I enjoyed the recent experience of being able to Skype in from Canada
for the production wrap up of what was a great season of Kiss
Me Kate. Congratulations to all involved.
Planning is now well underway for 2012 and students selecting VCE
programs should have submitted their courses. Course selection for
years 9 & 10 will be finalized in the next few weeks too. It is most
important that any student who is not returning next year lets a
coordinator know before the end of this term.
Congratulations are extended to Luke Percy on his selection for
Australia in the schools world cross-country championships in Italy
(2012). This is indeed an outstanding achievement.
Looking forward to Gala Concert in a few weeks time and the final
opportunity to thank all of our year 12 music students.
There are some interesting challenges in education at the moment.
Along with other secondary schools, Ringwood is grappling with
the impact of funding cuts for our VCAL program. There is also a
lot of discussion about the federal government funding review for
education. For those that are interested the latest information in
the form of a communiqué can be found at:
http://www.deewr.gov.au/Schooling/ReviewofFunding/Documents/ReviewFundingSchooling.pdf
value and reciprocate every year.
Please contact Mrs R Devereux or Mrs J Ward if you are able to assist.
VCE – “ACE YOUR EXAMS”
Year 12 students listened to James Righetti from Elevate as he guided
students to the best strategies and tactics in these final weeks
prior to examinations next term.
MIDDLE SCHOOL AWARD CEREMONY
The Middle School award ceremony was conducted on Wednesday
10 August. Congratulations to all students who received an
academic award-it’s well deserved! These students are outstanding
role models, strive for excellence and play a significant role in setting
the highly positive that characterises our college. It was also
exciting to see a significant increase in student numbers. Many
thanks to families for supporting this exciting event.
CANTEEN SHELTER- YEAR 7/8 WALKATHON!
A reminder of the upcoming College Walkathon on Period 4, Friday
September 9. Who will win the form competition and enjoy a half
day excursion and how many students are going to win prizes? It
should be lots of fun! An important reminder that students will not
be allowed to participate unless the indemnity form is returned.
All money raised will go towards the canteen shelter which will be
a long term asset for the school community. Finally, the college is
running a competition to name the canteen shelter. If you have any
ideas please see Mr Salisbury.
OUT OF UNIFORM DAY - FRIDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER
All students are reminded of the ‘Out of Uniform Day’ next Friday
9th September to raise money for our new canteen structure. Please
bring a minimum of $3 donation
SCHOOLS’ GARDEN AWARDS
Last year Ringwood was successful in winning the annual Turf
Award as part of the Schools Garden Award, totalling $4000 worth
of summer turf. Our plan is to beautify the grass area adjacent to
the Administration building containing the murals and sculpture. It
will make for a beautiful passive student area and works will hopefully
commence early November.
YEAR 10 ATTENDANCE-FORM ASSEMBLY
Too many Year 10 students have been missing or arriving late for
form assemblies. This is an important time of the day when rolls are
marked and vital information disseminated.
O H & S
This week the college had a full O H & S audit. Overall, the message
was positive and the auditors were pleased with the culture of safety
at Ringwood Secondary College. Many thanks to Mr Hillier for his
work in this area in making the school a safer place for everyone.
From Mrs Hughes ...
PSW - SCHOOL UNIFORM SUPPLIERS
Mr C. Salisbury
Assistant Principal
We have recently received advice from PSW that there will be a price
increase of about 5% for all uniforms from 1 October 2011. Prices
have remained constant for the last two years but due to escalating
costs and changes in the exchange rate, they are no longer able to
maintain current prices. If you are considering making a purchase
in the near future you may like to do so before the price rise.
The Year Levels...
GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR IPAD OUTSIDE YOUR
CLASSES
Up to date on all your set homework? Why not try some of these
ideas and let your iPad extend your learning at home.
Recap and Revise:
- Create a quiz or a series of flash cards for yourself as you complete
topics or units. Then, before a test or common test, complete
your quiz to assist you in revising concepts ad identifying areas that
might need more work. You could use Mental Class Classroom Edition
or gFlash+.
- Create your own podcasts to revise important concepts in each
subject, using Caster Lite, QuickVoice or iTalk. Listen to them anywhere,
anytime. You could also subscribe to podcasts or download
relevant podcasts from the iTunes store in both iTunes and iTunes
U.
- Create your own screen recording using ScreenChomp or ShowMe
where you explain a concept, skill or idea. It doesn’t even have to be
about something you are learning in class – share a personal skill,
hobby or interest area. You could then share your recording with
others including your teacher or Ms Rafferty and Miss Gill.
- Evaluate an app that you currently use, or find a new app that you
think would be great for learning. Email your review and ideas for
classroom educational use to Ms Rafferty and Miss Gill -
cr@ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au and egill@ringwoodsc.vic.edu.au .
