Asian American Real Estate Association
Greetings from the Asian American Real Estate Association! The AAREA has
achieved wonderful accomplishments since the name change ten years ago, from
the Greater Houston Chinese Real Estate Association, to better serve the real estate
community. With the immerging Asians to the Houston area, the Asian population
has evidenced an increase of more than 70% in population growth in the past
decade; the Association is enjoying a tremendous growth in memberships, as well
as, realizing the importance of its role in serving the Asian community and the
real estate professions. The AAREA is committed to educate, to collaborate and to
promote the Asian American real estate business and the Asian American community.
We enthusiastically embrace our short past, celebrate our present accomplishments,
and effectively plan for the future.
This year according to the Chinese zodiac sign, is the year of the Snake, also called Junior Dragon. It is the
enigmatic, intuitive, introspective, refined and collected of the Animals Signs. Ancient Chinese wisdom says a Snake
in the house is a good omen because it means that your family will not starve. People born in the Year of the Snake
are keen and cunning, quite intelligent and wise. They are great mediators and good at doing business. Therefore,
you should have good luck if you were born in the Year of the Snake. The 2013 Snake of year has ability to read
complicated situations quickly in a controlled manner which is good for business. Signing documents of any kind
requires very thorough attention. The 2013 horoscope predict it is a good year to begin important detail work.
Research and investigation are supported.
In the past year, the association offered many events and seminars to further the members’ business networking
opportunity and real estate related educational information exchange. We will continue to search for more new
resources and invite more speakers to help and strengthen our members’ growth in the year to come.
The AAREA is a volunteering inspired organization. What makes the AAREA a strong and meaningful organization
is the strong support from all of the sponsors and endless and unselfish support from the Board of Directors and
volunteers. Thanks to each of them from the bottom of my heart. We would not enjoy the great success of the
AAREA without them.
February 2013
Congratulations to the 10th Anniversary of AAREA!! As the founder and the first
president of this great association, I would like to thank Lauris Tam and the current
board, past presidents and board members, and all the sponsors to make AAREA as
one of the leading real estate organizations in Houston. Of course, the support of
the membership, the real estate professionals and the community are crucial to the
success of AAREA.
I was so fortunate to be the founder of Greater Houston Chinese Real Estate
Association (GHCREA) and Asian American Real Estate Association(AAREA) and
helped to form Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA) in Houston
and later became 2011 National Chairman of AREAA. I am truly thankful to all
my friends and local leaders to make them happen. I believe united is power that
can achieve our mission. United with other diversified groups and work with main stream to improve real estate
ownership, to built a global network with international real estate groups, to provide more benefits, education and
opportunities to our members... These are always the goals of AAREA and welcome more professionals to join us
to keep them going.
Last but least, I have to salute to the following great real estate leaders: Pius Leung, Paul Lin, Vera Lin, Melissa
Hwang, Ann Wang, Charles Chou, Dan Goon, Lauris Tam to serve as the president and to lead us to this level. Wish
we will have more leaders like them to guide us for many more 10 years in the future. Best Wish to all of you for a
prosperous and safe Year of Snake.
February 2013
At this blissful Chinese Lunar New Year season, I am delighted to offer the warmest
congratulation to the 10th anniversary of Asian American Real Estate Association.
As a past President, I had the privilege and pleasure to work with our diligent and
enthusiastic board members. We were proud to serve as a resourceful, educational
and informative platform for our members of all fields such as real estate sales, title
companies, builders, mortgage lenders, government housing programs. To meet and
reflect the rapid expansion of Asian demographics, the board successfully changed
the name from Houston Chinese Real Estate Association to Asian American Real
Estate Association. It has been a unique and one of the most robust organizations
in the community. I am confident that under the new leadership, AAREA will
continue to be a unique, robust and one of the most successful organizations in the
community.
I wish an auspicious and abundant 2013 to all our directors and members!
In Chinese and other Asian societies, a red envelope or red
packet is a monetary gift which is given during holidays or special
occasions.
It is known as hóngbao in Mandarin, angbao in Taiwanese (also
Singaporean Hokkien), angpau in Min Nan, lai see in Cantonese, lì
xì in Vietnamese and sae bae don in Korean.
Usage
Red envelopes are mainly presented at social and family gatherings
such as weddings or on holidays such as the Lunar New Year. The
red color of the envelope symbolizes good luck and is supposed to
ward off evil spirits.
The amount of money contained in the envelope usually ends with
an even digit, in accordance with Chinese beliefs; for instance 88
and 168 are both lucky numbers, as odd-numbered money gifts
are traditionally associated with funerals. Still in some regions of
China and in its diasporic community, odd-numbers are favored
for weddings because they are difficult to divide. There is also a
widespread tradition that money should not be given in fours,
or the number four should not appear in the amount, such as
in 40, 400 and 444, as the pronunciation of the word “four”
resembles that of the word “death” and thus signifies bad luck for
many Chinese (See Numbers in Chinese culture). At weddings,
the amount offered is usually intended to cover the cost of the
attendees as well as signify goodwill to the newlyweds.
During the Lunar New Year, mainly in Southern China, red
envelopes are typically given by the married to the unmarried,
most of whom are children. (In the North, money is not given in
envelopes.) The amount of money is usually a single note to avoid
heavy coins and to make it difficult to judge the amount inside
before opening. It is traditional to put brand new notes inside red
envelopes and also to avoid opening the envelopes in front of the
relatives out of courtesy.
In Vietnam, lì xì is lucky money and are typically given to children.
Red envelopes are also used to deliver payment for favorable
service to lion dance performers, religious
practitioners, teachers and doctors.
