to reckon."6s This physical force partly alluded to precisely<br />

that tendency the British identified as anarchist. A chain of<br />

correspondence had been activated by which physical fo rce<br />

equaled shakti equaled power equaled energy equaled the<br />

bomb-that is, the pure manifestation of such energy; or<br />

by an alternate route, physical force equaled karma yoga<br />

equaled action in the world equaled direct action equaled<br />

Another passage read, "An immense and incalculable<br />

revolution is at hand, and its instruments must be themselves<br />

immense in their aspiration, uncalculating in the<br />

self-immolation." Following further calls to self-sacrifice fo r<br />

the greater good, the author concluded that "the fair hope<br />

of an orderly and peaceful evolution of self-government,<br />

which the first energies of the new movement had fostered,<br />
