Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas,
Second Homily
Did you love today’s gospel about the feeding of the 5,000 hungry people? Don’t you just
love this miracle story! It is about Jesus taking care of all of his people through the gift of
a child—his five barley loaves and two fish! But do you realize that there are several
miracles in this story? The first miracle was the willingness of the child to share. He
gave up his entire lunch for the sake of all. He obviously was well taught by parents to
share whatever was his. The second miracle is of an orderly crowd in the face of hunger in a massive
gathering. There was no fighting, no shouting, no arguing—just good Christian behavior. The third miracle
was an unwillingness to waste any food—even in the face of an extraordinary surplus. As usual, God’s
blessings are ever present and super abundant. And then, the miracle of the divine multiplication of the
loaves and the fish. Jesus feeding his people and meeting all their hungers.
The Archdiocese of Chicago has recently established a five year Pastoral Plan. The first year of the plan was
focused on Ministry to Youth and Young Adults. The second year of this endeavor is called the Year of the
Sunday Mass which began in July. We are challenged to understand more deeply the Liturgy and why we
should come to church faithfully every week. We are also asked to reach out to others to invite them to
church and to gather around the table of the Lord to experience the Eucharist. Our weekly bulletin will help
us to understand this Year of the Sunday Mass.
If you looked around Church today, you would have seen some very happy faces but extremely tired bodies.
This was the week of Joseph and the Amazing Techinicolor Dreamcoat. Our entire cast and crew have
earned this Sabbath rest. I sat in on the dress rehearsals earlier this week and was amazed by the talent and
the energy exhibited by all these beautifully gifted people. The pictures in today’s bulletin were taken at the
rehearsals and give only a glimpse of their superb production. Hopefully, you were able to attend one of the
performances this week. If not, you missed a golden opportunity! No—I should say you missed a
“Technicolor” opportunity. Next week, we will present the official reviews about the performance and the
thank yous from our director—Mrs. Jane Liquin. Meanwhile thanks to the cast and crew for their wholehearted
commitment to this project presented for the pleasure of our St. Thomas of Villanova Parish Family.
Thanks to all of your who are bringing back church bulletins from your summer travels. I read them all. I was
intrigued by one Wisconsin bulletin which had only two pages total— of nothing! But whose Parish Mission
Statement on the front said it so succinctly - “To love as HE loved, to live as HE lived, to share as HE
shared.” Very simple and direct! Not even a complete sentence. Like Nike says – “Just do it!”
The US Open was in June. The British Open is now over in July. But, the St. Thomas of Villanova 9th
Annual Golf Outing will take place soon. Have you signed yourself up or your foursome?
ENDING THE EXCUSES!
EXCUSES, EXCUSES. I’ve had my share of them as
you probably have too. (Too inexperienced, too old,
too shy, too overly-scheduled, too uneducated, too
this and too that.) For example, “I’ll go visit that
person in the Care Center when my work load
lessens. I’ll send a message of comfort when I find
the right card. I’ll volunteer to be a CATHECHIST
when I know more about my faith. On and on the
excuses go, and all the while the Holy One urges us
to forego those reasons and share the Love. But
eventually we have to put those excuses behind us
and go! (Excerpt from - A Living Faith Daily Devotions booklet).
Put an end to your excuses and call me. I would love
to have you become a part of the Catechist Club and
teach Religious Education to God’s children.
Our needs are:
• 8 th Grade on Monday – 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Understanding Our Faith
Grow In Faith
While Serving
Others
The St. Thomas SPRED Community is in need of some
special volunteers to serve alongside some special adults
starting this fall.
We serve two small groups of adults with developmental
disabilities; each group meets two times a month on
either Wednesday or Thursday evenings- late September
to mid-May from 6:45 – 9:00pm. The groups share
activities, prayer/scripture and simple snacks all centered
on exploring and celebrating our shared faith in Christ.
The rewards of serving in SPRED go far beyond our
actual meeting time-and the time spent together in our
group meetings are a blessing to not only our catechists
and their special friends, but also to families, friends and
those who serve many of our participants.
A few of our dedicated catechists of many years have
decided to retire, and both groups are in need of some
new volunteers for the fall. We now need...
Wednesday Evening
‘formal’ lesson part of our evening. This is based on a
very detailed lesson plan from the SPRED office of the
Thursday Evening
• Activity Catechist—primary duties are to facilitate the
activity portion of our evening. Activities are simple,
individual opportunities to help all of us to prepare for the
sharing of the Gospel message.
• Helper Catechist—primary duties are to serve as a partner
to one of our ‘special friends’ by providing a sense of
stability and spirituality through-out our meetings.
Patience With God
There's an adage that says that an atheist is simply
someone who cannot grasp metaphor. Thomas Halik,
the Czech writer, would suggest rather that an
atheist is someone who cannot be patient enough
with God.
There is a lot of truth in that. Patience with God is
perhaps our greatest faith-struggle. God, it would
seem, is never in a hurry and because of that we live
with an impatience that can test the strongest faith
and the stoutest heart.
Life, as we can all attest to, is not without its bitter
frustrations and crushing heartaches. We all live
with a lot of pain and unresolved tensions. Who
among us doesn't experience regularly the pain of
sickness, various kinds of personal and professional
failure, some kind of humiliation, the inadequacy of
self-expression, the soul-searing losses of loved
ones, every kind of frustrated longing, and the
nagging pain of life's inadequacy? In this life, there's
no such a thing as a clear-cut, pure joy; rather
everything comes with shadow. We do in fact live
inside a certain valley of tears.