Gayle Turcato
- Create your own movies to assist with revision of subject materials
using Reel Director, Puppet Pals, Sock Puppets or Sonic Pics Lite.
- Create a song to help you remember and revise material, using
Songify or QuickVoice to record and listen to your songs.
- Create your own concept maps to brainstorm, collaborate or
organise ideas, using Idea Sketch, Corkulous, Mind Mash or Bamboo
Paper.
- Research events mentioned in class or explore current and past
topics further using online newspapers or searches.
- Organise your SmartNote books and ensure your classwork is up
to date.
Extend your knowledge of the world around us:
- Subscribe to rss feeds of the news and read the paper online. From
iTunes, you can download free rss readers to sort and read content
from papers, magazines, blogs and other websites.
- Visit and explore virtual libraries, art galleries and museums and
locate a few useful library related blogs and/or news feeds.
- Use photo apps like Guardian Eyewitness, Fotopedia or Rough
Guides World Lens to learn about what is going on in the world
through rich photography.
- Practice your writing skills by writing stories, blogging or creating
comics. Write a choose-your-own-adventure story using Corkulous,
create a picture audio story using Storykit, make a puppet show
using Photo Puppet or Puppet Pals, or write a series of postcards
using Photocard. You could plan your ideas using StoryBoards, and
if you are stuck for ideas, try using Rory’s Story Cubes or Prompts to
help you with a story starter.
- Read a book on your iPad using iBooks, Kindle and other free apps
where free e books can be downloaded.
Youth Voice – Young People Having a Say
About Their Local Community.
On Friday August 26th, thirteen students from Years 7, 9, 10, 11 and
12 participated in a lunchtime workshop facilitated by the Department
of Community Relations and Planning. The students worked
in cross-age groups to express their views on the current Ringwood
station complex as well as to give ideas for future development.
The facilitators commended the students for their mature approach
and genuine input, stating that their responses were very similar
to those of the broader community. The collated feedback gained
from the students is extremely valuable and will be presented at
the next community meeting on August 30th at Maroondah
Council offices. Today’s workshop demonstrated that young people
have a lot to offer and enjoy being involved in authentic tasks that
have real outcomes within their local community. Many thanks to
the following students for their positive input and enthusiasm during
the session – well done!!
Careers
This week’s highlight is the launch of a Careers Bulletin aimed for
Years 7-9. Created by Year 11 VCAL student, Jules North-Coombes,
this bulletin will be emailed to students several times a term.
It is very important for students to think about their career direction
from an early age and carefully plan their subjects accordingly.
Students from any year level can visit the Careers room and seek
assistance or utilise the resources (2 new IMAC’s!).
YEAR 12- COMPULSORY INTERVIEWS
During the next four weeks our Year 12 students will complete
their compulsory exit destination interviews. For the majority of
students, tertiary study is their anticipated destination, although a
good number of students are looking at apprenticeships and traineeships.
Students looking at options other than tertiary study in
2012 will attend a special session to provide them with details on
Page 4

Literacy and Numeracy Week 2011
Monday 29th August – Friday 2nd September is Literacy and Numeracy
Week. During the week, there will be a number of in-class
activities and competitions running to engage students in Numeracy
and develop their Literacy skills. Posters addressing the question
‘When will I ever need Maths?’ in a range of curriculum areas will be
displayed around the school highlighting instances where students
will use the skills they develop in Maths in other curriculum areas.
She particularly asked that
the students singing teacher
(Alex Boemo) be commended
for the high level of performance the choir gave.
On behalf of all the choir members our thanks and appreciation
goes to Alex whose continued efforts and understanding of these
students makes being part of this choir so enjoyable for them.
The students had the most amazing experience and were able to
look around the stately rooms at Government House and the
gardens where many of the photos were taken and will be able to
be viewed on the screens around the school shortly.
YEAR LEVEL ‘NUMERACY’ COMPETITIONS:
Year 7 students have the opportunity to enter a ‘Numeracy Digital
Story’ competition where they can use any app. they wish on their
iPads.
Many thanks also to Lynda Cody and John Raseta for their
assistance on the day.
Sustainability Project
Aruma Choir Excursion to Government
House
On Wednesday 24th there was a reception at Government House
for all the International Students currently studying in Victorian
Schools.
Two of our International students - Naomi Truong and Connor Kim
attended along with the choir who performed I am, You Are, We Are
Australian.
The Lt Governor General Marilyn Warren was glowing in her praise
for the choir’s performance
and how appropriate and
moving the song was and
how wonderful they looked
in the cultural
costumes.
It has been an exciting two weeks which has seen students embark
upon an understanding
of how to sustain the planet’s
resources.Speakers from outside
the college have helped
set the mood.
