1994. Pheh has taken part in various solo and group exhibitions before he decided to
become a full-time artist. Since 2010, he has been based in Australia as an artist. It Hao is interested in using spatial organisation in his art to create new
dimensions to lifeless cityscapes and landscape. He is very careful in allocation of space, both for its’ purpose and aesthetic consideration.
In Winter Morialta Conservation Park, the negative space has provided the viewer a certain sense of depth; the tree bushes act as opening passage, bringing
viewer attention towards the scree slope, which is one of the conservation park geographical characteristic. Apart from this, It Hao is famous of his weton-wet
technique; Pheh fades hard edge strokes by adding water to his existing colours. This fluidic approach, when the colours and water are magically
organising themselves on the paper, make the visual results unpredictable and spontaneous.
It is a very compelling self-portrait, both in its depiction and
conception. Syed placed himself in the central while his identity
three at each side. The use of bright contrasting colours against
dark background reflects his passion for art. He depicts himself
as a meagre figure clads with a highly decorated overcoat with
a thick brown beard. Syed did not conceal his love for peace, for
art and his home country for woman he loved. Each of these is
clearly depicted in a naïve yet in a most affectionate and truthful
way lying bare to the readers.
Born in 1943, India. He received his art education at the
Sulaiman Esa
Born in Johor Bharu in 1941, Sulaiman was the youngest son in a large family of gifted artists.
His early mentor was his mother, uncle and so were his elder siblings. The Bukit Zaharah
School was where his primary schooling began and continued at the Johor Bharu English
College. After completing his secondary schooling, Sulaiman obtained the much coveted
Johor State scholarship to formal studies in art at The Art College of Hornsey, London in
1962. On completion of his study at Hornsey, Sulaiman continued his post-graduate study
in printmaking at Atelier 13, Paris for a year. In 1970, he joined the School of Art & Design,
UiTM (then was ITM). Whilst at UiTM, he went for study in costume design in Italy (1975);
obtained his Master in Fine Art in 1981,(Maryland, USA) and PhD in Islamic Studies at
Temple University, USA.
Sulaiman has had three solo show in his creative life; Ke Arah Tauhid (Toward Unity, at
the Australian High Commission, KL, 1984); Insyirah: The Art of Sulaiman Esa from
1980-2000,(Galeri Petronas, 2001); and Rajaah: Art, idea and creativity of Sulaiman Esa from
1950s-2011,(National Visual Art Gallery, KL. 2011). After working for nearly three decades at
UiTM, Sulaiman is finally now a full time artist!
Warisan lll was shown during his second solo exhibition Insyirah 2001, evidences his early
effort in his search for inspiration from traditional Malay arts and crafts. This is to elevate
traditional forms, motifs, materials and processes to the status that they once enjoyed
before the colonization and modernization of the Malay Peninsula. In this context, tradition
is indexed by the batik sarong cloth as canvas to work on. The stylization of floral motifs,
both in abstract, geometric shapes, the subtlety of refined colour renditions are but the
embodiment of Malay Islamic aesthetic principles rooted from the Qur’anic worldview. It
is important to take into consideration that the question of Malay identity is relevant to all
Malaysians, since after the National Cultural Congress of 1971, it has become officially the
basis of common national identity.
On completion of his secondary schooling, Sulaiman embarked on a rigorous self-taught study specifically in painting and drawing. In sharpening his visual
perception coupled with technical skills in figurative and landscape painting, Sulaiman was drawn to renowned European masters’ work especially the
Impressionists such as Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Van Gogh. The Impressionists’ renditions of simmering colors under different intensity of atmospheric light that
made each version subtly differ from the other strike a chord in him. As he once said: “When I looked at the Impressionists’ colours I went crazy; there is
something in this crystalline colours that resonate in me.” He became obsessed in imitating their painting techniques including the violent and emotionally
charged strokes of Van Gogh whose dramatic artistic life then has a profound impact on Sulaiman.
Signed and dated, Lower left, 2002: Kow Leong Kiang
MYR 17,000 - 28,000
USD 5,100 - 8,400
Dreamer is a simple yet strong painting. It features a nude native with a giant red hibiscus
on her head. The brunette sitter leaned forward on a pillow, she seems engaging to the
void. The artist’s subtle treatment of the sitter, in full of detail, captures her facial expression
and the tender gesture of love.
