Back in 1974, when Specialized was founded as a company that imported the finest bicycle components

The father of the BG F.I.T. effort, Andy Pruitt, EdD, PA, and the Director 

of the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, has been helping cyclists 

ride better for more than 30 years and literally wrote the book on cycling 

and medicine, Andy Pruitt’s Complete Medical Guide for Cyclists. Dr. Pruitt 

has broken BG F.I.T.’s Biomechanical Integration into a few basic principles.

PRINCIPLE 1: Biomechanical Integration Is a Marriage Between Bicycle and Body. 

If the two are incompatible, the marriage will fail. While a bike’s position can be adjusted in almost 

limitless ways, a rider’s body can perform at a high level only within a small range of positions. 

PRINCIPLE 2: Make the Bike Fit the Body; Don’t Force the Body to Fit the Bike.

“I MET EGGER IN A BIKE SHOP when I was doing a sales pitch. He was a mechanic and was 

bold enough to tell me that the stuff that I was selling was no good,” says Specialized’s Founder 

and President Mike Sinyard. “He said he could easily do it better, so we brought him on and with 

the first project, he completely blew us away, and he has continued to impress us ever since.” 

To say Egger has been working at Specialized for a long time is a severe understatement—there are 

full-grown redwood forests near the office that he planted when he first started. Ask him what motivates 

him to such lofty levels of dedication, and he’ll quickly tell you that he and his team are driven by the 

freedom to make truly differentiated designs. “Something I always say is that a bike needs to look fast, 

even when it’s just sitting there,” says Egger. “Every design should instill confidence: Our work should 

help people ride better, or faster, or just more often, and in every case, our work should make you look 

great when you’re riding a bicycle.” 

“Robert can design bikes, equipment and just about every other kind of thing way beyond what most 

people could ever dream of. We’ve been working together for almost 20 years and he still surprises 

us all,” says Sinyard. “Not to mention the fact that he can still win the sprint on the lunch ride using 

a single-speed mountain bike.” 

No question that Egger is unabashedly competitive; he also admits to being somewhat stubborn. 

“I want everything to look beautiful”, he says. “That’s a challenge when we’re chasing goals like light 

and stiff,” Egger says with some visible contemplation. “But our team here is so awesome—we always

Body Geometry saddles are available in multiple widths, so there is one that will fit you perfectly. 

Traditionally, saddle width has been determined by educated guesses based on experience, opinion and 

a little pseudoscience: If a design worked for a saddle maker or his circle of friends, it was judged good. 

After exhaustive scientific research, we found that the most effective way to ensure 

comfort was to make saddles that, like shorts, shoes, gloves, helmets and just about 

anything else that contacts your body, are available in different sizes. Investigation 

showed us that few people, even those with identical waist sizes and weights, 

have the same distance between their sit bones. So narrow saddles aren’t 

necessarily the best for smaller people and wider saddles don’t always work for 

bigger riders. Complicating matters even more is the fact that the relative position 

a rider assumes on a bike affects the distance between his or her sit bones; 

the more aggressive the position, the closer the sit bones taper together. To help 

any rider custom-fit his or her saddle, we’ve created the Body Geometry 

Saddle Fit System, which accurately measures actual sit bone width. 

From there, selecting the proper lab-tested Body Geometry saddle from 

any of our three widths is as simple as reading the size printed on the back.

Sondra Williamson

DON’T LET THE PONYTAIL and all-American smile fool you. Sondra Williamson is a onewoman 

wrecking crew. An expert-level Downhill, Dual Slalom and 4X racer, Williamson has been 

known to drop trails that 98% of everyone else with a bike is deathly afraid of. Whenever she can 

shake free from her job in USA Marketing long enough for a road trip, she pushes her limits in 

NORBA National gravity events and on trails like Whistler’s Clown Shoes and Southern California’s 

Tunnel Trail. “The 2006 NORBA at Sugar Mountain in North Carolina definitely tested my limits,” 

says Williamson. “It was a mess of slippery, muddy rocks and twisted roots—it brought home the 

reality of the skill it takes to race at the absolute highest level.” 

But that’s not the whole story with Williamson—she shreds a whole lot more than just bikes. A former 

striker for UC Santa Barbara’s soccer squad, she rides motocross, snowboards, runs marathons and has 

even raced stock cars. “My cousins were really into auto racing and I figured why not give it a shot?” 

says the 27-year-old of her foray into four-wheel flying. 

A native of Carpinteria, California, where she picked up a love for all things outdoors, Williamson came 

to Specialized in 2005 and spends her days working on marketing and communications programs with 

Specialized’s independent bicycle dealer partners around the United States. “When you’re young you 

learn about the stereotype of the typical 9-to-5 office 

job and hope that you never find yourself down that

TREAD DESIGN/PROFILE 

When it comes to tread designs, we’re junkies. Whether it’s road or mountain, the design 

of the tire and shape of the profile have a significant impact on its ride. 

• Dual Radius tread on our Mondo and 

All Condition tires, inspired by superbike 

motorcycle tires, provides maximum speed 

with a huge control benefit. In a straight line, 

there is minimal tread contact, to decrease 

rolling resistance. In a corner, more of the 

rubber hits the road, providing better grip. 

• Knob patterns on off-road tires are tuned 

to the experience. Our Fast Trak tread, for 

example, is closely spaced in the center for 

fast rolling, with shoulder knobs that contact

a supple ride and outstanding puncture resistance. So we developed 

a unique construction for our S-Works Fast Trak SLK and S-Works 

Fast Trak LK. 

We start with our light, high-performance 127-tpi tube-type casing 

and combine it with a tubeless-ready Kevlar bead, race-proven

How do you make the best mountain bike race tire in the 

world? Listen to the world’s best racers. They asked us to 

start with the Fast Trak 2.0+ and clip the center knobs for 

lower rolling resistance, shorten the side knobs for a more 

secure bite, reduce the weight and make it sealant-friendly. 

We gave them the S-Works Fast Trak SLK (Super Low Knob) 

1.9 with a 50% reduction in knob height and a 127 tpi casing 

that’s also sealant-friendly. 

S-WORKS FAST TRAK LK 

Even the best mountain bikers in the world need a largevolume

We engineered the Enduro to be a tire that you can pedal 

to the top, and then completely rely on to hold your line 

during the descent. The deep, widely-spaced tread allows 

this tire to work well in both loose sections and on big 

slabs, with large shoulder lugs to provide plenty of bite
