Johnny Reid Benefit Concert
We are proud to announce that after expenses, $30,000 was raised and directed toward the
purchase of a state-of-the-art Digital Mammography Unit for the Evangelista/Adams Centre
for Breast Screening. A special thank you to our supporters: Cooper Wealth Management,
Johnson Controls, The New Country 95.3, Yamaha Canada, White Oaks Conference Resort
& Spa, Gotcha Covered and Chef Erik Peacock from Wellington Court Restaurant.
Pictured on the Right: Johnny poses with his fans after the concert. Guests who purchased VIP
tickets were treated to a cocktail reception prior to the concert which included a private meet
n’ greet with the Country Superstar.
Ever since St. Catharines General Hospital's breast
screening centre opened in 1997, Bev Brooks has
been an annual client. With a history of benign breast
lumps and an aunt who died of breast cancer, the 55-
year-old St. Catharines woman is considered high risk for
getting the potentially fatal disease. Nearly every time
she goes for a mammogram, she's called back for a
second look.
A new, $800,000 digital mammography unit --
introduced at the screening centre on Dec. 1 -- offers
doctors a clearer, instant X-ray image, and cuts down on
recall rates for patients like Brooks.
Improved clarity is one of the beauties of the new
system, said Dr. Amit Mehta, the Niagara Health
System's chief of radiology. Working like a digital
camera, the new mammography machine -- the first of
its kind in Niagara that replaced two 10-year-old
filmscreen units -- beams images within seven seconds,
which offers quicker diagnosis and clarity. Like a digital
photo, the brightness and contrast of images can be
changed, and certain areas can be magnified to get a
better look -- luxuries not offered by the old
mammogram film system. All X-rays go through a
computer-aided detection system, offering a second
look that might guide doctors to problem areas they
might not have noticed otherwise. Images are also
inputted onto a computer network that can be easily
accessed by doctors inside and outside the hospital.
Patients are in and out of appointments faster, and there
are plans to increase the client load to 180 per week
from 120, Mehta said. "I've wanted this for quite a
while," Mehta said of the new system, which is available
in cities, such as Hamilton and Toronto. "We were just
ecstatic that we're able to finally have this technology. It
increases our sensitivity for detecting (abnormalities)."
It took a gargantuan community effort to bring the new
$800,000 machine to the Evangelista/ Adams Centre for
Breast Screening. Fundraising by the SCGH Foundation
started two years ago and got a $250,000 boost in 2008
when Canadian rocker Bryan Adams put on a benefit
concert in the Garden City. A recent performance by
country singer Johnny Reid also raised money.
Country Music Sensation Thrills Fans
Often referred to as a cross between Joe Cocker and a sexier Rod
Stewart, Johnny Reid has a unique Scottish country voice that grabs
the attention of music lovers of all genres. The SCGH Foundation was
grateful that Johnny, who swept the Canadian Country Music Associations
(CCMA) awards in 2009 with honours including: Male Artist of the Year;
Album of the Year; Video of the Year; Songwriter of the Year and Fan's Choice,
agreed to perform a benefit concert. "Any opportunity I get to help people,
I jump at it, if I'm able to" stated Johnny.
Hundreds of donors enjoyed a special performance that took place on October
5, 2009 at the Bethany Community Church. The "Tartan Army" (name given
to Johnny's adoring fans) enjoyed songs including: Dance with Me, A Woman
like You, Old Flame, Hey-O and My Old Friend from the CCMA's album of the
year "Dance With Me." Following the performance, an exciting live auction
took place with items including an autographed guitar, drumming lessons in
Nashville and the most priceless of all…breakfast with Johnny Reid!
The NHS offers four Ontario Breast Screening Program
centres across the region using filmscreen technology.
Mehta emphasized there is nothing wrong with the
older technology -- which is still the gold standard
around the world. Mammograms are considered the
best early detection of breast cancer.
Inspired to Give...
Meet a few "Friends of our Foundation" and discover what inspires them to give back to their community.
Jan Cook - Remembering his Father Jack Cook.
Jack Cook was a success in every way, in the eyes of his son Jan. Although Jan Cook admired his Father's
business acumen, it was his ability to see every human beings worth, regardless of their status that impressed
upon him the most. He treated every man with respect and dignity. He believed that we all have something to
contribute to the betterment of human kind. Three generations of the Cook family have learned by Jack and Jan
Cook's examples.
The Cook family's efforts have been recognized countless times by those they tirelessly volunteer to help any
way they can, whenever they are asked. As this years sponsor of the Tree of Lights Campaign, Jan's message to
his community is this "We have a bridge to gap. Although a state-of-the-art health-care facility is on its way, we
have real health-care needs now that must be met in the interim. Every contribution, large and small matters.
