Transplant
(continued from page 22)
Transplant provides future
Donna was excited when she was
finally called into surgery. Still, the procedure
was risky. Before doctors wheeled
her into the operating room, Donna and
N.B. prayed.
“If this doesn’t work out, I’m ready for
the Lord to take me,” she told N.B.
It has snowed that day, so no one
could get to the hospital to be with N.B.
as he waited. But Donna’s faith helped
strengthen his, he said, and N.B. felt at
peace throughout her surgery.
As N.B. awaited the results of his wife’s
surgery, he watched another family’s tragedy
unfold on the television screen in the
waiting room. NFL player Chris Henry,
of the Cincinnati Bengals, had died in
a car wreck while visiting Charlotte. It
would be almost a year before N.B. and
Donna would know the role the football
star played in their lives.
Donna’s transplant was a success,
and she is now fully cured of diabetes.
Faith
On Oct. 15, her transplant coordinator
called to inform her who her donor was
– Chris Henry. Not a football fan, Donna
hadn’t heard of Henry, but her coordinator
explained his status and told her she
would soon have the opportunity to meet
his mother, Carolyn Glaspy.
“I was so nervous,” Donna said of the
meeting. “I felt so guilty that her son had
to die for me to live.”
Donna, Glaspy and the other recipients
of Henry’s organs cried together during
their meeting.
Glaspy, who decided to donate her
son’s organs, told the group that meeting
them was her closure, Donna
said. “She knew Chris was still living
through us. I told her he would always
live through me.”
Although she’s still recovering from
her surgery, Donna’s quality of life has
improved 100 percent, she said.
But she still sees her 34-year battle
with diabetes as a blessing.
“Those struggles strengthened my
faith,” she said. “I know God’s there, and
he’s helping me.” q