Origin
There are no clear literary sources from which to trace the origin
of the red envelope tradition. In China, during the Qin Dynasty,
Story of the Li Xi
the elderly would thread
coins with a red string. The
money was called yasuì qián
meaning “money warding off
evil spirits”, and was believed
to protect the elderly from
sickness and death. The yasuì
qián was replaced by red
envelopes when printing
presses became more
common and is now found
written using the homophone
for suì that means ‘old age’
instead of ‘evil spirits’. Red
envelopes are also referred to as yasuì qián.
Other customs
Other similar traditions also exist in other countries in Asia. In
Vietnam, red envelopes are called lì xì (similar to the Cantonese
pronunciation “lai see”) or, in some cases, phong bao mung tuoi
(happy new age envelope). In Thailand, they are known as ang pow
(the pronunciation of the Chinese characters for “red envelope”
in the Teochew dialect) or tae ea among the Chinese-Thai. In
Myanmar (Burma), the Burmese Chinese refer to them as an-pao
(Burmese: ), and South Korea’s envelopes, which are white, not
red, are called “sae bae don”.
In Japan, a monetary gift called otoshidama is given to children
by their relatives during the New Year period. However, white
envelopes are used instead, with the name of the receiver written
on its obverse. A similar practice, Shugi-bukuro, is observed for
Japanese weddings, but the envelope is folded rather than sealed,
and decorated with an elaborate bow.
In the Philippines, Chinese Filipinos exchange ang pao (from the
Hokkien pronunciation, as most tsinoy are of Hokkien descent)
during the Chinese New Year. For non-Chinese Filipinos, ang paw
(or ampaw) is an easily recognisable symbol of the Lunar New
Year. Some Filipinos have already appropriated this custom for
other occasions such as birthdays, and more specifically, in giving
the aguinaldo during Christmas.
2013 Horoscope: Aries (March 21 - April 19)
Congratulations To
Asian American Real
Estate Association on Your
10th Annual Spring Gala
281-741-4846
2013 amps up the themes of finance, sexuality, debt and change
as Saturn prepares to overhaul this house of your horoscope until
2015. The good news is that you shall no longer feel all of the
stress and strain (or dry spell) around relationships as you have
since late 2009. The door is wide open to meet someone new
or totally transform an existing relationship. The key words are
depth, passion and intensity. Are you ready to get more intimate
with your self and others than ever? If you’ve ever considered
some kind of depth process like psychoanalysis, this is the year to
plummet your own unfathomable depths, Aries. You have probably
only scratched the tip of the iceberg when it comes to unleashing
your true powers, resourcefulness and regenerative powers. Have
you secretly wondered what you are truly made of at your core of
cores? Get ready to find out. This is also an excellent time to pay
off any debt: both emotionally and financially. Uranus continues to
energize your stars and promote the rebellious side of your nature.
You refuse to dance to anyone’s beat but your very own. Last
year’s challenging cardinal climax brought considerable tension
to your life -- especially around career, and some of the fall-out
from any of that wreckage is still being integrated and renovated
into the new and improved version of home and career possibility.
The brave and risky moves you took in
2012 can take deeper root this year as you
pour your passion and perserverance into
making your dreams a powerhouse of a
reality. By mid-year, you’ll have the power
of Jupiter working to expand your life
from the ground up. You may be looking
for a bigger home or just ready to take your life to a new level.
No more playing small and safe. Get ready to experience your
true potential for fame and fortune, Aries. There is a reason the
Sun shines most brightly in your stars. The eclipse patterns for
2013 will greatly impact the financial houses of your horoscope.
You are learning powerful lessons in the money department as you
develop greater resourcefulness and business savvy. You will never
again question your true value nor will you accept anything less
than what you know you are worth. This is a time to up the ante
and rake in the level of compensation you deserve. You are also
more willing and able to get grounded in the reality of your bank
balance and strategically devise better ways to remove debt and
improve your sense of security for long-term stability.
Whitney Bank
and you.
At Whitney Bank, we are committed to building
a lasting relationship with our customers based
on strong personal service. A relationship that
will stand the test of time. In the future, you can
look forward to continued strength, increased
2013 Horoscope: Taurus (April 20 - May 20)
2013 Horoscope: Gemeni (May 21 - June 21)
2013 brings the kind of emotional stability and depth you’ve been
craving for years. Now that Saturn has finally moved out of your
work and health sector for good, you will feel a great weight lift
off your shoulders with the burden of daily demands and neverending
deadlines. Now you can rightly direct your attention to
the relam of relationships. Saturn has moved into your opposite
constellation (Scorpio) until 2015 and promises to reveal your
missing other half both within and without. Your commitments
to others will deepen and you will come to realize how much
you truly value your loved ones. Never again will you take any of
your signifcant others for granted. Relationships are your endall-be-all
in 2013. Saturn will show you which ones are worth
hanging onto and which ones you have outgrown. No longer will
you tolerate relationships that only prove to be a dead-end. The
South Node of the Moon brings a series of eclipses in your sign
this year, Taurus. That spells great change and letting go of any
outworn attachments and stagnation across the board. Change
comes hard if ever in the life of a steadfast and loyal bull, but
alas this is your year to let go, let go, let go. Your life and your
relationships in particular will undergo
great transformation from the ground
level, up. Be prepared to tear it all down
and start from ash. You are about to learn
powerful lessons in how resourceful and
resilient you can be when you finally
relinquish your need to possess and
control. Money is always essential in the life of security-loving
Taurus, but in 2013 it will take on even greater significance. You
are learning how important it is to cultivate resourcefulness rather
than just working yourself to the bone. Trading dollars for hours
is no longer a viable working formula for you. You’ve got to start
tapping into your business brain so that your money makes money
for you, and you can spend more time doing what you do best:
creating beauty for yourself and others. You’ve more than paid
your dues over the past few years, and you’re more than ready to
free up your time. You’ve come to learn the hard way that this is in
fact your most valuable resource. You can recover most things, but
time that is lost is lost forever.
