Later 'Azazel will supplant Semihazah, or else 'A^a'el (above, p. 131), in his capacity as chief<br />

<strong>of</strong> the fallen angels. This tradition, well known through later Christian and Jewish sources,<br />

already appears in a Hebrew text from Qumrin, 4QI8O i 7-8 {DJD v, p. 78 and pi. XXVII).<br />

I restore the missing part, in agreement with Strugnell, drawing on Gen. 6: 4 and on 4QI8I 2 2:<br />

*[And] explanation concerning 'Azaz'el and the angels who [went in to [. . •] ^KTTS7 ^S71<br />

the daughters <strong>of</strong> men ^and] they bore them giants, and concerning 'Azaz'el [. . .].* Cf. above,<br />

249-51. Note that our fragment already uses the Biblical orthography ^TXTS7, whilst the<br />

Hebrew manuscript <strong>of</strong> 4Q writes more correctly ^XTTS7, *God is powerful'.<br />