Mr Rob Motton, inspired
students to think about the
decisions we make about
our resources based on our
values. He emphasised to the
students that as the future
generation who will take its
part in society, students must
learn from the mistakes of
the older generation and become
informed about making
improvements to the way
we live. Further to this, the
management of Knox Shopping
Centre, lead by Mrs Alison
Marie, informed students
of the centre’s sustainable
practices and its future plans
to reduce waste and preserve resources. Students were treated to
a trivia quiz with prizes and an information pack while the centre
donated an ornamental pear tree and a plaque to commemorate
the beginning of our combined efforts on sustainability. The multimedia
competition which has a theme of Think locally, Act globally
is kindly sponsered by Knox Shopping centre. Our thanks and appreciation
go to all our presenters for the time, commitment and
passion they have shown in supporting our project.
Students have been making
recycled paper in Science,
discussed whether Melbournians
should drink recycled
sewage water and written a
Letter to the Editor in English,
began their design of their 3D
model of a sustainable dwelling
in Visual Communication.
The photos in this newsletter
will show a range of activities
while further learning of sustainable practices will be published in
the next newsletter.
FRENCH FASHION PARADE- MODELS WALKING DOWN THE CAT-
WALK
It has been great fun watching Year 8 describe their fellow models
in 12 French sentences that they have written, building up their descriptions
with the use of verbs and adjectives.
Some students dressed up, others were content to wear their school
uniform and learnt that une cravate is a tie while un short is shorts.
SENIOR STRINGS.
Our visitors left on the 7th August returning to Bitche in France after
a 4 week stay with Ringwood Secondary School families.
A special thank you to all host families for taking care of the girls
over this time and giving them a wonderful experience of this
country.
Ms Hobbs was delighted to
be able to show the students
the use of the iPad which we
have implemented this year
for use in class. The school
expresses its gratitude to Ms.
Hobbs for including the girls
in her French classes where
they were able to share their
knowledge with our students.
With the Melbourne strings and bands festival just completed the
senior strings conducted by Mr Lam was selected to perform at the
Gala Finale Concert on Saturday 27 August at Monash University.
Over the years we’ve had stage bands and a concert band invited to
play at this concert but this is the first time ever that Ringwood has
had a string ensemble invited to perform in 25 years. This ensemble
was awarded a Gold shield for their performance.
Performing Arts
KISS ME, KATE
And so the production has gone back into the box.
I have never been so delighted for any team with which I have
worked. I will confess to coming very close to shedding a little tear
upon our final night – not out of any overinflated sense of pride,
but purely from an overwhelming sense of how much so many
great kids had achieved. Hang on, that’s pride. Oh well, so be it.
You’d have to be a hard-hearted man not to be proud of such a
thing.
We are so very lucky at this school that we have the opportunity to
come together in such a way. We create a community of students,
teachers and parents that transcends the minutiae of daily struggle.
We work in a constructive and purposeful manner to achieve a
common goal. And we do it well.
To everyone who was interested and involved, and to everyone
who bought a ticket and saw the show – thank you.
The Sports Pages
REGION SPORT
August has seen yet another very busy RSC sports calendar with
12 teams competing at Region level.
NETBALL
The year 8 girls netball team progressed to the semi finals of Region
netball. They were beaten by Vermont Secondary, who went
on to compete in the final. Unfortunately they were hit with injuries
and sickness on the day and only had 7 girls well enough to be
on court, with some injured players forced to return to the court. A
great effort by all girls.
SOCCER
Inter girls soccer won 2 out of their 3 pool games and were unlucky
to not make the final after playing well all day.
Year 7 girls soccer had a good day out on the pitch, winning all
their pool games and progressing to the final. In a hard fought
contest they ended up losing to Kew, but were rewarded for their
efforts by attaining an EMR runners up pennant.
BASKETBALL
The A girls were undefeated until they met Box Hill Senior in their
final game. Despite Yvette Thompson being out for the whole second
half due to a knee injury, the girls really took it to the ‘elite’ girls
and lost by 4 points. Standout performers were year 12 basketball
veterans Jody Hedin and Jess Akaruru.
The B girls also made it through to the final, which they lost narrowly
after putting up a valiant fight.
The boys team met Mooroolbark in their first round match and
narrowly lost. They then bounced back to record a comfortable
win against Vermont. In their final pool game they lost to Box Hill
Senior who went on to win the day. Solid effort by the boys, despite
having most of their more senior players out due to SACs and
injury.