The earthly palette on the canvas imitates life. With its loose application of paint, this
work shows the painter’s acute observation and imaginative insight to the mood and the
personality of the sitter. It is a strong portrait that captivates viewers as if drawing them
into the painting.
Born in 1970, Selangor. Leong Kiang pursued his formal art education in Kuala Lumpur
College of Art in 1991. Knowing for his depiction of female beauty of the East Coast
Malaysian, Leong Kiang established his name in the local art circle. He won the Grand
of fellow artists such as Mr. Woo Seng Non and, in 2006, Dato’ Tan
decided to paint again. Using his son’s leftover oil paints, he painted
a work entitled Wine, Woman and Song. Favourably, this painting has
received favourable comments from artists and this leads to his solo
exhibition in 2009 at Galeri Seni Mutiara. The Perfect Storm is one of
the abstract paintings featured in his third solo exhibition held in 2010.
Inspired by photos snapped by the Hubble Space Telescope, Dato’ Tan
has expressed his appreciation of the wonder of the universe through
painting. This stunning image has been associated with the image of
Omega Nebula, it was actually an effect of radiation from nearby stars
sculpts a roiling wave of gas and dust. However using the combination
of colours that encompassed light blue and green and brownish, Tan
was able to interpret this image resemble the bubbly ocean and at the
same time rolling wave that hit against the hard, rocking cliffs.
One Morning in the Mountain is a mystical series of 2009. It is an abstract landscape that leads audiences into infinity. Combination of cold colours, green,
blue and white give way to the supernatural feeling of a secluded mountain. The breeze of white paint across green-bluish background allows the imaginary
and real components to be detected.
Born in 1966 in Kuantan, Pahang. Soh Boon Kiong studied and worked in Paris, France from 1988 to 1993. Most of the artist’s works have much influenced
by the French Impressionists as well as the “Lyrical Expressionism” movement started in 50’s in Paris. He has been living and working in Amagasaki, Japan
since 1998 with his Japanese wife and two children. Boon Kiong was the second Resident Artist in University of Malaya’s history, appointed in 2010 since
the late Datuk Ibrahim Hussein (1971-1978).
Besides, Boon Kiong also draws inspiration from the Chinese “San-Sui” (landscape) old masters paintings as well as the Chinese calligraphers. This unique
artistic expression can be seen on the artist’s One Morning in the Mountain of which he merges the French lyrical expressionism with the Chinese
landscape approach.
Boon Kiong’s works are widely collected including collectors from Paris, Tokyo, London, New Zealand, Estonia, Singapore as well as his home country. Over
20 years of artistic experience through different countries deepen Boon Kiong’s fusion of Eastern and Western style throughout his expression of art.
Basoeki Abdullah
Born in Solo, January 27, 1915, he is the second son of Abdullah
Soerjosoebroto, a prominent landscape painter. He studied at the
Academia van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague (the Netherlands).
Basoeki Abdullah started painting since he was 5 years old in simple
drawing, and at 10 he travelled to Surabaya and Bali where he started
portrait painting. During 1933, he held his first exhibition in Bandung.
Basoeki brought his painting to RMP. Sosrokartono, RA. Kartini’s brother,
who was very impressed by his painting. Sosrokartono and Prince of
Mangkunegoro VII became an important art patron who greatly supported
his painting career until Basoeki become a famous painter. During that
time he continued his art education at Academia van Beeldende Kunsten
in the Hague, the Netherlands.
Basoeki Abdullah is one of the most prominent Indonesian maestros in
portrait paintings. The late artist was well-known for his realistic paintings.
Besides painting of natural beauty and sensuous landscape, he is also noted
for his portraits of beautiful women, as well as painting of scenes from
legends that are also tempered with lyrical and overly sensual treatment.
His great fond in painting women’s figure perhaps derived from his
passion in exploring the beauty of women who are attractive. The artist
gained the public recognition after winning a painting competition held in
conjunction with the Netherland’s Queen Juliana ascension to throne on
6 September 1948.
USD 7,500 - 9,000
Abdullah Ariff has interpreting Penang harbour in a simply beautiful and
fully sentimental watercolour painting. It is a highly skilled work of which
only an accomplished artist could achieve. Though it is straightforward, this
topography painting is marked by an unpretentious but pleasing composition.
