'[3... I have shown myself more] powerful. And by the might <strong>of</strong> my sturdy<br />

arm and by the strength <strong>of</strong> my power,^ [I had attacked] all flesh and I have<br />

made war with them. But [I] not 5[. . . and] I do not find any support( ?) to<br />

strengthen (me), for my accusers ^[. . .] they dwell in [heaven]s and they<br />

live in the holy abodes, and [I ^will] not [win my cause( ?)], for they are more<br />

powerful than I." ^[<strong>The</strong>reupon . . .] the roaring <strong>of</strong> the wild beasts came<br />

and the multitude <strong>of</strong> the wild animals began to cry out . .]. And 'Ohyah<br />

spoke to him thus: "My dream has overwhelmed( ?) [me]^^ ^ ^ and the s]leep<br />

<strong>of</strong> my eyes [has fled], when I have seen a [vi]sion. To be sure, I know that<br />

[...].'<br />

And here is a second fragment <strong>of</strong> 4QGiantsS which must come from the<br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> the scroll:<br />

b]^o I'pKi n'pix [<br />

]na T b}3^ nanfi[<br />

] vacat [<br />

] ivb^Qi nina[<br />

'[...] ^they defiled themselves [. . .] ^the giants and the nephilim and<br />

[. . .] 3they begat. And if all [...] ^in his blood( ?) and according to the power<br />

[. . . 5. . . the giant]s that it did not suffice them and [their children.. .]^ they<br />

demanded much to eat [. . .]7 the nephilim smote it {sc. the earth)(?) [. . .].'<br />

We find again here the subjects well known from En. 7: 1-5 (En* i iii<br />

13-21 and En^ i ii 18-25); 9- 8-9; 15: 4 and 8-11; 106: 14 and 17 (En^ 5<br />

ii 18-19 and 21-2). <strong>The</strong> theme <strong>of</strong> the subjugation <strong>of</strong> men by the demons<br />

was developed more picturesquely in the Manichaean Book <strong>of</strong> Giants, to<br />

judge by fragment / <strong>of</strong> the Middle Persian Kawdn (Henning, pp. 58 and 62):<br />

{page i) '. . . many . . . were killed, four hundred thousand Righteous . . .<br />

with fire, naphtha, and brimstone . . . And the angels moved out <strong>of</strong> sight <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Enoch</strong>. Electae et auditrices . . . and ravished them. <strong>The</strong>y chose beautiful<br />

[women], and demanded them in marriage. Sordid . . .
