Liberty Mutual kicked off its Be Fire Smart Safety Pledge in September. As one of its fire safety initiatives, the pledge program awards 10 grants of $10,000 to local fire departments across the country in communities that show a strong commitment to fire safety. “I am a native of this area as well as born and raised,” said Charles Parker of Liberty Mutual Insurance. “My office is also located in Mooresville, so this was a great opportunity <strong>for</strong> me to help out the community and give back in several different ways.” Mooresville Fire and Rescue encouraged members of the community to take a 10-question online quiz that tested their knowledge of fire safety. Each quiz was then credited to Mooresville Fire and Rescue. At the end of the 60-day promotion period, Mooresville Fire and Rescue finished fourth in the nation within the medium-size department category. According to Shane LaCount, assistant fire chief, the department will use the grant money to purchase two Sparky the Fire Dogs costumes to spread the message of fire safety to children. In addition the department will start a new community program that provides weather alert radios to senior citizens and other facilities. Fire Chief Wes Greene thanked the community <strong>for</strong> its participation in the online survey. ❑ Town adopts logo to incorporate lake, racing MOORESVILLE – Town commissioners adopted a new logo that pays homage to Mooresville’s lake and racing industries. The town will begin using the logo on its website and newsletter on Jan. 1. A digital template also will be created <strong>for</strong> use on stationary. The logo is comprised of a big wave to represent the lake and a checkered flag in the background to represent racing. The town’s public services division will fabricate decals 4 inches in diameter to go on town vehicles at a cost of $3,000. Other uses, such as signs, will occur on a per-case basis as funding permits. The town manager’s office will approve the use of the logo, which will not appear on official contract or regulatory documents. ❑ Town wins emergency shelter grant MOORESVILLE – The town will use a $19,610 grant from North <strong>Carolina</strong> Emergency Management <strong>for</strong> the ability to convert the War Memorial into an evacuation shelter. The grant will go toward the purchase of an automatic transfer switch, which will allow the town to connect to a generator <strong>for</strong> emergency power. The town does not have to provide any matching funds <strong>for</strong> the grant. ❑ Senior Center offers healthier life class MOORESVILLE – Learn how to live a healthier life with chronic health problems from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 19 to Feb. 23, at the South Iredell Senior Center, 202 N. Details: The Cycle Path, 704 896-3331 or www.RockyRiverRoad Club.org. ❑ NASCAR driver hosts golf tourney to help children MOORESVILLE – NASCAR driver Justin Lofton will host a charity golf tournament on Jan. 22 in Brawley, Calif., to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of the Imperial Valley. “It means a lot to me to host this event in my hometown and to be able to donate the proceeds to kids in that area,” Lofton said. Lofton, who is the 2009 ARCA Racing Series champion, recently completed his first full season of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition. Through the 25-race schedule, Lofton tallied four top-five and eight top-10 finishes. He ended the season ranked 12th in the driver point standings. Though a racer at heart, Lofton also is an avid golfer, and wanted to take advantage of the off-season while giving back to those in his hometown.