Fishing boats are lining up along the jetty. All boats are sailing except the one
at the centre; its sail is lowered down. It seems to waiting for loading of goods.
A meagre man carries a sack walking on a jetty. It seems that Ariff carefully
placed the wooden jetty as foreground, not just to create the depth of the
painting, instead to draw spectators into the painting.
Born in 1904, Penang. Abdullah Ariff was an art teacher at the Anglo-Chinese
School, Penang which is now known as the Methodist Boys School. Ariff is a
renowned watercolourist.
MYR 3,000-8,000
USD 900 - 2,400
Mangoes is an interesting painting of Chia Yu Chian: its’ superficial of spatial. The use of light
and darkness was not so much of Yu Chian’s concern. The composition integrates his interest
in spatial relations of which he weighs a big mango against three small ones to the right. Four
mangoes are carefully studied; spotted yellowish green suggested their ripeness.
Born in 1936 in Johor; Chia Yu Chian received formal art training in Nanyang Academy of Fine
Arts (NAFA), Singapore in 1958 under tutelage of Chen Wen Hsi and Cheong Soo Pieng. Yu
Chian is the first artist from the Straits Settlements to gain a French government scholarship to
in 1962, he opened his personal art studio in Penang.
An unusual, intriguing work created by the late Tew Nai Tong:
a few ladies swim gracefully above a lotus pond. Unlike his
common subject matter depicting the traditional Malayan
life Nai Tong usually painted, the painting opens up a space of
imagination to viewers. Behind the pond, instead of clouds,
eccentrically the artist painted three vertical rectangles. Blue
at each side and white in the centre, it seems like a gateway
to enter into the realm of imagination. A visible, evident
texture, quick and determined stokes of brush indicate Nai
Tong’s deep and ardent temperament in capturing the flash
of the other beings.
Dato’ Chuah Thean Theng
This is an early batik work of Dato’ Chuah Thean Teng. Unlike his famous
round and full bosoms, this early work is elongated: coconut trees and the
artist favourite kampong lady. As usual, Thean Teng disregards for proportion
for accuracy. Houses surrounded by banana trees are placed below oversized
coconut trees. Instead he exalts more on an elegant style and the artistic
appearance of a painting. In Kampung, it shows a rather rural and localized life.
A meager woman is carrying a vase on her head while walking towards the
direction of a sampan which seemed to be a necessity for daily commuting.
In this serene scene, the sampan, fully equipped and full loaded, appears to
lacerate the stillness of river. Two A-framed Malay wooden houses, simple
and crude are placed at each side. The spatial arrangement of this painting
is rather interesting. River seems to flow towards an opened yet mysterious
and undefined background. Thean Theng captures the sacred perpetual of a
kampong life than an ephemeral moment of life.
Gasing is a traditional game particularly popular amongst the villagers in the State of Kelantan and
Melaka. It is one of the favourite topics in Mat Hussin’s batik. Besides the main gasing players,
different groups of villagers are in their discussion of gasing; others are reviewing the condition
of their gasing. The batik master always likes adding subtle details for his background. Further
back, we see a typical scene in Kelantan of which sarongs are drying at the patio of a house.
Mat Hussin also paid great attention into the sarong of the male villagers, none of them are
in repetitive.
Born in 1938, Kelantan. Ismail Mat Hussin is Malaysia’s most senior living master in batik painting
today. He uses the batik technique to capture the aesthetic Malaysia life in the east coast. Village
scenes have been one of his favourite subjects and daily life are recorded like a picturesque
graduated from the faculty of Art and Design at the Indonesian
Arts Institute (ISI), Yogyakarta majoring Visual Communication
Design (1990). His first exhibition was in Dewata Gallery
(1987) at Taman Budaya Denpasar. Being a designer did not
satisfy him as an artist then he decided to engage in full time
painting in 1998. Since his first solo exhibition in Ubud (1990)
his name was considered as valuable painter in Indonesia. He
held his solo exhibition at National Gallery, “Teater Rakyat”,
Jakarta, 2010; “Silent Word”, Gajah Gallery, Singapore (2008),
Mandala, Bidadari, Ubud-Bali (2007), “Belief, Rupa Gallery”,
Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali and other country. He received awards
as the Best in Design Arts (during the 4th and 6th anniversary
of ISI, as the finalist of Philip Morris Award in 1994 and Indofood
Art Award 2002, Second Place, Jakarta. Through his work he
expresses his gratitude to God’s creations and gives alternative
view of Bali than its usual touristy image. He gave specific themes
on his work from which other painters did not pay attention to.
