UAW-DC 400
ON THE MOVE
The UAW-DC 400 and LVMS just keep getting better
Las Vegas has always been
known for doing things
big, and the Las Vegas Motor
Speedway (LVMS)
takes that heritage to heart as host of
the annual UAW-DaimlerChrysler
400, the third stop on the NASCAR
Nextel Cup tour.
In fact, NASCAR Weekend at LVMS
is the racing venue’s most popular annual
attraction, and the UAW-DC 400 is
the weekend’s main event. The race
takes place the weekend of March 10–
12 this year, kicking off the speedway’s
10th-anniversary season and marking
the ninth consecutive year that the NAS-
CAR event has ranked as Nevada’s bestattended
annual sports weekend.
Spectating in Style
One look at the tremendous crowds
that turn out all three days will tell you
that NASCAR Weekend in Las Vegas
has become one of the most significant
events on the motorsports calendar.
“With the construction of the Richard
Petty Terrace, we expect to see this
event continue to grow for years to
come,” says Chris Powell, general
manager of LVMS.
The new Richard Petty Terrace
adds 17,000 seats for spectators
above Grandstand Section 1, adjacent
to Turn 1 of the 1.5-mile track.
Seats in the new section, named in
honor of seven-time NASCAR champion
Richard Petty, provide fans with
a clear view of the pit road and the
cars leaving the pits. The terrace also
features its own restrooms and concession
stands.
Adding the Richard Petty Terrace
was a logical next step for the speedway,
Powell notes. “Las Vegas is the fastestgrowing
community in the country,” he
says. “The growth of Las Vegas and the
demand for tickets at Las Vegas Motor
Speedway are remarkably similar. The
decision to build the new spectator section
reflects both that growth and the
tremendous energy around motorsports
here in southern Nevada.”
Commemorating Champions
Naming the new structure for the
racing legend who is widely acknowledged
as NASCAR’s king was not a
difficult task, according to Powell.
He talked it over with O. Bruton
Smith, chair of Speedway Motorsports
Inc., the parent company of
LVMS, and the two agreed there was
only one choice.
“There are only two seven-time
NASCAR champions, and our existing
Dale Earnhardt Terrace is already
named for one of them,” Powell explains.
“With the addition of the Richard
Petty Terrace, our speedway will
now have grandstands named in
honor of both champions.”
NASCAR Weekend at
Las Vegas Motor Speedway
is the racing venue’s most
popular attraction, and the
UAW-DC 400 is its main event.