2012 brought you so many relationship lessons, your head may
still be spinning as you move into the dark and transformative
waters of 2013. Chances are, you have finally decided whether you
are in or out (although the inner dialogue and debate is eternal).
Now you are being called to go deeper into your experience of
commitment and intimacy. Of course, you’re known to favor the
shallow end, Gemini, but you’ll be surprised at how much you
crave the depths this year. You are willing to put in the hard work
and do whatever it takes to make your life more solid, stable and
secure than ever before. Even if this seems to go against your
ever changeable nature, you’ll find great comfort in consistency
over the next few years. Saturn, the cosmic taskmaster, is taking
up long-term residence in your zone of health and work until
2015. The more energy you put into your current projects and
daily duties, the greater the reward. You’re learning the value of
patience, perseverence and hard work. Finding the proper balance
between work and health is also a theme that comes into sharp
focus. How well are you taking care of yourself? You may find
yourself drawn to a more austere, sensible
and -- yes -- healthy lifestyle now. Eating
to live, instead of living to eat, becomes
a viable theme. In order to keep up the
energy to support the heaps of projects
you’ve got brewing (as per usual), you’ll
need to make sure your health and vitality
are top notch. Embracing a healthy lifestyle makes everything
possible and keeps your life running like a well-oiled machine.
You’ll be thrilled to hear that the winds of change are finally dying
down as the last two plus years of crazy eclipse patterns in your
sign are finished. The dust is finally getting ready to settle and you
can begin a potent building phase in your life. Making time for
your inner world, spirituality and self-inquiry becomes a necessity
rather than a luxury now. Carve out time to sleep, dream, write,
draw, journal or whatever it is that your soul needs to thrive
during such a busy and productive time. You will need this in order
to balance your heavy workload.
2013 Horoscope: Cancer (June 22 - July 22)
2013 Horoscope: Leo (July 23 - August 22)
Get ready for a year of fabulous expansion, sweetness and love
galore, Cancer. This summer, lucky Jupiter is moving into your
constellation to bring amazing opportunity and expansion to
your world -- all the way into 2014! You’ve been preparing for
the breakthrough and surge in success, so you’ll be more than
ready to take your rightful place in the limelight. All areas of your
life receive the benefits and blessings of Jupiter for the second
half of 2013. Your confidence is sky high and you feel more
optimistic about life and your future than you have in ages. All of
the suffering, heaviness and loss of 2012 will quickly become a
thing of the past as you embrace the amazing opportunities being
showered upon you in 2013. 2012 had you face some very deep
fears steeped in your childhood. Family issues and wounds from
childhood were the challenges you had to face. It wasn’t easy but
it brought a tremendous amount of inner strength in its wake.
Rest assured, this new phase takes you out of the past and into
the world of love, romance and creativity. You’re being asked to
put considerable time into pursuing your
heart’s desire -- without exception. If
you can structure time for what you love,
your life will be infinitely more rewarding
than it has been in years. The depression
is definitely lifting and you are willing to
embrace the sweet life once again. The
potent and life-changing eclipse patterns that brought so much
loss in 2012 have changed signs and will now be working on
your romance and social zones. You’ll feel incredible change and
momentum with friends and lovers. Your goal is stability, and in
order to achieve this you’ll have to make some tough decisions
about who stays in the boat and who needs to be kicked out for
good. Your nostalgic nature makes it challenging to let go -- even
when it’s for your own good. Trust that better people will replace
the crazy makers.
Get ready to dig deeply in 2013, Leo. You’re going into a phase of
complete and total metamorphosis. This will require considerable
self-analysis and probing into your past patterns, but all the work
will be more than worth it. You’re on the verge of discovering
just how powerful, strong and resilient you are at your very core.
If you have ever doubted your strength, after 2013 you’ll never
question your resourcefulness again. Saturn, the great karmic lord
of trials and tribulations, will be camping out at the base of your
horoscope until 2015, so you’ll have plenty of time to delve into
the depths. Family issues and psychological patterns inherited
from your parents will come to the surface this year, making your
more aware of -- and able to avoid -- negative patterns. Wake up,
Leo! Get ready for a major rebirth. Lucky Jupiter will continue to
bring good fortune to your social sector and help you dream big
until June. You’ve been so blessed with the amazing people you’ve
met over the past year who have helped
you reach your goals. The second half of
the year, you may want to pull back when
Jupiter enters your retreat zone. This is
a time of dreaming and scheming before
launching into the next chapter of your
life in 2014. So the first half of the year
will continue to be incredibly social, but give yourself permission
to come back to a more internal and creative space during the
latter part of 2013. The eclipse patterns of 2013 will shake up
both home and career sectors, so get ready for rapid advance and
decline in both arenas. Don’t get too attached to any of the gains
or losses in either of these life departments, as they will constantly
be in flux until you reach a healthy middle ground -- and you will!
2013 Horoscope: Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
2013 Horoscope: Libra (September 23 - October 22)
2013 brings you sweeping change and intensity, Virgo. The
biggest transformation takes place in the realm of the mind.