This exciting and talented artist has participated in a number of
group and solo exhibitions throughout Indonesia and abroad.
Born in 1934, Kelantan. He is one of the most established artists in Malaysia who received art education in St. Martin’s School of Art in London
(1964) under a local scholarly. Throughout his career, Khalil has held many solo and group exhibitions locally and internationally. He mainly works
with watercolour and acrylic where his styles ranged from realism to abstract paintings. Khalil Ibrahim was best known for his paintings of figures in
silhouetted forms, through his paint brush some of the faceless, lookalike shadows become alive with passion as the brushes flow back and forth on the
canvas. The Pantai Sabak Fishermen series is one of Khalil’s best known series. His passion in human figures is infused with his nostalgia for homeland in
the east coast. To the left, three fishermen are hauling their fishing net; while to the right, another three are seen facing and listening to each other as
if having a conversation. Though, the painting seemingly depicting fishermen’s usual daily task, it reveals a magnified detail of a glimpse of a community
that full of life and love.
Hendra Gunawan
Born in Bandung, 1918. He taught at the Indonesian Fine Art Academy (ASRI), Yogyakarta
in 1957. His paintings dating between the late 1950s and the 1960s – believed by many the
best period in his artistic career – are scarce. He took part in founding the Front Seniman in
Bandung, and Pelukis Rakyat (People’s Artists) in Yogyakarta. He also established the art club
Pusaka Sunda together with Barli, Obon and some other friends. He is undoubtedly one of the
Indonesia’s greatest pioneered modernism artists and was considered to be one of the best
and most versatile painters in Indonesia. He died in Bali 1983.
Hendra Gunawan’s conveyed his greatest feelings and deepest emotions of his country and
people. His paintings are full of sympathy, compassion, and affection about common people.
Hendra’s stylistic figures and landscapes are perhaps influenced by his profound knowledge of
rich signs and symbols of Javanese culture. Java’s monumental landscapes are often illustrated
in a decorative approach with bright colours. His works always relate to a deeper level of
traditional artistic expression in Indonesia. Hendra’s figures are never passive; they always
depicted as active subjects. Many of his paintings depict the lives of a fish seller, a fruit seller, and
also a chicken seller. He tends to use the natural objects such as a huge tree, a sandy beach and
a blue sea as background to his main subject just like the present lot. It describes the theme of
the common people’s daily life. Hendra explores their activities in his inimitable genuine style.
Biring series is a 2006/7 series representing cock-fighting. This is one of the important series of the artist’s career of which he took a daring initiative focuses
on animal movements rather than figures as he excelled in. These two sketches are studies of cockerels fighting in different postures and composition. The
hostility of tension between two birds is fully represented through bold and expressive brush strokes and is completed with start and vigorous lines. Though
these are studies works, Yusof Ghani did not show any sign of slacking off in depicting his best expressive brush strokes.
Born in 1950, Johor. Yusof Ghani is a graduate from the Catholic University of America, Washington DC, USA. His first solo exhibition at Anton Gallery in
Washington, D.C. with the "Protest" Series was an achievement. Yusof’s successful art journey began by introducing the most collectible series, Tari, in 1983.
It follows with other series including Protest, Topeng I, II, III, Wayang, Hijau, Segerak and Wajah. He is known practicing strong lines and spontaneous marks
on a dynamic composition. Most of his works are stroke-based rendering.
Painted in the early 60’s, the painting depicts the snow
landscape which constitute the backyard of the artist’s studio
while studying formal art education in London. Stylistically
the painting evidenced the strong influence of Impressionist
painters such as Pissarro, Sisley and Monet whose work
provided great source of inspiration and model for the artist
in the early phase of his artistic career. The subtle hues white,
grey and rusty brown which capture the bleak and desolate
landscape with the absent of human figures and barren trees,
to a certain extent embody the psychological state of the
artist’s mind who find the sudden change of environment of
one coming from warm and sunny Malaysia to the cold and
depressing gray London landscape!
