results from conventional analysis techniques. Additionally, research efforts for<br />
examining the integration <strong>of</strong> multi-design optimization, system dynamics models,<br />
<strong>and</strong> real options to the methodologies is critical for extending the applications <strong>of</strong><br />
the frameworks.<br />
2. What are the applications <strong>of</strong> the ESM methodology? Bartolomei (2007)<br />
suggested that the ESM methodology may be able to augment the development <strong>of</strong><br />
system architectectures such as the Department <strong>of</strong> Defense Architecture<br />
Framework (DoDAF). <strong>MIT</strong>RE has more recently exp<strong>and</strong>ed this effort <strong>and</strong><br />
continues to correlate the information residing in the ESM to the individual views<br />
<strong>of</strong> the DoDAF. Furthermore, new research to determine the ability to scale<br />
engineering systems <strong>and</strong> identify real options for flexibility continues to mature.<br />
