HI320 DIRECTED READINGS IN CHURCH HISTORY BEFORE 1700 This course is designed to allow a student to pursue a particular topic from Church history from the beginning of the Church through the seventeenth century. Topics may include the cultural, intellectual, socio-economic, and political history of Christian institutions or individuals in the early, patristic, medieval, or early modern periods. Through selected readings and discussion the student should become aware of the particular issues of the topic in relation to the larger frame work of the history of the Church. Hilliard W-S HI336 BEDE The course covers a unique moment in the history (7th and 8th centuries) of the Church where many cultural, intellectual, and social traditions combined for the conversion to the following of Christianity in northern England. The course will cover the lives and works of numerous saints, including Wilfrid, Cuthbert, Acca, Stephen of Ripon, and Bede. Special emphasis will be placed on how the saints and scholars were able to combine Christianity with the contemporary culture. Hilliard W HI337 HI364 HI367 HI375 NARRATORS OF CHRISTIAN HISTORY In this course the student will explore the Christian historiographical tradition as it came into being by reading from the works of Eusebius/Rufinus, Augustine, and Bede. Furthermore this foundational tradition will be compared with a famous Catholic historian from the recent era, Christopher Dawson. The major themes to be explored are the nature and workings of God’s Providence and the relationship of Christianity to the world. Hilliard W AMERICAN CATHOLIC—ORIGIN TO CIVIL WAR The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to, and general survey of, the Catholic Church in the United States from the European explorations to the eve of the Civil War (1550-1860). Special emphasis will be placed on significant moments of U.S. Catholic History chosen to illustrate/highlight persons, events, and issues that have helped shape our historical experience. Zielinski S AMERICAN CATHOLIC IMMIGRANTS Since the middle of the nineteenth century, the American Catholic Church has to respond to growing numbers of Catholic immigrants. The pastoral needs of the new Irish, German, Polish, and Italian immigrants demanded the attention of the American Catholic Bishops. This course examines the various needs of these groups and the responses of the American Catholic Church. The issues of language and culture often created tensions within the American Catholic Church. A study of these immigrant groups shows how the character of the American Catholic Church was shaped during these seventy years. Zielinski F AMERICAN CATHOLIC SOCIAL ISSUES The statements of the American hierarchy in recent years concentrate on a number of social issues. These statements reflect a long tradition of American Catholic involvement in social issues. HI395 EUROPEAN INFLUENCE ON AMERICAN CATHOLICISM The Roman Catholic Church in the United States developed between 1840 and 1920 into an institution that was at once both uniquely American and very much European. When successive waves of Catholic immigrants-Irish, Polish, Italian and Hispanic, arrived in America between 1840 and 1950, the Church’s effort to organize these new Americans into a unified urban Church transformed both the immigrants and the Church.
