Golf News-
Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf
Well they just keep it going! Our ladies North and
South interclub teams are off to a rip roaring start.
Congratulations ladies on some great play and may
the competitions view never change!!
The men’s interclub team also fashioned a decent (third) finish in the first
interclub of the year. Knowing these guys, just like a snake, we are waiting
in the tall grass to make our move!
Have you seen the South Course?? I am fortunate enough to hear the comments
from the membership both new and old. The “Old Timers” tell me it
is better than ever and what that course deserves to be. The “newbies” tell
me how much fun it is to play and cannot believe how fortunate we are to
have two golf courses that are so good and so different. The one negative
is the “Old Timers” are afraid to many people will discover their secret and
start playing there on a regular basis. What a great problem to have, two
good golf courses.
FAiRWAY FEATS
• Randy Benish put a nine iron in the Hole on #7 for an EAGLE
• Another EAGLE was spotted on #17 north when Sue Colburn
jarred it from the fairway
• Mike Shapiro also captured the EAGLE on #12 north
• Rounding out the foursome is Kristen Klein with EAGLE on
#4 north
CONGRATULATIONS to all!!
Sonterra Junior Golfers!!
Summer is Almost Here – Let the Fun Begin!
We will be offering the following clinics for all Junior Golfers:
June 9-11 Beginner
July 21-25 Intermediate
June 23-25 Intermediate August 4-7 Beginner
July 7-9 Beginner
All Clinics will be from 9-11am • Cost: $95 Member; $110 Guests
With May upon us everyone is gearing up for summer plans. Like everyone
my family and I are trying to figure out a vacation. We are taking a
STAYCATION and would suggest you do the same. Two golf courses, a
great swimming venue, fitness facilities, tennis at its best and more dining
and food venues than any resort. Bring the family out to use your club
and bring your guest out to introduce them to what we all know is a great
place to vacation. The south course is a great “family golf venue” and
with our junior clinics, tennis clinics, kids club and other activities, there
is always something to do. Grab a hotel for a night or two and make this
staycation one you will talk about for years!!
Girls, Giggles, and Golf is BACK Every Tuesday!!!!
3:30pm - complimentary lesson with Jeff Hunter
4pm – 9 holes of golf • 6:ish - wine and cheese in 19th Hole!
All levels of golf welcome! Please RSVP in the Golf Shop
Turf Talk- Barry Carter, Director of Golf Course Maintenance
Around the Course
Spring is finally here and we have been blessed with a
couple of decent rains, just under 4” total. At the same
time, we have been able to complete all of the critical works
in our irrigation sprinkler upgrades and are now working on cosmetic fixes, such
as the areas in the left rough on #11 and the mounds on the left of #13. We
will also be adding a few heads around greens to water the Kosse sand in our
bunkers, to make it more manageable.
You may have noticed some of the trenching we have done around the 7th and
18th greens and the 19th or Terrace putting green. These trenches are being cut
in so that we can install a poly material root barrier to prevent tree roots from
invading our greens.
You may remember
that we completely
excavated the 19th
green last fall during
our South course
renovation. Two
weeks ago we cut a
hole in that green
for a powerball
pitching contest and
we found that tree roots had already grown all the way across that green. That’s
more than forty feet in six months! When we opened up that trench for the
installation we found literally thousands of roots across the whole circumference
of that side of the green. As it is impractical to have to cut that trench repeatedly
every six months, we are installing a product that will be impermeable to those
roots. In the week since we installed the barrier we have already seen a marked
improvement in the turf.
And one more important note. We have been designated by the Toro company
to be a test site for a new root zone sensor that measures moisture content, salt
index, and ground temperature. We are placing three of these sensors in the 11th
green on the North, which is typically one of our toughest greens to maintain, and
the sensors will report every 5 seconds back to me via the internet with graphic
data. If you are interested checking out this new technology, go on the internet
to turfguard.net and take a look at what all it will do. Not only will this help up
with proper timing and depth of watering, but it will also predict heat stress far
in advance of visual inspection, increase of salt accumulation, and monitor soil
temperature. The reporting on soil temperature will also help up predict insect
pressure and to time pre-emergent herbicide applications based on when different
weeds germinate at specific temperatures. And this equipment is being provided
to us for free.
Lastly, a huge thanks to all our members for being observant of our cart traffic
program. There has been a big improvement in our fairway turf conditions and
a lot of it has to do with your efforts. Thank you for being such supportive
members.

Sonterra Women’s Golf Association - Pat Hastings, Publicity Chair
What a great month we’ve had!! Twenty-six of our SWGA members celebrated St. Patrick’s
Day by beating the Pros. Over 60 members and their guests enjoyed our best Guest Day
ever. Many thanks to Beverly Mackey and Bev Gebhart for all their hard work on the event.
Competition was tough, but the prizes for the winners and the luncheon were fantastic.
Our tournament chairs, Regina Turner and Marlene Bailey couldn’t resist a few April Fool’s
surprises to liven up our Ace and Star game this month. The highlight of the month was
the celebration of our beloved Hazel Stockard’s 95th Birthday! The Birthday girl holed 8
one puts!! No wonder she is everyone’s role model.
SWGA continues to grow our membership. We have recently had some ladies express
an interest in reviving the 9-Holer’s Play Day. This is a great way to get out and learn the
game even if you aren’t up to playing the full 18 holes. Contact Susan Powell at 490-5570
and let her know if you are interested.
Tish Rosenthal and her new Co-Chair Darla Hedrick want to remind everyone that we need
players to sign up for the Stableford Cup competition. The Stableford Cup competition is
a great way to meet new friends and have an opportunity to play at the other clubs in the
Hill Country.
Happy 95th Birthday, Hazel
The SWGA Board welcomed Carol Churchill as our new Secretary. Carol graciously agreed
to take over the duties for the remainder of the year.
