In the <strong>Enoch</strong>ic writings <strong>Enoch</strong> may be called XT3!&p HDD, *the scribe <strong>of</strong> righteousness', or<br />

N12?*1D nSO,<br />

*the scribe <strong>of</strong> distinction'; see the note to En« 2 2. <strong>The</strong> first epithet underHnes<br />

his moral rectitude (in line with '<strong>Enoch</strong>, the righteous man' <strong>of</strong> En. i: 2), whilst the second<br />

one qualifies him as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional, 'distinguished', copyist who writes 'distinctly, clearly', and<br />

perhaps, at the same time, as a redactor <strong>of</strong> laws which have the force <strong>of</strong> judges' 'decisions'.<br />

Whereas the former expression could be simply rendered by 'Evwx ypafifiarcvs rijs SiKaio-<br />

GvvTjs (or TTJs dXrjdelas En. 15: i), the latter was paraphrased by the Greek translator, as we<br />

can see from the E version <strong>of</strong> En. 92: i (beginning) and from the CM fragment. CM, judging<br />

by the corresponding E text, probably had this form: 'Evojx ypalfjifiarevs<br />

TWV aa€crTdT(ov]<br />

epycovy '<strong>Enoch</strong>, the scribe <strong>of</strong> very clear (trustworthy) deeds'. An <strong>Aramaic</strong> adverbial derivative<br />

<strong>of</strong> the root pr^y namely U^^D^P in Esd. 4: 18, was translated by o-a^cD? in a Greek recension <strong>of</strong><br />

the Old Testament. <strong>The</strong> Ethiopic translator confused the adjective aa^€aTdTwv<br />

with GoojTdTwv<br />

and rendered it by '<strong>of</strong> all... wisdom'. <strong>The</strong>n he took epya in an Old Testament sense as meaning<br />