Communication, correspondence and courses of new study carry
great importance. Saturn, the cosmic taskmaster, is spending a
good chunk of time in the sector of your chart ruling the mental
realms and communication. If you’re not already a powerful
public speaker, teacher or writer, get ready to discover your latent
potential to sway the masses with your power of speech! You’re
also hungry for knowledge in 2013, and will want to strengthen
your skill set and beef up your resume with even more knowledge
than you possess naturally. Jupiter continues to bring the potential
for great promise and recognition to your career zone this year.
Prepare to push all of your projects most strongly during the
first half of the year while you have the support of Jupiter. The
second half of the year will be better spent socializing and creating
community. You’ll be more interested in
meeting new people than promoting your
work. Get ready to meet amazing and
passionate folks who will remain in your
life for years to come. The eclipse patterns
stir up endings and new beginnings in
relation to siblings, travel and legal issues.
Siblings or close relatives could become a source of strain, and
you’ll have to create firm boundaries. In fact, boundaries in all
realms of communication will serve you to avoid overload. Your
life is about to become ridiculously busy and filled with more
people than you know what to do with. At the end of the day,
you’re still a hermit at heart and need plenty of alone time, so
be sure to carve that out regardless of how social your world
becomes.
2013 brings you nothing short of a total rebirth, Libra. You can
finally bid farewell to the heavy and austere presence of Saturn in
your stars since late 2009. You have had enough lessons in love and
commitment to last you a lifetime. Now you’re ready to put those
lessons to the test by pursuing your true calling and passion. No
longer will you be satisfied with simply scratching the surface of
life. You’re prepared to go as deep as necessary to create something
of lasting value. You want nothing less than the truth, and nothing
short of profound meaning. You’ll be putting more attention and
importance on finances than you have in a long time now that
Saturn has moved on to your money zone. This is the year to
finally work on a budget and devise sound economic strategies
for increasing your income without working yourself to the
bone. This is an excellent time to get out of debt as much as you
possibly can so that you can save your pennies for the whirlwind of
change on deck in 2013. The eclipses will
rock your money sectors, so be prepared
for sweeping gains and losses, and plan
accordingly. You’ll continue to break out
of any codependent relationship ruts with
the ongoing influence of Pluto and Uranus
sparring in the cosmos. You’ve certainly
learned how important it is to value your authenticity and
independence in all of your dealings with others. No longer will
you fall prey to being too nice. You see how crucial it is to set your
limits, draw your lines in the sand and commit without wavering.
Saturn taught you to get off the fence and take a firm stand. This is
how you gain respect. Your diplomacy and charm will always serve
you well, but you realize now that they must be backed by the iron
fist in the velvet glove.
2013 Horoscope: Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)
2013 Horoscope: Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
2013 has your name written all over it, Scorpio. Thirteen is the
number of the Death archetype in the tarot card attributed to
your sign. It’s about the death of the outworn aspects of yourself
and your life, while the sunrise of rebirth is always waiting
on the horizon. Transformation, metamorphosis, passion and
sexuality are all heavily pronounced this year for you. Saturn,
the great taskmaster, has taken up long-term residency in your
stars until 2015 to give you and your life a complete makeover.
Add to this the fact that your ruler, Pluto, is in what is known as
a ‘mutual reception’ with Saturn (mutual influence by means of
swapping signs) and the force for rebuilding your life from its very
foundation is doubled. This is a year for uncovering your greatest
resourcefulness, and relinquishing any skeletons from your psychic
closet. Death and rebirth become daily themes as you shed layers
upon layers of the former you. The speed at which your life is
moving, evolving and changing is unprecedented, Scorpio. The
total whirlwind that began in the latter half of 2012 continues as
the eclipse points impact your sign directly. Watch for key events
in May and November as signposts for more change to come.
There’s a good chance you’ll change jobs,
move, start or end a relationship or simply
start an entirely new chapter of your life
under this intense influence. Trust that
whatever you’re putting your passionate
energy into this year will indeed build out
to something lasting and beautiful. This
could easily be one of the most exhilarating and spiritual years in
a long time, Scorpio. Jupiter supports your quest for deep change
and self-awareness by working on the Eighth House (Scorpio
sector) of your horoscope until June. Delve into your own secret
depths and discover how powerful you really are. Few are as
tough and resilient as you are. It’s actually your sensitivity and
vulnerability that make you strong. At the end of the day, you may
be the most emotionally courageous sign there is. You heal others
by showing them that it’s safe to confront their own darkness
as you have done. This is the greatest gift and strength you’ll be
sharing with many in 2013.
If there was ever a time in your life when you wished for a very
extended vacation, it’s 2013, Sag. The longing for a break from
the rat race and constant hustle has never been so overwhelming.
You started having fantasies of what it would be like to live your
life totally surrounded by tranquility, nature or, better yet, 24-
hour room service in a posh hotel. The idea of being taken care
of is ridiculously enticing as Saturn and the North Node of the
Moon take root in your retreat zone this year. If you can’t totally
break away from the responsibilities of life, at least plan to book
as many moments in solitude as possible. You’ll need regular
getaways to cope. Jupiter continues to bless your relationship
and social sector this year until June. This brings wonderful luck
and benefits through your close associations with others and will
also bless partnerships. If you’re in a long-term relationship you
may experience incredible breakthroughs and wisdom during the
first half of the year. If you’re single, this could be an incredible
opportunity to meet someone you can finally look up to. In any
case, you’ll not find yourself lonely or
wanting for company under Jupiter’s
abundant influence in your partner
zone. The second half of the year brings
tremendous resourcefulness as Jupiter
moves into your sector of other peoples’
money, sexuality and transformation.
Change feels better than ever, so be willing to let go of all that no
longer serves your highest. You’re simply making way for the new.