Don’t forget the Classic Affair Invitational Tournament to be held 12-14 May. Susie Dillree
and the committee have worked hard to make this year’s event the best ever!
Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
We have just finished our celebrated Member/
Guest Tournament and are now prepared to begin
the first of our trifecta of club championship
events – The Club Doubles Championship. Our
spring tennis season comes to a close with the
Doubles Championship and the Memorial Day Mixer. All of us
in the tennis shop wish to say thanks for a great spring – thanks
for your participation in our spring events and for making us all
feel like one big family. This is one of the reasons Sonterra is so
special – members like YOU.
We do not plan on slowing down – the summer is about fun! Plan
on having some tennis nights followed by poolside fun. Watch your
e-mails and the June newsletter for more details. The results from
the Member/Guest will follow in the next newsletter.
Our Boot Camp on March 27th was loads of fun. If you missed it,
don’t worry - we will have more. We did one and one half hours of
clinics, followed by one hour of doubles play, followed by pizza and
beverages. We had a great time!
Beginner Ladies Clinic
Ladies – beginners or advanced beginners – we have a great way
to meet others of your ability in order to enhance your enjoyment
of this great sport. On Monday mornings at 10:30 AM, Mike and
Shanna teach a 1.5 hour class that is both a great way to learn and
to allow us to plug you into our numerous programs. The cost is
$20.00 and we have loaner rackets for you to demo. Please call the
shop at 491-9888 or e-mail Mike at sonterramike@gmail.com for
more information, or to sign up.
If mornings aren’t good for you Josey teaches an evening class on
Mondays at 7 PM. We’ve got you covered!
BALL MACHINE CLUB
What is summer good for? Its great for working on your game
before the new season begins. Make plans with your pro to work
on changing your grip or swing. Maybe you would like to hit a
harder pace ball or develop that weapon you’ve longed
for. Learn with your pro this summer, use
the ball machine for practice and then
use the leagues as your testing
grounds to gain
confidence
in the
stroke.
Now is the
time – I
signed up for it and I’ll see
you there.
SUMMER LEAGUE
Sign up now for the summer leagues. We’ve been taking
reservations since April 13th and we have limited space for the first
52 to sign up. We know it is summer and if your schedule is too
busy please sign up as a sub. All leagues begin the week of June 1st.
Revised day for Ladies League in the Morning: Monday 4.0, Tuesday
2.5 and 3.5 and Wednesday 3.0.
CLUB DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
Monday thru Friday May 18-22
We found a way to avoid the busy weekend schedule of our
members (and the heat) by playing in the evening. It has worked
well and we will do it again this year. Matches will begin Monday
at 6 or 7 PM with all final matches being played on Friday evening
– followed by (you got it ) a party! Sign up in the pro shop (or call
491-9888) for your chance at that much envied parking space and
your name on the plaque of champions.
MEMORIAL DAY MIXER
Monday May 25th – 9AM to 12 Noon
What a great way to spend a holiday – play a little tennis, eat a little
barbecue and enjoy a little dip in the pool. We typically have 80 or
more members playing in this event and this year I am adding a few
little twists – come out and see! Please reserve your spot for this
fun filled morning – call 491-9888.
Shanna and her staff would like to thank you – whether you are
a first timer or have been with us for a long time. We hope that
– while learning – we made tennis fun and we hope you made new
friends along the way. Summer camps are almost here and we
hope to see you in one of the 10 sessions we will have throughout
the summer. See insert for more details. Parents, thank you for
allowing us the opportunity to introduce your child to a game they
will enjoy for a lifetime.

Note from Scott- Scott Works, USPTA Staff Professional
Playing in windy conditions:
We have previously told you how to hit a ball in windy conditions: Hit
into the wind, make sure you transfer your weight forward, hit the ball in
front and aim higher over the net. A solidly hit ball will sail through the
wind better than a hard mishit. When with the wind step up to the ball, don’t decelerate
your swing and add more topspin to bring the ball down.
My next suggestions are for receiving the ball in the wind. Although you may be hitting
more defensive shots into the wind, the wind will blow the ball straight. Play back deeper
in the court, step into the ball, take a shorter backswing, hit it out in front and hit it solidly.
When you see deep shots, back up early so you can step back into the ball. Actually,
hitting with the wind can be much tougher. Balls hit to you in the wind act more like a
knuckleball. Into the wind the ball blows more side to side and is short – which keeps you
more off balance. Keep your feet moving, step up to the ball, take a shorter backswing,
keep your racket head speed constant or slightly accelerate and add more topspin. Good
luck and have fun – it can’t be windy forever.
Note from Mike-
Mike Thatcher, Head Tennis Professional
Do you think about where you stand to serve in doubles? I see many
people standing near the center stripe as if they were playing singles.
Then, after making the serve, they move out wide to cover a return in
the alley. Why not just stand near the singles side line to begin? I agree
that you should vary your serving position from time to time in order to give the returner a
different look. Just be more aware that you will more than likely be out of position for your
first shot after the serve if you stand near the center stripe.
Note from
Shanna-
Shanna Reese, USPTA
Teaching Professional
The warm up is a critical
time for you to take note of your opponent’s
strength and weaknesses. Therefore it is
important to warm up with a friend or team
member before your match. This way, when
you start the warm up for the match, you
can focus all your attention on studying your
opponent. For example, if your opponent
moves around the ball to hit more forehands,
then it is fairly safe to say that the
backhand is a weaker shot. Try to keep the
ball to the backhand for an advantage. Or,
watch your opponent hit volleys and take
note on the position from which they start
at the net for their first volley. This is their
“comfort” position and if that person starts
too close to the net then the lob will be an
easy winner.
