GOLDEN LIONS
On behalf of the entire St. Pius community, I welcome you to the campus
of St. Pius X Catholic High School.
We are happy to have you on our campus and to celebrate the talents of
our student athletes. We are grateful for them and to all who participate in
making our athletic programs so successful and a joy to watch.
For the third year in a row St. Pius X celebrated winning the GADA
Athletic Director’s Cup, signifying the best overall sports program in our
classification in the state. Additionally, our girls program was named the
best in the state by placing first with our boys placing second in the over-all
competition. We are very proud of our athletes, but more importantly, for
the manner and fashion in which they represent St. Pius.
We are also elated over the recent physical completion of our Field of
Dreams project providing much needed space and fields for our students
to use. They are a beautiful and functional addition to our campus and
we appreciate the support of our families in making this dream become a
reality.
We wish to issue a special welcome to the visitors from other schools and
to all returning St. Pius X alumni and their families. Your presence, support
and encouragement are a continuing reflection of your commitment to
your school.
I hope you enjoy your visit to our campus as we all look forward to another
successful year for the St. Pius X athletic program.
Warmest regards,
GOLDEN LIONS
Welcome to St. Pius X Catholic High School!
Whether you are a Golden Lion fan, or a fan of the visiting team,
we know you will enjoy tonight’s contest. High school athletics
are special. This is competition at its purest form. The young
men and ladies who perform here tonight will do so because of
their love of their sport, their commitment to their school, their
commitment to their friends, and because they love the thrill that
“competition” offers them.
We are very proud of our athletic program here at St. Pius X. Over
73% of our students participate in the program. Last year 21 of
our 22 varsity teams advanced to the state playoffs. We captured
our third consecutive Director’s Cup. This is a confirmation of the
hard work of our students, our coaches, our parents, and our
alumni. We are also very proud and thankful of the relationships
we have developed over the years with the schools with whom
we compete. We, along with all of these schools, work hard daily
to better each and every child entrusted to us.
I hope you enjoy this contest and visit our beautiful campus often.
Now sit back, cheer for your team, and enjoy the game!
St. Pius X Catholic High School
St. Pius X Catholic High School opened its doors
in September 1958 as the first high school of the
newly established Diocese of Atlanta. Under the
leadership of our first principal, Fr. James Harrison,
his staff of 22 teachers, and 418 students, the school
quickly developed a unity and spirit all its own. That
unity and spirit has grown and developed over the
past 53 years to what it is today as we enter this
eleventh year of leadership under our principal,
Mr. Steve Spellman, and a staff of over 130 people
serving the needs of over 1,000 students.
While the spirit of our students has remained
constant since 1958, our campus has undergone
many changes. In 1964, the stadium, which is now
known as George B. Maloof Stadium, was built,
and in 1975 our gym, the John Paul II Activities
Center, was completed. Both of these facilities were
built and funded by our parents and the Athletic
Association. In 1985, through funds received from
a capital campaign by the Archdiocese, a major
construction effort added our current library, a
10
about our school
performing arts center, and new classrooms.
Also at that time, the George Sattele Track
was converted from the old style cinders to
the current latex surface. In 1992, the field
house, known as the Lions’ Den, was razed
and the present Donnellan Center was built to
serve two purposes. The rear of the building
includes expanded locker rooms, a training
room, a weight room, and coaches’ offices.
The front portion houses our Development and
Alumni offices. In 1998, St. Pius X completed its
second major change with the completion of the
Science and Math wing, an auxiliary gym, and
renovations in Maloney Hall. These renovations
included moving our Guidance and Campus
Ministry Offices into new suites, the expansion
of the art room, and the establishment of three
computer labs along with new paint, lighting and
new carpeting throughout the entire school.
GOLDEN LIONS
Further major improvements were completed
during the 2004-2005 year with a new arts wing
and renovated stadium and cafeteria.
The 2007-2008 school year witnessed the
celebration of St. Pius’ 50th year. The yearlong
celebration included Mass in the stadium and a
carnival to open the school year on the feast day
of St. Pius X; a grand homecoming and reunion
weekend extravaganza in the fall; the “Golden
Gala” auction and dinner in February; and a May
graduation which included the return of members of
the first graduating class. Most recently, the Seaver
Family Sports Complex was completed through the
Expanding Our Legacy Capital Campaign. The
complex features a baseball diamond and a practice
field with cutting edge synthetic turf surfaces. This
addition is the first land expansion the school has
seen since it’s opening in 1958. The campaign is
still underway and will continue until the remaining
$2.8 million is raised.
our school. St. Pius is committed to excellence
in all aspects of its program. Our academic
program is outstanding and challenges a broad
spectrum of student abilities. Approximately
99 percent of our graduates have continued
their education at many of the finest colleges
and universities all over America. St. Pius is
also home to many achievements in other
areas, from state championships in athletics to
wonderful performances in the arts, to accolades
for our efforts in journalism and debate. We are
very proud of the multiplicity of extracurricular
activities in which our students are involved.
The success of our school is due to its
community of faith. The future of St. Pius X will
continue to flourish because of that faith which
lives in the heart of its community.
The face of our campus has changed, but the spirit
of the Golden Lion remains strong and vibrant in this
community. A rich program of activities complements
the strong and comprehensive program offered at
about our school
St. Pius X Catholic High School
MISSION STATEMENT
St. Pius X, an archdiocesan high school, provides a college
preparatory education for the formation of the mind, body
and spirit of each student in accordance with the teachings
of the Catholic Church.
VISION STATEMENT
To form students of strong character and deep faith who
complete college, serve others, and participate actively in
the life of the Church.
