<strong>Maia</strong> Hamnath<br />

!\Iaia <strong>Ramnath</strong> is a teacher, writer, activist, and dancer/<br />

aerialist living in New Yo rk City. She has been involved in<br />

variolls manifestations of global justice, anti-imperialist, and<br />

Palestine solidarity organizing for many years. <strong>Maia</strong> attended<br />

graduate school at the University of California at Santa Cruz<br />

(UCSC), earning a PhD in history, though it appears in retrospect<br />

that she spent most of the time on a picket line. She<br />

has taught courses at UCSC and New Yo rk University on<br />

global history, modern South Asian history, and anticolonial<br />

radical movements. <strong>Maia</strong> is the author of The Haj to Utopia:<br />

Ho w the Ghadar Movement Charted Global Radifalism and<br />

Attempted to OverthroUJ the Br'itish Empire (University of<br />

California Press, 20 1 1 )-in many ways a companioll volume<br />

to this one. She was a member of the Free Radio Santa Cruz<br />

and original Bluestockings bookstore collectives, and is currently<br />

a member of the Institute fo r Anarchist Studies board<br />

and Historians against War steering committee. Finally,<br />

as cofounder and director of a multidisciplinary performing<br />

arts group sometimes called Constellation Moving<br />

Company, she hopes some day to "use her powers fo r good"<br />

like radical Left circus artists Dharamvir Singh and John S.<br />

Clarke did a century ago.