AUSTRALIAN ALL SCHOOLS CROSS COUNTRY
On the weekend of the 20th of August Luke Percy of Year 10 competed
in the Australian All Schools Cross Country championships in
Canberra. In a remarkable effort he finished 9th in Australia in the
combined 16 and 17 year age groups. Within the 16 year age group
Luke placed 5th which resulted in him being selected to represent
Australia in the ISF World Schools Cross Country Championships in
La Valetta, Malta in 2012. Congratulations Luke, a fantastic effort.
First Aid
Something we see a lot of in first aid is a rolled or sprained ankle
so we thought we would give you the basics in care. If a sprained
ankle doesn’t receive the right care initially, it can result in a chronic
problem so initial treatment is very important to help prevent this.
Initial treatment for all sprains is R.I.C.E – Rest, Ice, Compression and
Elevation.
Rest – Rest the injured ankle and avoid movement or activity that
makes it worse or causes any further pain. Crutches will probably be
necessary especially in the first few days after the injury.
Ice – Ice as soon as possible for 15 minutes every 4 – 6 hours for as
long as the ankle remains swollen. This helps with the pain and also
with the recovery.
Compression – Wrap the swollen ankle with an elastic bandage,
starting at the toes and ending about 4 inches above the ankle.
Wrap tightly enough to give good compression but not too tightly
that the wrapping causes more pain or cuts off circulation to the
toes. It is important to check the color and warmth of the toes regularly
to ensure that circulation is adequate.
Elevation – Elevate the injured ankle as much as possible as this
helps to drain some of the swelling.
It may be necessary to take some oral pain relief such as panadol
or nurofen but it is always important to consider seeking medical
advice to assess the damage
In 2011 the MEC is continuing to work collaboratively
to improve the educational outcomes for all coalition
students. The following schools form the Maroondah
Education Coalition (MEC): Croydon SC, Croydon
Community School, Heathmont College, Maroondah
SC, Norwood SC, Parkwood SC and Ringwood SC.
Term 3 Activities
MEC ‘Becoming Asia Literate’ Project
Year 8 Asian Enrichment day:
On September 2 nd , Year 8 students who study
Indonesian or Japanese will participate in an all day
event that is interactive and learning focused. The day
will see students participating in traditional dance,
music and sport, an Asian poster competition and quiz,
and a ‘Panel - Question & Answer’ session, during
which past students will answer questions about the past
and future benefits of studying an Asian language.
MEC Global & Multicultural Citizenship:
Model UN Conference – August 18 th
The Model UN Conference – ‘An eye for an eye, the
debate on the death penalty’, was a fantastic learning
experience for students, enabling them to develop a
national and global perspective of an extremely
important and topical issue. The knowledge gained
from each country’s speakers also assisted students to
gain a greater understanding of the laws of foreign
countries in relation to the death penalty and to further
develop empathy for people from different cultural
backgrounds. The staff from DEECD and MEC
schools were impressed by the way the students learnt
from each other during the course of the day,
improving their ability to stay within their designated
country’s point of view.
Students also had an
opportunity to enhance their
team and negotiation skills
through participation in
caucus sessions.

MEC Artists in Schools Project
During Book Week, August 22 nd to 26 th , the students’ BIG
BOOK of 13 pages was exhibited at Eastland. After
viewing the artwork, Maroondah City Council would like to
take digital copies for display during future Citizenship
ceremonies at Karralyka Theatre. This is a testament to the
contribution that young people can make towards enhancing
intercultural understanding in their local community.
MEC Senior School Provision Group Events
Unit 4 Psychology Lecture:
On August 16 th at Maroondah SC Theatre, Dr Michael
Carr-Gregg presented a session on depression as part of
the Unit 4 Psychology course work. His presentation
was not only relevant to students’ VCE work, but also
to the wider audience, as it highlighted the warning
signs of depression and the importance of early
treatment. Participants were also given a ‘Beyond Blue’
information pack at the end of the session. The Senior
School Group would like to thank Mark Fuller for
organising this event.
Elevate Education – ‘Ace Your Exams’ sessions:
From August 23 rd – 26 th , Elevate ‘Ace Your Exams’
sessions were delivered at individual MEC schools to
give students an extra ‘boost’ with exam and study
tips/strategies well before final exams begin.
Year 12 Exam Revision Sessions:
October revision sessions, presented by MEC teachers,
are currently being organised for Unit 3/4 exams. A
wide range of subject revision sessions is normally
offered to senior students from our MEC schools. All
Year 12 teachers will be encouraging their students to
attend these sessions that will operate during the next
school holidays or after school in early Term 4.
Maroondah Council Remembrance Day Event:
Three Year 11 students are part of the team who are
planning a Remembrance Day event at Ringwood Lake on
November 11 th . The students will be involved in regular
evening meetings at the Ringwood Council Chambers,
providing the planning group with ideas, as well as assisting
on the day. Thank you to the following students for their
active participation within their local community.
