(4) By combining a noun <strong>and</strong> a verb ; the verb follwing the noun :<br />

(5) By combining a verb <strong>and</strong> a noun ; the verb preceding <strong>and</strong> acting on the noun :<br />

skq fa wash + clothes washerman<br />

nU c[q see + elephant elephant-keeper<br />

kinq mE[q eat + country ruler, governor<br />

kinq bnq eat + village village headman<br />

(6) By combining one verb <strong>and</strong> two nouns, one noun preceding <strong>and</strong> the other<br />

following the verb. The first noun acts as the subject <strong>and</strong> the second as the object.<br />

For instance : the compound noun fU kinq mE[q meaning fU 'person' kinq 'eat V' mE[q 'kingdom', i.e.<br />

'the person who eats (i.e. rules) the kingdom'. The term refers either to a king, governor, or<br />

viceroy or such other <strong>of</strong>ficials.<br />

Other examples are :<br />

fU pj mE[q person + go + country traveller<br />

fU epa ko[q person + beat + drum drummer<br />

fU po] ruinq person + guard + house house guard<br />

n[q nU xi[q female + see + body female attendant<br />

fU ttq N; person + cut + grass grass cutter<br />

fU rpq tj person + carry + dead body carrier <strong>of</strong> dead body<br />

Note : There is not much difference between type (5) <strong>and</strong> type (6). Compound nouns in type<br />

(6) are more specific <strong>and</strong> easily understood.<br />

(7) By combining a noun <strong>and</strong> an adjective, the adjective following the noun :<br />

to[q di[q metal + red copper<br />

to[q lE[q metal + yellow brass<br />

to[q xio[q metal + hard bell metal<br />

dinq dM soil + black coal
