Davidson Day’s Johnson leads
boys team to special victories
After dropping its first two games of
the season to Forsyth Country Day and
Cary Academy, the Davidson Day boys
team has responded with seven consecutive
wins. The Patriots’ two most
recent victories were special to coach
Ron Johnson.
Davidson Day returned from a trip
to Florida last weekend after defeating
Class 4A public school Heritage High
School (Palm Bay, Florida) on Dec. 3
and talented Holy Trinity (Melbourne,
Florida) on Dec. 4.
Johnson said Holy Trinity is considered
one of the best Class 3A publicschool
teams in Florida, but the reason
the victories were so important to the
Patriots’ coach is because both Sunshine
State head coaches – Heritage’s
Steve Link and Holy Trinity’s Stevie
Henderson – played for Johnson when
he coached at Melbourne Central
Catholic School. It’s safe to say he has
bragging rights over his former players.
“If we didn’t win down there, at some
point I would have heard about it –
maybe not that weekend, but sometime
in the future,” joked Johnson. “It was a
very rewarding experience. That’s why I
coach: to see kids do well. I told (Link
and Henderson) that I was proud of
them. I saw some of the same principles
I taught them, and we shared some
stories about how I used to make them
run in practice.”
Hopewell’s Watson wins at
Jim Hayes Invitational
Hopewell High wrestler Nick Watson
swept his matches to win the 215-
pound division at the 43rd annual Jim
Hayes Invitational at East Mecklenburg
High Dec. 4.
Watson pinned the field in a combined
3 minutes, 43 seconds. In the
first round, he defeated Boiling Springs
Crest’s Thomas Willis in 34 seconds.
His next match, against Ardrey Kell’s
Danny Kim, took 1:03, followed by
wins over Independence’s Jabari Cuffie
(57 seconds) and North Gaston’s Cody
Willett (1:09).
The Titans finished ninth among
20 teams. Hopewell’s Wesley Petrick
was second in the 112-pound weight
class with a 3-1 record. Ed Stokes (135
pounds) and Tyshaun Cochran (285)
were fourth.