This painting marks an important historical moment of the official opening of
the Penang Bridge in 1985 by Tun Dr. Mahathir. This painting is a typical work
of post-impressionism. Yu Chian took an aspect of Impressionism and arrived
at his own individual style. He manipulated colours by breaking through the
science of light as cherished by most impressionists. Four major colours
dominate the painting including blue, white, black and some ochre. The use
of broken brush stroke for texture creates an optical mix. Reflection of the
bridge can be discerned through the waving sea. Behind the bridge, we see
an emergent Penang island where construction cranes are found everywhere.
It seems that Yu Chian intentionally disregard the passage of time in order to
capture a significant event that changes the transportation system that affects
the life pattern of every Penangite.
Hoessein Enas
Dato’ Mohd. Hoessein Enas
Portrait of a New Resident in Malaysia is an exceptional portrait par excellence.
It is a half body three quarter portrait of a young attractive Caucasian. She has a
pair of big blue eyes with long blonde hair. Her nose is long and her lips, slightly
curled up, are full. She is at her apex of youth. She wears a sleeveless blue top
and a simple gold necklace. It seems much to say about her beautiful smiles and
gaze. The sitter was new to Malaya. Her passion and expectation for new life
can be seen through her eyes. A pair of blue eyes twinkling with hope, instead
of looking at the artist, she sat gazing out to the world. She smiles with dignity
serene seemingly not worry about life. Dato’ Hoessein Enas exquisitely captures
the sitter’s personality and emotion to the viewer.
The portrait is a commission work of a wedding gift by a couple in 1971. Humbly
confessed to the art patron that it was the first portrait of a Caucausian,
Dato’ Hoessein Enas was feeling less confident. Nevertheless, the artist flaunts
his talent as a great portrait master. Having had the sitter for a few days, Dato’
Hoessein Enas spent three weeks to complete.
Born in 1924 – 1995, Bogor (Indonesia). Dato’ Hoessein Enas was a talent selftaught
artist who mastered a European realist portraiture style. Enas was a
member of Fellow Royal Society of Arts, London; member of Board of Trustees;
former Head of Design and Staging Services, Radio and Television Malaysia; and
founder and first President of Angkatan Pelukis Semenanjung.
Srihadi Sudarsono
Srihadi is an artist with deep cultural background. His integrity as a creative artist was
formed through his formal education as well as through his life experiences. There
are two important aspects in Srihadi’s paintings: first, the artistic value of colour
composition; and the second, the philosophical value that reflects the meaning of
life, cultural, and social value. Some of his figurative paintings, especially the dancers,
look deceptively similar, and that the figures have become stereotypes. However,
one should try to appreciate and study the details and minimal variations rather than
a formal depiction. Srihadi pays particular attention to the characteristic of dancers
and the artistic form of a dance. Every dance has its language or vocabulary of
movement and type of costume imbued with a philosophical meaning. The dancing
figures in Srihadi’s painting are characterized with the use of other elements such
as mask, fan, mirror, offerings or flowers. In the present lot the figure is posed in an
elegant style holding a fan in front of her chest. Her gaze is directed us as if she in
contemplating in something or perhaps just a symbolical meaning of her own self
Dragon is a legendary creature that features in the myth of many cultures including Chinese.
Ho’s painting of dragon could be associated with the Chinese dragon, long scaled serpentine
creature with four legs, horns of a deer, head of a crocodile, demon eyes etc. that resembles
of nine animals. Traditionally, dragons carry the symbolisms of potent and auspicious powers.
They control over water, rainfall and floods. According to Chinese folklore dragons can show
themselves as water spouts or twister over water; in Khay Beng’s work, this belief were being
demonstrated. Using blurry, uneven, light colour spots the dragon was seen moving upwards
rising to the sky, emerging from the water.
Born in 1933. After graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in 1958, Ho has opted to
continue his studies in Italy at Rome academy of Fine Art. His first solo exhibition was held at the
Chin Kang, Penang where the proceeds were later on used to fund his study in Italy. During his
year in Italy, he has been awarded with six gold and silver medals in competition in Italy; and few
solo exhibitions were being held at Galleria Guila Flavia and Galleria Michelangelo. Among all, his
biggest achievement was when he was being invited to exhibit in Italy’s National Art Gallery in
Rome; and was awarded the Overseas Chinese Arts Association Price.