The more you let go, the more new channels of abundance can
flow to you. The universe wants to help you, so don’t be afraid to
ask for what you need. You’ll be utterly amazed at the earth angels
that step forward to help you this year. You may come into some
unexpected money through an inheritance or a gift before the
end of 2013. This is an excellent year to get out of any lingering
debt. You’ll have the means to dig yourself out and make all-things
financial right again.
2013 Horoscope: Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)
2013 Horoscope: Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)
Get ready for the deepest structural changes of your life --
ever. You’re becoming the master at tearing down the old and
rebuilding from scratch, and yet you may be amazed to discover
there is indeed another, much deeper layer to uncover. Just
when you thought your world could not possibly survive yet
more gutting, along comes the mutual reception between Saturn
and Pluto directly impacting your sign. Pluto rules irreversible,
you-are-never-going-back change, while Saturn (your planetary
ruler) is all about death, rebirth and total transformation. You get
the gist: nothing will ever be the same, so close your eyes, take
a deep breath and let go. On the other side of the wrecking ball
is a beautiful life in total alignment with your true value system
making the necessary sacrifices more than worth it. You have
nothing to fear, because all of the changes will pave the way to
such profound improvement, you’ll look back and wonder why
you ever held on to such a sham of a world in the first place. Your
daily life -- work, health and overall well-being -- will get an extra
boost from Jupiter during the first half of the year. This means
you can kick it up a notch by taking such good care of yourself
that you’ll have more energy than the
gods! This is also an excellent time for
getting your daily regimen working like a
well-oiled machine. Eating right, getting
enough sleep and making time for regular
exercise are all essential in 2013. The
second half of the year brings the luck of
Jupiter to your relationship and social zone. No longer shall you
be tired or lonely. Your love life and social world will be dripping
in goodness and abundance. Don’t expect much solitude in 2013.
Your social world is about to blow up -- as is your love life. The
eclipse points will be activating your love and social sectors,
assuring that you’ll have very little, if any, time or space to feel
isolated. Friends and lovers will be flocking to you like a magnet.
The only problem is that you may feel like you’re neglecting your
career responsibilities, but how can you turn down all the fun? All
work and no play makes Capricorn a dull Goat! It’s rare that you
have so many invites hitting you simultaneously -- enjoy!
2013 is the year when all of your hard work starts to truly pay off
in spades. Saturn, the cosmic taskmaster, is taking up residence at
the tip top of your horoscope for the next few years, giving you
the make-it-or-break-it impetus to get the job done right. You’ve
been biding your time over the past few years, collecting the
necessary research and finding a slew of inspiring mentors. Now is
your chance to finally get your genius concepts on the map where
they belong. Yours has been a slow-and-steady climb rather than a
meteoric rise to the top, thus you’ve built a rock-solid foundation
to carry your dreams through with serious staying power. Your
success is anything but a flash-in-the-pan. Over the next two years,
you’ll continue to work hard to build on earlier accomplishments
and integrate all that you started investing in since 2000. Not only
do you have the power of Saturn at full strength in your career
zone for the next few years, but the mutual reception between
Saturn and Pluto will quickly make you a triple-threat genius.
Watch as all your latent talents quickly come rushing to the fore.
The eclipse patterns of 2013 add speed and force to the career
promise that the stars have in store for you. The push of the North
Node provides a definite if not unexpected fast-forward motion
to any projects that have been on the back burner. Get ready
for supreme acceleration with worldly
status -- and life changes galore. Your
home zone will also get hit by the eclipse
patterns, which could generate a change
of residence or just a total renovation
to your existing domicile. Either way,
you’re getting ready for the kind of lifealtering
transformation that works on you from the ground up.
The pleasure cruise that began last summer will continue straight
through until June as Jupiter continues to bless your love zone.
Romance, creativity and sheer joy are in great abundance during
the first half of the year. Use the good fortune of Jupiter in your
love house to spend most of your days doing what you love most
with those you adore most. If your life feels more like play than
responsibility, you’re living well and in accordance with the stars.
You can get down to business during the second half of the year
when Jupiter shifts houses and brings the bounty to your work and
health house in June. The latter part of the year will keep you busy,
so allow yourself the pleasure before the workload starts piling
up. 2013 is the perfect balance of business and leisure for you,
Story of the Lion Dance
Lion dance is a form of traditional dance in Chinese culture,
in which performers mimic a lion’s movements in a lion
costume. The lion dance is often mistakenly referred to as
dragon dance. An easy way to tell the difference is that a
lion is operated by two people, while a dragon needs many
people. Also, in a lion dance, the performers’ faces are
covered, since they are inside the lion. In a dragon dance, the
performers can be seen since the dragon is held upon poles.
Basic lion dance fundamental movements can be found in
most Chinese martial arts.
Chinese Northern Lion
The Chinese Northern Lion Dances are usually performed
appear in pairs in the north China. Northern lions have
shaggy orange and yellow hair with a red bow on its head to
indicate a male lion, or a green bow to represent a female.
During a performance, northern lions resemble Pekingese or
Fu Dogs and movements are very lifelike. Acrobatics are very
common, with stunts like lifts or balancing on a giant ball.
Northern lions sometimes appear as a family, with two large
“adult” lions and a pair of small “young lions”. Ninghai, in
Ningbo, is called the “Homeland of the Lion Dance” for the
northern variety.
Chinese Southern Lion
The Chinese Southern Lion dance originated from
Guangdong, the homeland of the Chinese southern style
lion. The Chinese southern horned lions are believed to be
Nians.