OUR VALUES
Supernatural Vision: We foster the growth of good human
beings who love God and neighbor and thus achieve their
eternal destiny of heaven through the teachings of the
Catholic Church.
Centrality of Christ: We are founded on Jesus Christ the
Redeemer who, through His Incarnation, is united with
each person and is both the model and means for personal
holiness.
Community: We are a community of persons bound by the
Catholic Faith who recognize our school as an extension of
the intimate atmosphere of family life.
• Teamwork/collaboration among administrators, faculty,
and parents for the school’s common good
• Interaction of students and teachers which is a dialogue
and not a monologue
• Physical environment that has amenities that create a
pleasant family atmosphere
Integral Education: We aim to develop the intellectual,
physical, psychological, moral and religious capabilities of
every student.
Truth: We seek to teach not merely knowledge but
understanding, wisdom and truth. Human beings can grasp
the truth of things, and in grasping that truth can know their
duties to God, themselves, and their neighbors.
PRAYER OF ST. PIUS X
O Lord Jesus Christ, let Your passion be my strength to
sustain, guard, and protect me. Let Your wounds be my food
and drink to nourish, fill, and invigorate me.
Let the shedding of Your Blood cleanse me of all my sins. Let
Your death obtain eternal life for me
and Your cross lead me to everlasting glory.
Let these constitute for me refreshment and joy, health and
uprightness of heart.
ALMA MATER
Domini Sumus: We are the Lord’s,
Ring out the bells of St. Pius,
Echoes resounding in golden tone,
A spirit that’s hers alone.
(Refrain)
We’re proud of you our Alma Mater,
Because of you we’re strong.
St. Pius Tenth, with you we’ll triumph,
To your call we throng.
From your wisdom and your courage,
We learn to banish fear,
Searching for life’s dream and promise,
Finding guidance near.
When from you we are departed,
When our four years are spent,
St. Pius, we’ll ever honor,
Ideals you represent.
EXPLANATION OF THE SCHOOL CREST
The school crest contains much from the life
of Pope St. Pius X. On the crest, the winged
lion symbolizes the St. Mark, patron of Venice,
the city of which Cardinal Sarto was patriarch
and cardinal before he became pope. As pope,
Pius X retained this symbol for his own coat
of arms. It is from this symbol that the school
proudly calls itself the “Golden Lions.”
Appearing on the coat of arms of both Pius X and the first
Archbishop of Atlanta are the waves of the sea. On the saint’s
coat of arms they represent the seaport of Venice. On the
coat of arms of the Archbishop of Atlanta and on our own,
they symbolize the city of Atlanta, named from the Atlantic
Ocean.
Superimposed on the waves is the anchor of hope, again
from the coat of arms of Pius X. At the lower left of the
shield is a sword. This is the symbol of the martyrdom of
St. Paul from whose First Epistle to the Corinthians Pope
Pius X took his motto and from whose Epistle to the Romans
the school derives its motto, “Domini Sumus.”
Significant colors on the emblem are gold and white, the
Papal colors, and with blue, the school colors. The color red
symbolizes the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul.
To the left of the emblem is the “chi rho.” This can translate to
Pius X. Its original meaning, however, is derived from the first
two letters of the Greek word for Christ, “christos.”
2011-12 GEORGE B. MALOOF SCHOLARSHIP
Katy Gilbert
Katy is a four year participant in our Cross Country, Swim, and Track programs. Noted for
her “No Quit” attitude she has excelled in all three. In Cross Country she helped to lead the
team to the 2009 State Championship. This year she is the team captain. In Swim & Dive
she helped lead the team to a state runner-up finish last year. I n Track she has been our top
hurdler each of the last two years and was a leader on last year’s state runner-up team. The
greatest thing about Katy is that she leads by EXAMPLE. Her presence makes a difference!
Joe Crochet
Joe has been a dominant football and baseball player each of his three years at St. Pius X. In
football he is a team leader and is most noted for his “all over the field” hustle on defense. In
baseball he has been the consummate team player, doing whatever it takes to win. There is
no one in any sport who puts forth more “EFFORT” than Joe Crochet.
2010-11 SENIOR ATHLETES OF THE YEAR
Shelby Ashe
Shelby was a four year participant on the St. Pius X Track & Field team. A two-time state
champion in the shot-put and a state runner-up in the discus, she set National records and
won the Pan Am Junior Championships in the hammer throw during her time at St. Pius X.
Currently, Ashley is training for the 2012 Olympic trials, as it is her goal to represent the USA
in the hammer throw in London. She hopes to then attend Harvard University.
Rick Lewis
Rick began to make his mark on the St. Pius X lacrosse program as a freshman starting
at the Attack position. During his freshman campaign, he ranked second on the team in
scoring, was elected team captain for the following year, and received All League Honors.
As a sophomore Rick began to receive national attention as he led the Lions in scoring, was
named the team’s most valuable player, was elected captain again, and received first-team
All-State Honors. Before his junior season Rick verbally committed to top 25 Division 1 Ohio
State University. Rick’s junior year saw him once again lead St. Pius X in scoring and receive
both MVP and captain’s honors. On a state and national level Rick was named All-American
and the AJC Georgia player of the year, as well as being ranked by ESPN as one of the top
16 Midfielders in the nation. Rick officially became the Lions all-time scoring leader during his
senior year, once again earned MVP and All-American honors, and was one of three finalists
named as the Georgia Sports Council’s Athlete of the Year. After graduating Rick was invited
as one of only 150 players in the nation to try out for the U-19 USA team to compete at the
World Lacrosse Tournament in Finland during 2012.
Mr. Paetznick marched snare drum with the competitive 1992 Star of Indiana drum & bugle corps (now
