PL337 PL356 RURAL MINISTRY (CC) Those who minister in rural areas face unique pastoral concerns. This course is designed to help those who will minister in rural areas to understand the contemporary issues and plan for the future. Using a number of experts in the area of rural ministry as guest speakers, students will be able to study and discuss the unique aspects of rural ministry and to understand what characteristics define rural ministry. Cronin S GOD’S MISSION IN THE WORLD AND OUR PARTICIPATION "The pilgrim Church on earth is missionary by its very nature" (AG 2). Mission is not solely about going to another country, or another people. It is about living out our baptismal responsibility of sharing in the mission of Christ. In this course we will establish a strong theological foundation for a Catholic understanding of mission. We will look at the various paradigms of mission that have characterized mission praxis in their historical context. We will also examine the major Church documents on mission. With this background in mind we will consider questions of culture and mission praxis in parish life. Karecki W PL360 MARRIAGE, FAMILY, GRIEF, AND BEREAVEMENT: CULTURAL PERSPECTIVES (SPI) This course examines marriage, family, grief, bereavement, and other pastoral issues with a special emphasis on their cultural dimension. It is a Significant Pastoral Issues elective for students with international roots who will be ministering in the United States. (2nd and 3rd Year Only) Barnum W PL367 THE GOSPEL AND INTERCULTURAL RELATIONSHIPS The purpose of this course is to enable students to communicate the message of the Gospel in intercultural context in ways that are respectful of cultural diversity and faithful to critical theological principles and values gleaned from Church teaching. We also examine some important cultural values ie. immediacy, power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism vs. collectivism, etc. We consider this topic in the light of the New Evangelization and the information from the social sciences and relate it to ministry within and beyond the parish. Karecki S PL375 EVANGELIZATION AND CATECHESIS (SPI) This course begins with an examination of the directive documents for evangelization: Evangelii Nuntiandi (On Evangelization to the Modern World) by Pope Paul VI; Redemptoris Missio (On the permanent validity of the Church’s missionary mandate) by Pope John Paul II; and Go and Make Disciples from the USCCB. An examination of the directive documents for catechesis will focus on the USCCB documents National Directory for Catechesis and “In Support of Catechetical Ministry.” The focus for the course will be on the practical application at the parish level of the theories and directives of evangelization and catechesis. The course will also examine the theological, pastoral, psychological, and cultural issues to be considered when developing, delivering, and evaluating evangelization and catechetical programs and processes. PL379 MINISTRY TO MULTIPLE FAITH COMMUNITIES (SPI and CC) This course is designed to engage the students in the study of the phenomenon of ministry to multiple faith communities in the United States including ministry as the pastor of multiple parishes, pastor of one parish with multiple sites, and the pastor of one parish with multiple ethnic faith communities. The express purpose of the course is to provide students with foundational information and skills for pastoring in these complex circumstances. The sessions will focus on the current research from the field of multiple faith community ministry in the United States and the identification of effective pastoral strategies for shepherding multiple faith communities. This class is a Significant Pastoral Issues Elective.
