Be government-issued (e.g., driver’s license, state-issued identification card
Have a name that exactly matches the name used to register for the exam
(including designations such as “Jr.” and “III”).

You can also take an introductory lesson on the computer.
You do not need computer experience to use this system. You will use a computer
mouse to select answers. There is no way you can damage your test by accidentally
touching a wrong key.
The theory exam content outlines beginning on Page 11 of this bulletin are the basis
for the exams. Questions on the exam are in a multiple-choice format with one
correct answer and three incorrect responses.
BARBER AND MASTER BARBER EXAMINATION
Practical exam
overview
The practical exam consists of actual demonstrations. You will be given instructions
before beginning each service. You will then have a specified time to set up your
supplies and equipment before the timed service begins. The practical exam content
outline is shown in this bulletin on Page 12.
During the practical exam, you must follow all appropriate rules for client protection
to ensure the health, safety and welfare of the public. This includes personal
preparation and infection control, wet draping or chemical draping of your model
between each demonstration, wearing gloves for all chemical demonstrations, and
being in control of your supply kit at all times.
Supply kit
You are responsible for bringing your own supplies and equipment in sufficient
quantities (see the list on Page 13). All supplies and equipment must be in sanitary
condition and in proper working order. You may not borrow from another candidate
or from the exam site location. Your kit will be used during the exam as a dry
sanitizer.
Blood spill procedures
If a blood spill should occur, you must immediately stop the service and follow
Prometric’s blood spill procedure as outlined on Page 14. The procedure will also be
posted at the test site. If you do not stop the service immediately, you will
automatically fail that service. If you fail the blood spill service, you will have to
retake the entire practical exam. You are required to bring all first aid materials
needed to safely handle a blood spill.
Model and mannequin requirements
A model is required for the shave and haircut sections of the practical exam.
Make sure that your model reads and understands this portion of the bulletin.
Your model must be at least 16 years old. The model must not have any knowledge
regulated by the Board.
Your model’s face must be clean, have no makeup and be free of skin disease.
Your model must be dressed in neat, clean, professional attire. The model may not
participate in any way during your exam, such as talking to you or handing you
supplies. You are responsible for your model’s actions.
Your model must submit to a haircut that is even all over and conforms to the shape
of the head. Your model must understand that you will be required to cut at least
1/8 inch of hair from the model’s entire head. To demonstrate the shave, your
model must be unshaven and have sufficient and visible facial hair.
Your model will be required to agree to and sign the following certification:
I, the model, certify that:
1 I am at least 16 years of age.
2 I will neither discuss nor divulge the contents of the exam or the procedures
involved in the exam with anyone.
3 I will not assist the candidate in any way or speak to the candidate during the
exam.
4 I am neither a student, current licensee or past licensee as a barber, master
barber, cosmetologist, senior cosmetologist, nail technician or esthetician; nor
7 Rev 3

BARBER AND MASTER BARBER EXAMINATION
5 The candidate has fully explained the procedures to take place during the
practical exam.
6 I have reviewed the Candidate Information Bulletin concerning the procedures
to take place.
7 I agree to permit the candidate to perform the procedures outlined in the
Candidate Information Bulletin.
8 I will have a current, government-issued photo identification (e.g. driver’s
license) with me when I appear at the test site with the candidate.
If your model does not appear at the site on time, does not have the proper
identification, or if your model will not sign the Model Affidavit Form, you will be
required to reschedule your exam.
Mannequins may be used for the chemical demonstration. If you choose to use a
mannequin, you must supply your own mannequin and stand. Mannequin heads that
have been purchased pre-sectioned indicating the sections by various colors with
notches are not allowed.

Note After the exam, the testing facilities will not be available for clean up of
mannequins or models.
Test center
regulations
To ensure that all candidates are tested under equally favorable conditions, the
following regulations and procedures will be observed at each test center. Failure to
follow any of these security procedures may result in the disqualification of your
examination. Prometric reserves the right to audiotape and videotape any
examination session.
References

No reference materials, papers or study materials are allowed at the test
center. If you are found with these or any other aids, you will not be allowed
to continue the exam and your answers will not be scored.
inside out to confirm that you have no prohibited items. The test center
administrator will collect any materials that violate the rules.
Breaks
Visitors

If you leave the testing room while an exam is in progress, you must sign
out/in on the roster and you will lose exam time.
You are not allowed to use any electronic devices or phones during breaks.
No guests, visitors or family members are allowed at the test center.
the examination, you should answer the question to the best of your ability.
Your exam
results
Your score report will provide you with information regarding the next step in the
licensure process. Score reports are generated differently depending on whether you
are taking a computerized exam or a practical exam.
Theory exam. At the end of your exam, your score will be shown on the screen and
you will receive a printed score report. The report will indicate Pass or Fail and your
overall percentage. A score of 70 percent or above is required to pass.
Practical exam. To pass the practical exam, you must receive a score of
70 percent or above on the total exam. If you do not pass the blood spill task line,
you will automatically fail and you will need to retake the entire exam. Your score
report will detail if you fail as a result of not passing the blood spill line. Practical
exam results will be sent to you within 10 business days of the exam date.
Applying for a license. Once you have passed both your theory and your practical
exams, your results will be sent to the State of Maryland. Only the DLLR and the
Board may determine your eligibility for a license. For more information regarding
barber-related licensing requirements, please contact the Board at the address on
Page 1 or online at www.dllr.state.md.us/license/barbers.
Retake information. If you do not pass the exam, you must re-register, reschedule
and pay another full exam fee. Each time you retake an exam you will be
given a different form or version of the exam. You are strongly encouraged to study
prior to retaking an exam.
