Chelsea Chowning became the first women’s <strong>basketball</strong><br />

player in school history to earn Academic All-<br />

America honors when she was named to the 2008<br />

ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third<br />

team as selected by the College Sports Information<br />

Directors <strong>of</strong> America (CoSIDA).<br />

2008—With <strong>Kentucky</strong>’s impressive comefrom-behind<br />

victory over No. 17/14 Georgia in<br />

Athens, Ga., on Jan. 31 the Wildcats charted<br />

Coach Matthew Mitchell earned his first<br />

win as the head coach at <strong>Kentucky</strong> when<br />

the Wildcats defeated USC-Upstate in the<br />

season opener, 74-59, on Nov. 10, 2007.<br />

their first win over the Lady Dawgs since 2005,<br />

their first win in Athens since 1994 and their<br />

first win over a ranked SEC opponent on the<br />

road since 1986. It also marked UK’s first win<br />

over any ranked opponent on the road since 1997.<br />

2008— <strong>Kentucky</strong> charted eight wins during<br />

regular-season Southeastern Conference play,<br />

marking the second-most league wins in school<br />

history. In his first season as head coach <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Wildcats, Matthew Mitchell’s eight SEC wins<br />

were the most conference wins by a first-year<br />

head coach in UK Hoops history.<br />

2008— A school-record five Wildcats earned<br />

postseason SEC honors. Samantha Mahoney and<br />

Sarah Elliott were named to the second team, Victoria<br />

Dunlap and Amber Smith were selected to<br />

the All-Freshman Team and Chelsea Chowning<br />

was named the SEC Scholar Athlete <strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />

Elliott and Mahoney also were named honorable<br />

mention All-SEC by The Associated Press.<br />

2008—The Wildcats participated in a schoolrecord<br />

fourth consecutive postseason tournament<br />

with a quartrfinals finish in the postseason<br />

WNIT. UK received a first-round bye and<br />

defeated Middle Tennessee and James Madison<br />

in Memorial Coliseum before narrowly falling to<br />

eventual champion Marquette in the quarterfinals<br />

in Lexington.<br />

2008—Seniors Sarah Elliott and Samantha<br />

Mahoney played in 132 career game, breaking<br />

the school record <strong>of</strong> 129 games set by Jennifer<br />

Humphrey from 2003-07.<br />

2008—Senior center Sarah Elliott became<br />

UK’s all-time leading blocker. She holds the<br />

school record for blocks in a game (6), season<br />

(56), and career (195).<br />

2008—UK ranked in the nation’s top 25 and<br />

the SEC’s top four in average attendance for the<br />

fifth consecutive season. The Cats were 23rd<br />

nationally and fourth in the SEC, averaging 4,765<br />

fans per game.<br />

2008— <strong>Kentucky</strong> saw a season-high attendance<br />

<strong>of</strong> 8,335 vs. No. 9 LSU in Rupp Arena on<br />

Jan. 27. It marked the fifth-largest crowd to see a<br />

women’s game in Rupp Arena and was the seventh-largest<br />

crowd overall at UK.<br />

2008—Matthew Mitchell hired new assistant<br />

coaches Kyra Elzy and Matt Insell to replace<br />

Niya Butts (now the head coach at Arizona) and<br />

Vonn Read.<br />

Seniors Chanté Bowman, Sarah Elliott, and Samantha Mahoney<br />

will forever leave a mark on the program as they helped UK<br />

appear in four straight postseason tournaments and ink several<br />

“firsts” in UK Hoops history in their four-year career.<br />
