Ll. 19-22 (En. 92: 2). IZDK in line 19 is the participle; *and said' E.<br />

Ll. 19/20. <strong>The</strong> passage *and concerning the elect <strong>of</strong> the world, and concerning the plant <strong>of</strong><br />

equity (E^ justice, E^ justice and equity)' was worded differently in the <strong>Aramaic</strong> original,<br />

which read approximately *[and concerning the elect <strong>of</strong> the world who had grown up (Ip^O<br />

as in Dan. 7: 8, 20, or a synon)rm)] from the plant <strong>of</strong> truth [and <strong>of</strong> justice]'.<br />

L. 20. ^illontay *these (things)' in E, before 'ib^lakimmu, *I will speak unto you', is probably<br />

the result <strong>of</strong> the misreading <strong>of</strong> SH as XIH by the Greek translator.<br />

Ll. 21-2. All three K^D are omitted in E.—^At line 21, ]''l&''lj?1 pn**!? = *the holy angels'<br />

Ll. 22-4 (En. 93: 3). <strong>The</strong> description <strong>of</strong> the first Week and <strong>of</strong> the beginning <strong>of</strong> the second<br />

Week (lines 24-5) is more accurate in the Coptic fragment than in the Ethiopic text. E omits<br />

'<strong>Enoch</strong>' after *!', replaces ''^i7 1571 with Vhile', and duplicates SDl&p (n^xiH^ion<br />

Coptic)<br />

by 'judgement and righteousness' (but in PO vi, 3, p. 430 [172], 14 only sidSq). For the expression<br />

faithfully preserved in Coptic, see p. 82. <strong>The</strong> preposition<br />

the life (<strong>of</strong> past kings, etc.)' is discussed on p. 216.<br />

in its meaning 'during<br />

Ll. 24-5 (En. 93: 4). 'And after me will arise the second Week (cjSSo/ia?)' En? and Coptic,<br />

as against 'after me, in the second Week' in E (except E^^ which omits 'in'). <strong>The</strong> Weeks that<br />

follow are introduced by the phrase 'and after that, will arise the nth Week'; see En« iv 15 and<br />

the Coptic fragment for the 3rd and 5th Weeks, whilst E always has 'and after that, in the nth<br />

Week'.<br />

L. 25. <strong>The</strong> phrase HDS'' KOani X^lpB? HD ""1 is reworked in E: 'will arise great<br />

wickedness, and deceit will have sprung up'. Note that the pronoun ''T is rewritten from ''T.<br />

<strong>The</strong> scribe was thus modernizing the orthography <strong>of</strong> his model, which was fairly old, dating<br />

approximately from around the year 100 B.C.<br />