The Guangdong’s or Cantonese style can be further divided
into Fut San (Buddha Mountain), Hok san (Crane Style),
Fut-Hok (minor style that exhibits a hybrid of Fut San and
Hok San), Jow Ga (minor style performed by practitioners
of Jow family style kung fu, exampled by the Wong People),
and the Green Lion (Qing1 Shi1 - popular with the Fukien/
Hokkien and Taiwanese).
The styles of lion dance do vary widely, but the lion head
designs exhibit greater differences. The traditional Fo Shan
lion has bristles instead of fur and weighs more than the
current in-fashion ones. The tails are extremely long and
are perpendicular to the head for three fourths of the tail’s
length, then it goes parallel to the head. The eyes also swivel
left and right. On the back
there are gold foiled rims
and traditional characters
saying the troupe’s name.
Older Liu Bei lions also
have black in the tail while
the new ones do not. The
Gwan Gung has a red and
black tail with white trim.
The Huang Joon has a full
yellow tail with white trim.
The Zhang Fei has a black
and white tail with white
trim and a white underside.
The Zhao Zi Long lion is a green lion with a green tail with
black trim and also a white underside. All the traditional
style Fo Shan have pop-up teeth, tongue, swivelling eyes, and
a gold gilded area on the back for the school’s name and also
the underside of the tail is white; the designs of the tail are
also more square and contain a diamond pattern going down
the back; it is also common to see and hear bells attached to
the tail. Although most lion dance costumes comes with a
set of matching pants, some practitioners use black Kung-Fu
pants to look more traditional. The Wong people perform
the lion dance using this type of lion. The newer styles of
lions for Fo Shan replace all the bristles with fur and the
tails are shorter. They eyes are fixed in place, and the tongue
and teeth do not pop up. The tail is more curvy in design.
The tail does not have a diamond pattern, and lacks bells.
In addition, the dancers wear flashier pants which lack the
ease of movement allowed when wearing Kung-Fu pants.
Sometimes the newer versions use a sequin material over the
traditional lacquer; even the new lacquer is shinier and does
not last as long while the heavier ones do last longer with
semi-dull lacquer. Recently, lion dance costumes are made
very durable and some are even waterproof. Newer lions are
made with modern materials such as an aluminium and laser
stickers for the outer designs, while the traditional ones use
bamboo and more durable layered cloth.
Fo Shan is the style many Kung Fu schools adopt. It requires
powerful moves and strength in stance. The lion becomes
the representation of the Kung Fu school and only the most
advanced students are allowed to perform.
The He Shan style lion, popular in many places, has grown to
fame because of its richness of expression, unique footwork,
magnificent-looking appearance and vigorous drumming
style. The credit should go to the founder, the “Canton
Lion King” ( Feng Geng Zhang). According to records, was
born in a village in He Shan county. His father was a secular
disciple of the Shaolin Temple, and instructed him in martial
arts and lion dance at an early age. Later, he further studied
martial arts and Southern lion dance in Fuo Shan with fellow
villager 冯 了 性 (a famous physician and the creator of this dance),
before returning to his hometown and setting up his own
training hall, teaching and researching the art of lion dance
with great devotion. Given his considerable martial ability, a
result of hard and dedicated training, he was able to develop
a unique and outstanding version of lion dance. was not only
able to carry on the art, he was also particularly involved
in creating new techniques through mimicking. Together
with his junior, he kept cats and studied their behaviour
carefully; they were eventually able to incorporate from
the “cat and mouse game” the various movements such as
“Catching mouse, playing, catching birds, high escape, lying
low and rolling”. They also made changes to the body of
the Fo Shan lion, making it more well-built and powerful in
structure, but with agile footwork and eye-catching colors,
and played to the rhythm of the “Seven Star Drums”. In
short, in terms of expression, dance steps, build of the lion
and the drumming style, he created a whole new style of
lion dancing which was considered high in entertainment
value and visual appeal. There are many important points
which also prove 冯 庚 ⻓ 长 to have been the chief figure responsible
for the creation of the He Shan style of lion dance. In the
early 1920s, the He Shan lion dance was performed at Sun
Yat-Sen’s assuming office in Guangzhou, creating quite a
sensational stir both within and outside of the province.
Around 1945, He Shan lion performers were often invited
to perform in many places within China and Southeast Asia
during many celebratory festivals. The He Shan style was
strongly favoured and sensational in Singapore, having been
featured in many nationwide events, even gaining the title
of “Lion King of Kings”, with wide press coverage by both
Chinese and English media. The noble bearing of the He
Shan lion is still promoted as a tourist attraction in Singapore
today, with a large banner featuring this style being placed
on the tourist attraction of Sentosa. Today’s He Shan lions are
the same as those created by improvising on the Fo Shan lion;
it is of a powerful and impressive build, with a “ 王 ” character
on its forehead and a confident expression, and combined
with the unique invention of, the “Seven Star Drum”, the
He shan lion displays a formidable show of power. When the
Fo Shan lion dance was brought to Singapore, a lot of works
have been done to make the lion more “ cat-like”. Master
Ho Kai Seng of Singapore He Shan Association shortened
the tail of He Shan lion so that it looks more like a cat. And
master Liang Zhao Fu, who is wildly known as South-east
Asia drum king, created Fo Shan 18 beats and devised a way
to play the drum with not just rhythms but also gusto. The
He Shan drum nowadays is composed by master Lu Xin Yao
of Singapore He Shan Association.
There is three important and the first colors of the lions.
The lion with the white colored fur is considered to be the
oldest of the lions. The lion with the goldish yellowish fur is
the considered to be the middle child. Not the youngest or
the oldest. And the black colored lion is considered to be the
youngest lion so when people use this colour lion it should
move fast and quick like a young child.
