Mundelein’s Pilgrimage Quarter
Pilgrimage Quarter
The Mundelein Seminary Pilgrimage Program
is designed to be a spiritual enrichment that
enhances the seminarian’s relationship to
Christ in a very deep and profound way
through contemplative prayer and study of the
Sacred Scriptures at the holy sites of our salvation
history. As such it incorporates the following
components:
A 10 week pilgrimage-study program that
is offered in the 3rd year of major seminary,
before their diaconate ordination.
Visits to the major sites of the Old and
New Testament which include biblical reflections,
time for prayer and liturgy.
A full load of courses specifically focused
around the spiritual themes of the pilgrimage
and prayer that include 2 Sacred
Scripture courses, a Spiritual Theology
course, and an Ecumenical/Interreligious
course all taught by Mundelein Seminary
faculty who accompany the seminarians.
Daily Mass (often at Holy sites) and communal
recitation of the Divine Office.
Connections to the work of organizations
such as the Catholic Relief Services, the
Sisters of Charity, the Christian Brothers at
Bethlehem University, and other works
done by various Church and religious orders
in the Holy Land.
Is the Pilgrimage Quarter required?
The Pilgrimage Quarter is optional. Some
students may have economic or personal reasons
that would make the trip too much of a
hardship.
What are the expenses of the program and
how are they paid?
The expenses for the program (housing, food,
travel arrangements, faculty) are covered by
the regular tuition that each diocese pays. The
airfare is the only cost to the student (of
course, the seminarian’s diocese may cover
this cost.)
