An Edition Of The United Methodist Reporter
In Matthew, the angel of God
tells Joseph in a dream that
Joseph’s son is to be named Jesus,
the Greek form (the New
Testament is in Greek) of the name
Joshua, which means “I am
salvation.” To Joseph, the angel
even explains why: “because he
will save his people from their
sins.” Mary receives the same
command from the angel Gabriel.
Apparently, the name was an
important part of this
incredible miracle.
But in Matthew, the conversation
is complicated even more, because
the very next verse, the text says What’s In A
“All this took place to fulfill what
had been spoken by the Lord Name?
through the prophet: “Look, the
virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”
So which is it? Maybe Emmanuel was to be a middle name? “Jesus
Emmanuel, son of Joseph?”
It becomes even more complicated when we add in the Old Testament
prophecies, which most of us know from Handel’s Messiah: “For a child
has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his
shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”… Isaiah 9:6
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as “the Son of
God” and “the Son of Man.” And most often we use the title, “Christ,”
as a sort of last name. Christ literally means, in Greek, “the anointed
one,” and was used of Kings and Princes to denote they had been
chosen by God to rule.
Perhaps this is all so confusing because the God who came to live
among us as a man, who chose to give himself away in life and death
out of love for you and me, cannot be contained by a single name.
How much we want to put God in a box, to summarize the Son of God
with a single concept so we can understand him completely. We can
never completely understand God; all we can do is experience the
touch of the Almighty.
So in this season, when we think of that tiny baby in a manger, I
prefer to stick with the command of the angel. I will call him “Jesus,”
because he is my savior.
The series Practice Makes Perfect introduces
training teams and the concept of a rule of life
which people follow together in order to live as
disciples. When people are ready to take that step
from belonger to disciple, they need the tools and
the accountability to take that step. Paul tells
Timothy, ‘Train yourself in godliness.” (1 Timothy
4:7) There is a difference between trying
and training.
L.I.F.T
Are you looking for a safe place to be real about
your faith journey? Do you long to deepen your
relationship with Christ by deepening your
relationship with a few other faith seekers? Are you
feeling called to be a “doer of the Word, not merely
a hearer” (James 1:22)? Then a LIFT team may be
the place for you.
LIFT stands for Living in Faith Together, where
trust, laughter, scripture and support coexist. Each
Living in Faith Together Team is made up of four to
12 people who devote one hour a week together,
working on living like Christ out in the world, in
your day-to-day real life. In your time together you
will discuss a topic related to the current sermon
series, considering how to actually practice in your
life what’s being preached on Sundays. You’ll have a
lesson that guides the group and offers practical
tools and exercises, and you’ll check in with each
other and pray for one another. In your time apart,
although there is no actual “homework” or preparation
required for each week, you will work to incorporate
some of the practices into your real life.
St. Luke’s will be starting new groups in January.
Bishop William
Willimon Returns
On January 8, the Gethsemane Campus will
host Bishop William Willimon as the guest
preacher for the 10:55 a.m. worship service.
Bishop Willimon is widely pursued as a speaker
and lecturer, and is known for a humorous
and engaging style of preaching. When he
came to St. Luke’s for the Shamblin Lecture
Series, Dr. Tom Pace said, “Bishop Willimon is
among my favorite preachers and leaders.
He challenges leaders and rank and file in
the church to put behind us the sleepy
institution, and become a community of
people seeking to live a life that looks
more like Jesus and less like the world
around us. Bishop Willimon is the
United Methodist resident bishop of
North Alabama. Prior to becoming
a bishop, he served as the Dean of
Duke Chapel and as a professor
at Duke Divinity School. Bishop
Willimon is the author of
numerous articles and books,
and also has a blog (http://
willimon.blogspot.com)
and a regular podcast.
This weekend we will be
celebrating, “The Mass of
the Incarnation of God in
Jesus Christ”…well that’s
what the church used to
call it. It was shortened to
Christ Mass and then became
known as Christmas. This
time of year I always like to
talk about how we came to
celebrate this Christ Mass.
Chi (x) and rho (r) placed
next to one another were a
common abbreviation used
by early Christians to represent the first two letters of the
word Christ as it is written in Greek. Likewise the X was
used as a common abbreviation for the word Christ. Then
we come to the “-mas” part. Christ Mass is supposed to be
the Mass (or worship service) for the Anointed One. Mass,
of course, is what we used to call (and some still do) a
service where Eucharist (Communion) is offered. Therefore
the term mass always speaks about the receiving of Christ.
During Advent we have prepared ourselves to
receive Christ both in the telling of the story leading up
to his coming as a child, but also in the reminder of what
it means to prepare for his second coming. Now comes
the day for the Christ Mass (Christmas) and then comes
Christmastide (the 12 days of Christmas where we
celebrate his coming into the world as King and celebrate
the promise of his coming again).
Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive
her King...We are joyfully reminded that God does
not give gifts as the world gives...he gives us so
much more in Christ Jesus, he gives us himself.
Blessings,
Christ’s Mass
socioeconomic classes.
2011 Christmas
Offering
St. Luke’s recognizes the importance of our church
walking with children and youth. That is why this
year’s Christmas offering is supporting programs
for young people, both in our community and in
our world.
Through 10 years of association with Methodist
ministries in Kenya, St. Luke’s missioners have
seen firsthand the miracles performed by the Zoe
Ministry. Its Hope Companions Empowerment
Project unites orphans and child-led families
into strong, mutually supportive communities.
Through mentoring, vocational training, incomegenerating
activities, and HIV/AIDS education,
children are empowered to live free from the
cycle of poverty and dependency. St. Luke’s gift
of $50,000 can provide essential life skills for as
many as 240 orphans in this project.
Youth Advocates is a non profit organization that
goes to the streets, meeting young people in their
own environments. Caseworkers then build solid
relationships with these youth and use those
relationships as the springboard for larger life
changes. St. Luke’s members enjoy performances
by Youth Advocates Break Dancing group, which
meets at both St. Luke’s campuses. Church volunteers
serve as role models while visiting with
the group and preparing a meal for them. The
Christmas offering will be used to provide this
organization with a van to provide transportation
to sporting events and other functions.
Envelopes for Christmas offering donations are
available in the pews or church office. Donations
can be made in honor/memory of a loved one.
