Commissioned to produce heavy oil and middle distillates as the largest volume products, the original refinery outside Quebec
City was brought on line in October 1971. Several major upgrades were implemented in 1980 through 1983, and the refinery was
further expanded beyond the year 2000 with a new crude unit, catalytic reformer unit, gasoline desulfurization unit (GDU) and
distillate desulfurization unit. The state-of-the-art facility sits on 370 acres on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, with
the ability to receive large, single cargoes up to 1 million barrels — a significant advantage over other refineries. The Quebec City
Refinery was purchased from Ultramar Diamond Shamrock in 2001 and renamed the Jean Gaulin Refinery in 2002 to honor the
former UDS chairman and CEO, Jean Gaulin.
