ASCO Announces <strong>2012</strong> Recipients<br />

<strong>of</strong> Starter Grants for<br />

Educational Research<br />

The <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong>and</strong> Colleges <strong>of</strong> Optometry (ASCO) <strong>and</strong> The Vision Care Institute, LLC, an affiliate <strong>of</strong><br />

Johnson & Johnson Vision Care Inc., are pleased to announce the recipients <strong>of</strong> the <strong>2012</strong> Starter Grants for Educational<br />

Research. In this year’s program, five applicants were chosen to receive grants. The investigators for each project are:<br />

• Denise Goodwin, OD, FAAO, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, <strong>and</strong> Len Hua, OD, PhD, Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, both <strong>of</strong> Pacific<br />

• Adam Blacker, MS, OD, Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, Midwestern University - Arizona College <strong>of</strong> Optometry (Can Three<br />

Wrongs Make a Right?)<br />

Faculty members from the 21 ASCO member institutions are eligible to apply for grants under the program, which is<br />

dedicated to educational research.The grants support the concept <strong>of</strong> the Scholarship <strong>of</strong> Teaching <strong>and</strong> Learning (SoTL).<br />

Although all types <strong>of</strong> educational research projects are considered for a grant, priority is given to those that embrace<br />

SoTL. SoTL applies to all disciplines <strong>and</strong> levels <strong>of</strong> academia. It embraces teaching as a worthy subject for research with<br />

the goal <strong>of</strong> producing a public body <strong>of</strong> knowledge that is reviewed, developed <strong>and</strong> tested for the purposes <strong>of</strong> increasing the<br />

effectiveness <strong>of</strong> teaching <strong>and</strong> student learning.<br />

We congratulate this year’s grant recipients <strong>and</strong> look forward to the completion <strong>and</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> their projects.<br />

ASCO’s Jan<strong>of</strong>f Award to be Presented in 2013<br />

The Dr. Lester Jan<strong>of</strong>f Award for Writing Excellence recognizes the outst<strong>and</strong>ing writing <strong>of</strong> a research article published in<br />

Optometric Education, the journal <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Schools</strong> <strong>and</strong> Colleges <strong>of</strong> Optometry. The award, to be presented<br />

next in June 2013, is named in honor <strong>of</strong> the late Lester E. Jan<strong>of</strong>f, OD, MSEd, FAAO. Dr. Jan<strong>of</strong>f was editor <strong>of</strong> the journal<br />

from 2002 to 2005 <strong>and</strong> a longtime member <strong>of</strong> its editorial review board. He was known for his mentoring <strong>of</strong> young<br />

writers.<br />

A committee <strong>of</strong> the journal’s editorial review board selects the winner <strong>of</strong> the award. The judges rate all the research articles<br />

that appeared in the journal in the previous two years. Writing excellence is judged on significance <strong>of</strong> the topic chosen,<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> the article <strong>and</strong> potential impact. Authors <strong>of</strong> the winning paper receive a cash award.<br />

The first Dr. Lester Jan<strong>of</strong>f Award for Writing Excellence was presented to Barbara McGinley, MA, <strong>and</strong> Nancy B. Carlson,<br />

OD, FAAO, <strong>of</strong> the New Engl<strong>and</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Optometry, <strong>and</strong> Elizabeth Hoppe, OD, MPH, DrPH, <strong>of</strong> the Western<br />

University <strong>of</strong> Health Sciences College <strong>of</strong> Optometry, for their article “Instilling Ethics <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism in Today’s<br />

Optometry Students.” The paper appeared in the Winter 2007 issue <strong>of</strong> the journal.<br />

The 2010 award was presented to Aurora Denial, OD, FAAO, <strong>of</strong> the New Engl<strong>and</strong> College <strong>of</strong> Optometry, for her article<br />

“<strong>Association</strong> <strong>of</strong> Critical Thinking Skills With Clinical Performance in Fourth-Year Optometry Students.” The paper<br />

appeared in the <strong>Summer</strong> 2008 issue <strong>of</strong> the journal.<br />