When the dancing lion enters a village or township, it is
supposed to pay its respects first at the local temple(s), then
to the ancestors at the ancestral hall, and finally through
the streets to bring happiness to all the people. There are
three types of lions: the golden lion, representing liveliness;
the red lion, representing courage; and the green lion,
representing friendship.
Three other famous lion types can also be identified: Liu Bei,
Guan Gong (Cantonese: Kwan Kung) and Zhang Fei. They
represent historic characters in China that were recorded
in the classic, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. These three
were blood oath brothers that swore to restore the Han
dynasty.
The Liu Bei (Cantonese: Lau Pei) lion is the eldest of the
three brothers and has a yellow (actually imperial yellow
as he became the first emperor of the Shu-Han Kingdom)
based face with white beard and fur (to denote his wisdom).
It sports a multi coloured tail (white underside) with black
as one of them which encompasses the colors of the five
elements, as it was believed that being the Emperor, he
had the blessings of the heavens and thus control of the
five elements. There are three coins on the collar. This lion
is used by schools with an established “Sifu” (Martial art
master) or organization and is known Rui shih (Shui Shi) or
The Auspicious Lion.
The Guan Gong (Cantonese: Kwan Kung) lion has a red
based face, black bristles, with a long black beard (as he was
also known as the “Duke with the Beautiful Beard”). The tail
is red and black with white trim and a white underside. He
is known as the second brother and sports two coins on the
collar. This Lion is known as Hsing Shih (Shing Shi) or the
Awakened Lion. This lion is generally used by most.
The Zhang Fei (Cantonese: Cheung Fei) lion has a black
based face with short black beard, small ears, and black
bristles. The tail is black and white with white trim and
a white underside. Traditionally this lion also had bells
attached to the body, which served as a warning like a rattler
on a rattle snake. Being the youngest of the three brothers,
there is a single coin on the collar. This Lion is known as
the Fighting Lion because Zhang Fei had a quick temper
and loved to fight. This lion is used by clubs that were just
starting out or by those wishing to make a challenge.
Later an additional three Lions were added to the group. The
Green faced lion represented Zhao Yun or Zhao (Cantonese:
Chiu) Zi Long. He has a green tail with white beard and
fur and an iron horn. He is often called the fourth brother,
this lion is called the Heroic Lion because it is said he rode
through Cao Cao’s million man army and rescued Liu Bei’s
infant and fought his way back out. The Yellow (yellow/
orange) face and body with white beard represented Huang
Zhong (Cantonese: Wong Tsung), we was given this color
when Liu Bei rose to become Emperor. This lion is called the
Righteous Lion. The white colour lion is known as Ma Chao
(Cantonese: Ma Chiu), he was assigned this color because he
always wore a white arm band to battle against the Emperor
of Wei, Cao Cao, to signify that he was in mourning for his
father and brother who had been murdered by Cao Cao. Thus
this lion was known as the funeral lion. This lion is never
used except for a funeral for the Sifu or some important
head of the group, and in such cases it is usually burned right
after. Even if it is properly stored, it is not something one
would want to keep, as it is symbolically inauspicious to have
around. It is sometimes though, confused with the silver
lion which sometimes has a white like colouring. These three
along with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei were known as the “Five
Tiger Generals of Shun,” each representing one of the colors
of the five elements.
Japanese Lion
Festival of Miyazaki Shrine, Japan also has a tradition of lion
dance throughout the nation, dancing in pace with the music.
Known in Japanese as “Shishi-mai,” the roots of the Japanese
lion dance are said to be from China. The style of dancing
and design of the lion differs by region. The lion dance has
been completely absorbed into Japanese tradition and is
used even in religious Shinto festivals aside from new year
celebrations.
The Japanese lion consists of a wooden, lacquered head
called a “shishi-gashira” (lit. Lion Head), and a characteristic
body of green dyed cloth with white designs. It can be
manipulated by a single person, or two people, one who
manipulates the head. As with Chinese lions, the make of
the head and designs on the body will differ from region to
region, and even from school to school. In Okinawa, a similar
dance exists, though the lion there is considered to be a
legendary shisa. The heads, bodies and behavior of the shisa
in the dance are quite different than the shishi on mainland
Japan. Instead of dancing to the sounds of flutes and drums,
the Okinawan shisa dance is often performed to folk songs
played with the sanshin.
Music and instruments
Lion Dance is performed accompanied by the music
of beating of drums, cymbals, and gongs instruments
synchronise to the lion dance movements and actions. The
recent development of an application played on iPhone/
iPad/iPod touch to play lion dance instruments has
contributed to the evolution of how people can play lion
dance music.
Costumes
The lion dance costumes used in these performances can
only be custom made in speciality craft shops in rural parts
of China and have to be imported at considerable expense
for most foreign countries outside Asia. For groups in
Western countries, this is made possible through funds raised
through subscriptions and pledges made by members of local
cultural and business societies. For countries like Malaysia
with a substantial Chinese population, local expertise may
be available in making the “lion” costumes and musical
instruments without having to import them from China.
Association with wushu/kung fu
The lion dance has close relations to Kung Fu or Wushù and
the dancers are usually martial art members of the local
kung fu club or school. They practice in their club and some
train hard to master the skill as one of the disciplines of the
martial art. In general, it is seen that if a school has a capable
troupe with many ‘lions’, it demonstrates the success of the
school. It is also generally practised together with Dragon
dance in some area.
