Les mots entre pouvoir et puissance
Le colloque s’intéressera aux textes littéraires. Que se passe-t-il quand on commence à expérimenter
avec le langage ? Tout écrivain, même le plus classique, n’est-il pas par moments un peu
James Joyce ? En quoi cela consiste-t-il d’inventer ce que l’on pourrait appeler un style,
c’est-à-dire un agencement personnel de mots qui pose de nouveaux rapports au langage, au
monde et au sens ? Notre angle sera celui de l’interprétation des textes. Un texte peut être lu
selon un gradient allant de ce que Spinoza appelait potestas (le texte tente d’exercer un pouvoir
sur le corps et l’esprit du lecteur, il limite sa complexité sémantique) et potentia (le texte aide à
découvrir de nouvelles possibilités de vie en nous, il permet une connaissance plus qu’une reconnaissance,
il accroît notre complexité sémantique). Si l’on préfère, on peut aussi se référer à l’opposition
nietzchéenne entre pouvoir et puissance en reprenant la formulation commode des
traducteurs français de Nietzsche. Les communications proposeront une réflexion théorique à
partir de l’analyse critique d’un ou plusieurs textes afin de montrer comment une expérimentation
au niveau des agencements de mots modifie la production du sens du texte et de ses implications.

Literary Texts: The Power and the Possible
What happens when a writer starts experimenting with language? Isn’t there always the temptation
of being James Joyce, even in the case of classical writers? What exactly is the invention of
a style, that is a personal assemblage of words that creates new relationships with language, the
world, and meaning? The conference will focus on the interpretation of literary texts. A text can
be read according to a continuum ranging from what Spinoza called potestas (the text tries to
control the reader’s body and/or mind, it limits his/her semantic complexity) and potentia (the
text helps us discover new possibilities of life, it leads to cognition rather than recognition, it
increases our semantic complexity). A similar distinction is provided by the usual French translations
of the Nietzschean concept of Macht which can be rendered either as pouvoir or puissance.
Papers will provide a theoretical approach based on a critical analysis of one or several
literary texts showing how a writer’s experiment with words alters the production of meaning and
of its implications. A selection of articles will be published in the journal Imaginaires. Key-note
