of the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine, has been helping cyclists<br />

ride better for more than 30 years and literally wrote the book on cycling<br />

and medicine, Andy Pruitt’s Complete Medical Guide for Cyclists. Dr. Pruitt<br />

has broken <strong>BG</strong> F.I.T.’s Biomechanical Integration into a few basic principles.<br />

PRINCIPLE 1: Biomechanical Integration Is a Marriage Between Bicycle and Body.<br />

“I MET EGGER IN A BIKE SHOP when I was doing a sales pitch. He was a mechanic and was<br />

bold enough to tell me that the stuff that I was selling was no good,” says <strong>Specialized</strong>’s Founder<br />

and President Mike Sinyard. “He said he could easily do it better, so we brought him on and with<br />

the first project, he completely blew us away, and he has continued to impress us ever since.”<br />

To say Egger has been working at <strong>Specialized</strong> for a long time is a severe understatement—there are<br />

full-grown redwood forests near the office that he planted when he first started. Ask him what motivates<br />

him to such lofty levels of dedication, and he’ll quickly tell you that he and his team are driven by the<br />

freedom to make truly differentiated designs. “Something I always say is that a bike needs to look fast,<br />

even when it’s just sitting there,” says Egger. “Every design should instill confidence: Our work should<br />

help people ride better, or faster, or just more often, and in every case, our work should make you look<br />

great when you’re riding a bicycle.”<br />

“Robert can design bikes, equipment and just about every other kind of thing way beyond what most<br />

people could ever dream of. We’ve been working together for almost 20 years and he still surprises<br />

us all,” says Sinyard. “Not to mention the fact that he can still win the sprint on the lunch ride using<br />

a single-speed mountain bike.”<br />

No question that Egger is unabashedly competitive; he also admits to being somewhat stubborn.<br />

“I want everything to look beautiful”, he says. “That’s a challenge when we’re chasing goals like light<br />

and stiff,” Egger says with some visible contemplation. “But our team here is so awesome—we always<br />

figure out a way to remember the aesthetics. We really<br />

<strong>Specialized</strong> has produced during Robert’s tenure with the company. And paradoxically to some, this<br />

wealth of experience is exactly what drives him to constantly seek new innovations. “As a designer,<br />

you have to keep looking forward and reinventing yourself. As soon as you feel comfortable, that’s the<br />

beginning of the end,” says Egger. “You have to be willing to throw out what you know and start over<br />

all the time. That’s how we stay current.”

Body Geometry saddles are available in multiple widths, so there is one that will fit you perfectly.<br />

Traditionally, saddle width has been determined by educated guesses based on experience, opinion and<br />

a little pseudoscience: If a design worked for a saddle maker or his circle of friends, it was judged good.<br />

After exhaustive scientific research, we found that the most effective way to ensure<br />

comfort was to make saddles that, like shorts, shoes, gloves, helmets and just about<br />

anything else that contacts your body, are available in different sizes. Investigation<br />

showed us that few people, even those with identical waist sizes and weights,<br />

have the same distance between their sit bones. So narrow saddles aren’t<br />

necessarily the best for smaller people and wider saddles don’t always work for<br />

bigger riders. Complicating matters even more is the fact that the relative position<br />

a rider assumes on a bike affects the distance between his or her sit bones;<br />

the more aggressive the position, the closer the sit bones taper together. To help<br />

any rider custom-fit his or her saddle, we’ve created the Body Geometry<br />

DON’T LET THE PONYTAIL and all-American smile fool you. Sondra Williamson is a onewoman<br />

wrecking crew. An expert-level Downhill, Dual Slalom and 4X racer, Williamson has been<br />

known to drop trails that 98% of everyone else with a bike is deathly afraid of. Whenever she can<br />

shake free from her job in USA Marketing long enough for a road trip, she pushes her limits in<br />

NORBA National gravity events and on trails like Whistler’s Clown Shoes and Southern California’s<br />

Tunnel Trail. “The 2006 NORBA at Sugar Mountain in North Carolina definitely tested my limits,”<br />

says Williamson. “It was a mess of slippery, muddy rocks and twisted roots—it brought home the<br />

reality of the skill it takes to race at the absolute highest level.”<br />

But that’s not the whole story with Williamson—she shreds a whole lot more than just bikes. A former<br />

striker for UC Santa Barbara’s soccer squad, she rides motocross, snowboards, runs marathons and has<br />

even raced stock cars. “My cousins were really into auto racing and I figured why not give it a shot?”<br />

says the 27-year-old of her foray into four-wheel flying.<br />

A native of Carpinteria, California, where she picked up a love for all things outdoors, Williamson came<br />

to <strong>Specialized</strong> in 2005 and spends her days working on marketing and communications programs with<br />

<strong>Specialized</strong>’s independent bicycle dealer partners around the United States. “When you’re young you<br />

learn about the stereotype of the typical 9-to-5 office<br />

job and hope that you never find yourself down that<br />

To him, that means a tire that’s light and has low rolling resistance,<br />

a supple ride and outstanding puncture resistance. So we developed<br />

a unique construction for our S-Works Fast Trak SLK and S-Works<br />

Fast Trak LK.<br />

We start with our light, high-performance 127-tpi tube-type casing<br />

and combine it with a tubeless-ready Kevlar bead, race-proven<br />

MONDO<br />

The Mondo road tire was carefully engineered to be<br />

the fastest race clincher in the world, with a unique<br />

dual density rubber compound, extremely low rolling<br />

start with the Fast Trak 2.0+ and clip the center knobs for<br />

lower rolling resistance, shorten the side knobs for a more<br />

secure bite, reduce the weight and make it sealant-friendly.<br />

We gave them the S-Works Fast Trak SLK (Super Low Knob)<br />

1.9 with a 50% reduction in knob height and a 127 tpi casing<br />