During Chinese New Years and festivals
During the Chinese New Year, lion dancer troupes from the
Chinese martial art schools or Chinese guild and associations
will visit the houses and shops of the Chinese community to
perform the traditional custom of “cai ching” , literally means
“plucking the greens”, a quest by the ‘lion’ to pluck the
auspicious green normally ‘vegetables’ like lettuce which in
Chinese called ‘cái’ that sound like ‘cái’(fortune) and
auspicious fruit like oranges tied to a “Red Envelope”
containing money; either hang highly or just put on a table
in front of the premises. The “lion” will dance and approach
the “green” and “red evelope” like a curious cat, to “eat the
green” and “spit” it out leave it in a nice arrangement, like
an auspicious character but keep the “red envelope”. The
lion dance is believed to bring good luck and fortune to the
business and the troupe is rewarded with the “red envelope”.
Different types of vegetables, fruits, foods or utensils
with auspicious and good symbolic meanings; for instance
pineapples, pamelos, bananas, oranges, sugar cane shoots,
coconuts, beer, clay pots or even crabs can be used to be
the “greens” to be “plucked” to give different difficulty and
challenge for the lion dance performers. But the difficulties
of the challenge should comes with the bigger the rewards of
the “red envelope” given.
The lion dance, sometimes along with the dragon dance,
is also usually performed at many other important grand
occasions, including Chinese traditional, cultural and
religious festivals, business opening events, birthday
celebrations, honour guest welcoming and wedding
ceremonies by the Chinese communities.
In the old days, the lettuce was hung 15 to 20 feet above
ground and only a well-trained martial artist could reach
the money while dancing with a heavy lion head. These
events became a public challenge. A large sum of money
was rewarded, and the audience expected a good show.
Sometimes, if lions from multiple martial arts schools
approached the lettuce at the same time, the lions are
supposed to fight to decide a winner. The lions had to fight
with stylistic lion moves instead of chaotic street fighting
styles. The audience would judge the quality of the martial
art schools according to how the lions fought. Since the
schools’ reputation were at stake, the fights were usually
fierce but civilized. The winner lion would then use creative
methods and martial art skills to reach the high-hanging
reward. Some lions may dance on bamboo stilts and some
may step on human pyramids formed by fellow students of
the school. The performers and the schools would gain praise
and respect on top of the large monetary reward when they
did well. Nowadays, performances to attain the red envelope
are not as rigorous but lion dance troupes still have the
onus of making a good show or face the consequence of an
unhappy client.
During the 1950s-60s, in some areas with high population
of Chinese and Asian communities especially the Chinatown
in many foreign countries abroad China in the world; people
who joined lion dance troupes were “gangster-like” and there
was a lot of fighting amongst lion dance troupes and kung
fu schools. Parents were afraid to let their children join lion
dance troupes because of the “gangster” association with the
members. During festivals and performances, when lion
dance troupes met, there would be fights between groups.
Some lifts and acrobatic tricks are designed for the lion to
“fight” and knock over other rival lions. Performers even
hid daggers in their shoes and clothes, which could be used
to injure other lion dancers’ legs, or even attached a metal
horn on their lion’s forehead, which could be used to slash
other lion heads. The violence got so extreme that at one
point, the Hong Kong government had to put a stop to lion
dance completely. Now, as with many other countries, lion
dance troupes must attain a permit from the government in
order to perform lion dance. Although there is still a certain
degree of competitiveness, troupes are a lot less violent
and aggressive. Today, lion dance is a more sport-oriented
activity. Lion dance is more for recreation than a way of
living. But there are still plenty of troupes who still practice
the traditional ways and taboos of the lion dance as it is
practiced in the past.
In popular culture
In the 1960s and 1970s, during the era when the Hong
Kong’s Chinese classic and martial arts movies are very
popular, Kung fu movies including Jet Li’s “Wong Fei Hung”
has actually indirectly shows and indicates how lion dance
was practised with the Kung fu close co-relation and Kung
fu during that time. Those days, the lion dance was mostly
practised and perform as Wushu or Kung fu skills, with the
challenge for the ‘lion’ built of chairs and tables stack up
together for the ‘lions’ to perform its stunts and accomplish
its challenge.
Several 1990s movies, including a remade version of “Wong
Fei Hung”, and the sequels of Once Upon a Time in China,
involve plots centered on Lion Dancing, especially Once
Upon a Time in China III and IV. The series main actor, Jet
Li has performed as a lion dancer in several of his films,
Evolution and competition
Lion dance has spread across the world courtesy of the
local Chinese community and immigrant settlers located at
different Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, Pacific and Australia
continents and countries worldwide including South East
Asia’s Malaysia.
It has evolved a lot since the early days when it was perform
as a skill part of martial arts of Wushu and grown into a
more artistic arts and skill which take into accounts the lion’s
expression and the natural movements beside the acrobatic
styles and skills during performances. This was apply during
whether it is performed as a cultural performances or as a
stunt during competitions. This evolution and development
has eventually lead to the modern form of lion dances
and the new lion dances on the stilts competition based
on the best skilled and most lively “lion” coupled with the
most creative stunts, choreographed moves, acrobatics
difficulties and heart-throbbing rhythmic and pulsating live
instrument music to captivate spectators and the judges in
the competitions.
It is said and recognized that the Malaysian influence and
efforts all this while has contributed a lot to the popularity
of the practice and performances of the form of lion dance
on stilts that turn the lion dances into a more interesting
and attractive popular arts. Most of the lion dance world
championships were held in Malaysia with its representing
troupes winning most if not all the championship thanks to
the great efforts and initiatives by the Chinese community
that creates many lion dance experts, performers and fan.
