ABC Seminar Series for Non-native Speakers <strong>of</strong> English<br />

A for Academics, B for Business, C for Communication<br />

Caroline Coppola, M.S. Ed. TESOL, has been teaching all aspects <strong>of</strong> ESL <strong>to</strong> college students and<br />

adults for over 20 years. She is on <strong>the</strong> QCC staff <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CUNY Language Immersion Program (CLIP)<br />

and has been an adjunct instruc<strong>to</strong>r in several colleges in <strong>the</strong> Metro NY area.<br />

Stephen B. Horowitz, Esq. specializes in legal, business, and new media communications as well as<br />

ESL. He lived in Japan for 3.5 years during which time he worked for two Japanese law firms, studied<br />

law at a Japanese university, and taught English in Japan’s public school system.<br />

English for Academic & Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Purposes See Below Spring <strong>2013</strong> Schedule<br />

Designed with <strong>the</strong> adult “returning <strong>to</strong> college” in mind, this course gives advanced non-native<br />

speakers <strong>of</strong> English <strong>the</strong> opportunity <strong>to</strong> enrich <strong>the</strong>ir vocabulary and reading and writing skills<br />

necessary for college courses and careers. Topics: improving vocabulary, making inferences,<br />

summarizing, reading and writing various genres <strong>of</strong> non-fiction, essays and personal narratives.<br />

Each class begins with a discussion <strong>of</strong> <strong>to</strong>pics, followed by reading and <strong>the</strong>n time in <strong>the</strong> computer<br />

lab <strong>to</strong> develop students’ own work.<br />

Learn how <strong>to</strong> make presentations, write e-mails, improve phone skills, and engage in negotiations<br />

in a business setting. Improve collaboration, writing, reading, conversation, and presentation<br />

skills. Topics include: marketing, finance, human resources, and job searching.<br />

Business Law Offered Fall <strong>2013</strong><br />

Study and discuss basic business law concepts, including contracts, litigation, and bankruptcy.<br />

Legal English & American Legal Culture Offered Fall <strong>2013</strong><br />

Study and discuss <strong>the</strong> basic concepts <strong>of</strong> American law and legal culture, including <strong>the</strong> legal<br />

thinking, jury system, immigration, and legal humor.<br />

Phone Communication<br />

Learn vocabulary, phrases and etiquette in English for talking on <strong>the</strong> phone in a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

situations, especially in business and pr<strong>of</strong>essional settings. Practice greetings, ending a call,<br />

requesting information, taking a message, leaving a message/voicemails, etc. Understand how<br />

<strong>to</strong> use strategies and appropriate English <strong>to</strong> help with difficult calls, such as calls <strong>to</strong> a large<br />

government agency, a bank or an insurance company.<br />

New Media Writing & Publishing Offered Summer <strong>2013</strong><br />

Improve your English by creating, writing for, and publishing an online magazine. Students<br />

will work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> develop <strong>the</strong>mes and article ideas and will <strong>the</strong>n create <strong>the</strong> content (i.e.,<br />

conduct interviews, do research, and write and edit articles) for a real online publication that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y publish <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />
