For over 2 decades we have been providing immersion
suits for seafarers worldwide. Our products are made to
the most stringent regulations and easily surpass IMO

Why are most suits made of neoprene?
Neoprene provides one of the best materials for
immersion suits. It offers a self-insulating, self-buoyant
material that requires less maintenance than suits
designed with secondary insulating liners and coated
outershells that can rip and easily tear. Fire retardant
nylon covered neoprene is extremely durable and will
provide a long service life. But be careful, not all suits
that call themselves neoprene are made from top grade
neoprene. Cheaper compounds can “dry-out” and
cause seams to let loose in only a few years. Cheaper
neoprene will also stiffen in cold storage. Stearns ®
immersion suits use only the best grade of neoprene
and materials available.
Are neoprene suits easy to put on?
When challenged in an emergency, you want your
immersion suit to don quickly and
easily. The one piece neoprene
immersion suit is easier and
quicker to don than nylon suits
with a secondary liner that can
snag, twist and pull free from the
shell. To help train your crew,
Stearns offers a FREE CD on how
to properly don your immersion
suit. Each suit is shipped with a self
adhesive donning placard. Time
runs out fast in a freezing sea, be
sure to practice donning your suit.
Do STEARNS immersion suits have a
warranty?
Stearns provides a full 3 year warranty on all immersion
suits. Stearns will repair or replace any immersion suit
with defects in materials and workmanship.
How is the suit constructed?
Stearns ® immersion suits are made from the highest
quality of neoprene to provide long life. The materials
used in our suits have been carefully selected to offer
consistent quality and must pass our extensive quality
audit. All seams are reinforced with our “triple strength”
assurance of seam integrity. The “triple strength” security
assures the wearer maximum seam strength by double
gluing the seam bonds, taping the inside seams, then
top stitching all exposed seams. No suit provides better
quality in materials or construction.
What about the zipper?
The zipper is one of the most
important components. That’s why
we only use the YKK ® brand water
barrier zipper. Our experience
shows that the YKK ® brand
zipper provides the most reliable
watertight zipper with long life.
Sure, there are cheaper zippers on the
market but, when lives are at stake, we
only use the best. To help keep your zipper in working
condition, each Stearns ® suit is shipped with a tube of
zipper lubricant to keep your zipper sliding like new.
Are suits inspected before they are shipped?
All suits are inspected in full compliance with the
U.S. Coast Guard standards and MED (Ships Wheel)
requirements. We will provide a certificate of
conformance with each shipment certifying the suits
on that order, listed by serial number, pass all tests as
outlined within our approval certificate.
How do we inspect our suits on board?
SOLAS Ch. III, Reg 20.7 and 36 call for the monthly
inspection of life-saving appliances. To assist your crew,
Stearns offers a FREE CD demonstrating the proper way
to inspect and repack your immersion suit.
How can I get my suit serviced?
In addition to the monthly routine shipboard inspections,
IMO recommendations call for an air pressure testing of
immersion suits every 3 years; more often with suits over
10 years old. Stearns is expanding our network of factory
trained and authorized
inspection facilities
around the globe to
ensure that vessels
are not far from an
authorized inspection
and repair station.
All approved service
stations must pass
our certified training
program and conform
to our guidelines as described in their training manual.
They stock a full supply of repair materials and will
complete the inspection and return suits to you as
quickly as possible. We recommend that suits be factory
inspected at regular intervals to provide the longest life
possible.

What is the expected life of my suit?
Stearns is one of the oldest manufacturers of immersion
suits in the world, we have been manufacturing
immersion suits for over 2 decades. Although many suits
over 20 years old are still in service and continue to pass
all buoyancy and strength tests, we have found that the
most common useful life expectancy of a neoprene
immersion suit averages about 12 years. Of course, how
an immersion suit is used, stored, packed and serviced
will affect the useful life expectancy.
How does the suit keep me from getting cold?
Neoprene immersion suits provide thermal protection
by insulating the body from the outside cold water
environment. By sealing out the cold water’s effect and
keeping warmer air inside, radiated by your own body
heat, the wearer will delay the effects of hypothermia.
Some people refer to this level of insulation as
"immersed CLO value". Stearns ® immersion suits provide
a minimum of .75 CLO passing IMO requirements of
not allowing the wearers internal body temperature to
drop more than 2 degrees C over a 6 hour period in 35
degree (1.7C) water. This is minimum compliance. The
Stearns ® immersion suit worn over normal clothing easily
surpasses these specifications.
What else affects cold water survival?
We pioneered research on the physiological and
psychological effects of cold stress. Until now, virtually
all hypothermia research has addressed reducing loss
of the body’s core temperature. We are discovering,
however, that hypothermia has other undesirable side
effects. Disorientation and hallucinations are not
uncommon reactions.
Survival then, may depend not only on maintaining
core temperature, but also controlling behavior and
accomplishing minimal physical tasks.
Laboratory research can only go so far. Which is why
we carefully combine controlled testing with real world
testing. Working with the Hypothermia-Water Safety
Institute and the United States Coast Guard, we’ve made
Lake Superior (average temp. 40°F [4.4°C]) an important
test bed.
Using umbilical lines, we’ve monitored temperatures,
respiration and heart rates. We’ve tested stability in
heavy seas. We’ve tried to duplicate real world conditions
to measure and improve survival. In the test lab, we’ve
pushed temperatures down to -20°F (-28.9°C) to analyze
flexibility and donning procedures. Even at that extreme,
our I590 stays flexible and easy to put on.
Will temperature affect my suit?
IMO regulations require that suits be placed so as to
be readily accessible and their position shall be plainly
indicated. This requires suits to be placed in various
locations. Stearns ® suits are tested to withstand
excessive storage temperature cycles of minus 22F to
149F (-30C to 65C). To mark the suits location, each
suit is shipped with a self adhesive donning placard
identifying the location of storage. NOTE: Use caution
to keep suits away from engine emissions and abrasive
vapors that can harm the suit.
Is sizing important?
It is critical that the suit fit properly. The worst possible
scenario is having a suit too small. Unlike many
manufacturers who design suits to save materials,
we design our suits with ample room to fit over extra
insulating clothing. An improper size suit can also
impair the suits

the insulation
value and restrict
mobility. We offer
our suits in 4 sizes (Child, Small Adult, Adult Universal,
Adult Oversize) in color coded storage bags.
What approvals do you have?
Our immersion suits are sold with two basic approvals.
Our model I590 Type C is MED (Ships Wheel) approved
to meet the SOLAS requirements through Lloyd's
Registry. Our model I590 Type S is U.S. Coast Guard
and MED (Ships Wheel) meeting SOLAS requirements
through the U.S. Coast Guard. Additional approvals
include Chinese Classification Society and Russian
Maritime Registry. Copies of approvals are available
upon request.
What features are available?
Standard features on each suit include: five finger
attached glove, light pocket, hard foot soles, storm shield
face flap, ankle take up straps, SOLAS grade marine
whistle, SOLAS grade reflective tape, self adhesive
donning placard, air expulsion valves and color coded
storage bag. Optional features are stainless steel helio
lifting harness, buddy line and choice approved SOLAS
lights.
