Isostearic acid is derived from natural oils and differentiated from many other branched fatty acids by its methyl-branching. These kind of methyl-branched fatty acids and alcohols are often found in nature as protection for aquatic birds whom use these ‘waxes’ to keep the feathers in optimal condition and be protected against climatic conditions. The branched isostearic esters are known as liquid lipids and are widely used in cosmetic and personal wash applications where they provide good spreading, non-tacky and pleasant skin feel. An important advantage of using the isostearic acid and derivatives over the corresponding oleic acid and derivatives is the low iodine value, due to the absence of the unsaturation.
