On the basis <strong>of</strong> formation, nouns in <strong>Ahom</strong> language may be grouped into two classes :<br />

single-word noun<br />

multi-word noun<br />

A/ Single-word nounsare formed by one word only :<br />

nM water t; eye<br />

tnq tree lnq gr<strong>and</strong>-child<br />

na field tI place<br />

bnq village doj hill<br />

B/ Compound nouns are formed by the combination <strong>of</strong> two or more words. For instance :<br />

tI fj fire-place nM t; tears<br />

bnq Aokq east funq tukq rain<br />

Compound nouns are formed in several ways :<br />

(1) By suffixing words meaning 'male' or 'female' to class names <strong>of</strong> living beings :<br />

luukq cj issue, child + male son<br />

fU Ni[q person + female woman<br />

xoj vuikq buffalo + male male buffalo<br />

(2) By combining two unrelated sngle-word nouns in a sense <strong>of</strong> some relationship or<br />

in a possessive form, the possessor following the thing possessed :<br />

sui[q c[q stable + elephant elephant stable<br />

rM] riunq edge + house edge <strong>of</strong> house<br />

cw yI master + store store-keeper<br />

tI fj place + fire hearth<br />

nM t; water + eye tears<br />

(3) By combining two single-word nouns having some sort <strong>of</strong> relation between them<br />

or identical meaning :<br />

mE[q bnq country + village country