We are built for happiness, but pure happiness never
quite finds us. Neither, it would seem, does
justice. Jesus promised that the meek would inherit
the earth, but mostly it doesn't seem that way. The
arrogant among us often believe that. There's an
infamous Ziggy cartoon which shows him praying to
God in these words: I just want to let you know that
the meek are still getting clobbered down here!
Often that appears to be the case. So where is God?
Where is the truth in Jesus' promise about the meek
inheriting the earth? In the face of long-standing
global injustice we either live in a long-suffering
patience with God or we come to believe that
neither God's promises nor God's existence hold true.
When Jesus was dying on the cross, some onlookers
where taunting him and challenging his message
with the words: If you are the Son of God, let him
rescue you! In essence: If God is real and your
message is true, prove it right now! And God let
Jesus die! The same held true for Jesus himself in
the face of the death of Lazarus. In essence, he was
being challenged: If you possess God's power in this
world and you love this man, why don't you save him
from dying? Jesus let Lazarus die! And the first
community of disciples, immediately after the
Ascension, painfully struggled with the same
question: Jesus is God and he loves us - so why does
he let us die?
10
Each of us asks that question in our own way
because what we want is a God who rescues us, who
intervenes actively for justice and goodness in this
world, who acts visibly now in this life, and who
doesn't let us get sick and die. None of us want a
God who asks us to live in a life-long patience,
predicated on the promise that in the end, whenever
that will be, love and justice will prevail, all
tears will be dried, and all will finally be well. We
want life, love, justice and consummation now, not
in some distant future and only after a lifetime of
heartache. God, as an old Jewish axiom puts it, is
never in a hurry!
And so we live with a lot of expressed and
unexpressed impatience with God. Atheists, it would
seem, at a certain point just give up on playing the
game and, in essence, say the words: I've seen
enough; I've waited enough; and it's not enough! I
will no longer wait for God! But if atheism is just
another way of saying I will no longer wait for God
than the opposite is also true: Faith is just another
way of saying: I will wait for God. If atheism is
impatience, faith is patience.
The Italian spiritual writer, Carlo Carretto, after
spending more than 20 years in solitude as a monk in
the Sahara desert, was asked what single thing he
felt that he heard God most say to him inside of the
long, deep silence. What, he was asked, do you hear
God saying to the world? His answer: God is asking us
to wait, to be patient!
Why the need for such great patience? Does God
want to test us? Does God want to see if we indeed
have a faith that is worthy of a great reward? No.
God has no need to play such a game, and neither do
we. It's not that God wants to test our patience. The
need for patience arises out of the rhythms innate
within life itself and within love itself. They need to
unfold, as do flowers and pregnancies, according to
their own innate rhythms and within their own good
time. They cannot be rushed, no matter how great
our impatience or how great our discomfort.
And neither can God be rushed because it is his
timetable that protects us from perpetually stunting
life and love by drawing them through the birth
canal prematurely.
On Dinnertime, Bounty & Let’s Go Eat
Copyright 2012 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com)
As I see it, one of the best things in life is a really good meal. Yes,
I’ve had my share of fancy dishes--mostly while on the road for
my job--but food doesn’t need to be gourmet fare to satisfy in
gourmet fashion. A good burger can beat a filet on any given day.
I remember the best upscale seafood linguini I ever tasted, and it
was extraordinary. In an opposite vein, however, I still hold that
the late-night dinner of cheese, crackers, and summer sausage
my wife’s aunt gave me once was a feast beyond anything I could
get from downtown. Per Virginia Woolf, “One cannot live well,
love well, or sleep well unless one has dined well.” From all
angles, I agree.
Two of today’s readings have to do with food and feasting. In the
first passage from the Book of Kings, we learn of Elisha’s servant
who comes to the prophet with twenty barley loaves, and “fresh
grain in the ear.” Elisha tells him to give it to the people to eat,
but the servant protests, saying, “How can I set this before a
hundred people?” The prophet insists, though, explaining, “For
thus says the Lord, ‘They shall eat and there shall be some left
over.’” And what do you know! The gourmets out there may not
have much good to say about barley loaves and corn--or about
crackers, cheese, and summer sausage--but as the adage goes,
hunger makes the best sauce. Let the feasting begin.
This passage is a foreshadowing, of course, of today’s Gospel
passage, the Evangelist John’s account of the multiplication of
loaves that leads into our Lord’s declaration that he is the Bread
of life. With the crowd massing before them, Jesus tests his
disciple Philip, asking him where they can buy enough food for
everyone. “Two hundred days wages worth of food would not be
enough for each of them to have a little,” he replies. Then
Andrew points out the boy who has five loaves and two fishes,
but admits, “…what good are these for so many?” Jesus directs
his disciples to have the people recline (“about five thousand in
number”), and we all know what happens next.
An old Lyle Lovett song tells of a Sunday preacher going on and
on about Judgment Day and warning the congregation that they
had better pay attention to him or he might just keep preaching all
day long. Everyone’s hungry, though, so the person telling the
story comes up with a plan, and when the time is right, the entire
church joins him in song: “To the Lord let praises be/ It’s time for
dinner now, let’s go eat…” Seeing the many signs and wonders
Jesus is performing for the sick among them, the people follow
Jesus up the mountain in today’s Gospel text because they are all
hungry for more of what this
man has to offer. One
hunger leads to another,
however, and Christ proves
to be much smarter than
Lyle Lovett’s preacher-man.
Jesus knows he has to feed
the people’s bodies before
he can really feed their
souls, and with his Bread of
Life discourse coming up,
what a feast he has
planned! Truly, to the Lord
let praises be/ It’s time for
dinner now, let’s go eat!