Now, at this holy time of year, we have the chance to contribute to the family of man. We are all connected."
Amiel Chios & Gus Vogiatzis - Remembering Sally Vogiatzis.
Both coming from immigrant families, Gus Vogiatzis and Amiel Chios knew what it was like to grow up with
little more than what they needed to survive, good values, the love of family and friends, and the support
of their community. Successful business partners for nearly twenty years now, they feel their community
remains supportive. It's their deep appreciation of this that inspires them most to give.
In spite of her hardships and losing her eldest son Billy to leukemia at the age of eighteen, Gus remembers his
Mother Sally often saying, "We have enough, others have it worse". Gus lost his Mother Sally to cancer in 2003,
at the age of fifty nine.
Losing two family members to cancer, and their sense of gratitude for this community, fuel Gus and Amiel to
host and dedicate the proceeds of the "Lina Linguini's & Fresco's Annual Charity Golf Tournament", to the
St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation.
Gus Vogiatzis stated, "We need this new facility here. Driving your Mother back and forth to Hamilton for
cancer treatment is not fun. There was nothing I could do to make her feel comfortable."
"Giving is not only good for our souls; it helps to heal our hearts." Pam Schonewille
The Schonewille Family - Remembering Meghan & Jared Schonewille.
After great difficulty conceiving, Pam and Don Schonewille were blessed with their daughter Abby - now
seven years old. When she was a year old, a second visit to the McMaster Fertility Clinic yielded wonderful
news, twins, a boy and a girl, were on their way to join the Schonewille family. At 28 weeks, Pam went into
labour, and gave birth to her twins Meghan and Jared. Meghan survived for an hour, her Mother never got
to hold her daughter alive. Jared, the other twin, was in bad shape. He needed to be transferred to a hospital
for urgent special care. There was not a bed to be found in the province. Jared was taken to Women and
Children's Hospital in Buffalo. While Pam was recovering from the births, her Husband Don was at Jared's
side. Finally, Pam was released from hospital, and rushed to her Husband and Son.
On December the first, Pam and Don were told that Jared would not make it. Four days after his birth, Jared
died peacefully in his Mothers arms. Since that time Pam, Don, Abby and Aidan, have committed themselves
to giving to the SCGH Foundation as a way of remembering their beloved son, daughter, brother & sister.
Whether it be a lemonade stand organized by the children, or raising funds at the school Pam teaches at,
this family gives. "We can't prevent what happened to us from happening to another family, our hope is that
our efforts might provide some comfort to ease the suffering of another family."
David Heath, Ontario Power Generation - Honouring John Veeneman.
John Veeneman could relate to everyone at Ontario Power Generation. He'd held just about every position
before he retired. He earned the respect of his colleagues, one and all. That's why they surrounded him with
support when he lost his first wife to cancer. John's experience inspired him to become an advocate for the
betterment of health-care in Niagara. He inspired others like David Heath, to do the same.
John's battle with cancer was not over. While planning for his retirement, he was diagnosed with the disease
himself. Once again, his colleagues were there for him. "All the guy's volunteered to drive John to his
treatments in Hamilton. He was very sick and he needed our help." He'd earned a family of friends at OPG.
Thankfully, John won this fight with cancer. He now enjoys the retirement he was planning for.
David Heath honours John Veeneman, by continuing the fundraising traditions started by his friend and
colleague. Ontario Power Generation has supported the SCGH Foundation and the It's Our Time Campaign
on both a corporate and local level. Ontario Power Generation has held staff BBQ's and dress down days to
raise funds and even participated in the "Coins for Kids" program for the SCGH Paediatric Department. These
dedicated current and retired employees of Ontario Power Generation have raised tens of thousands of
dollars for the Niagara Health System. Inspired by the passion of a colleague and respect for a friend.
For those who have sacrificed for another, championed a worthy cause, or simply lightened the load of a friend,we thank you.
You led us by example. Together, we can carry on. We honour your legacies by striving to live up to your high standards.
You made a difference. The world is a brighter place because of you.
Dear Parents/Guardians:
What Christmas is all about?
Special Ways to Give
What is Christmas all about? It is shopping for just the right gift, wrapping paper, cards, trees,
decorations, and wrestling with crowds at the mall. However the true meaning of Christmas
is all about the "Birth of "Jesus"!
Congratulations and Thank you for
Sharing Your Special Day with Us!
So, it is with this in mind that I have a bold request of you…in lieu of a Christmas gift for the
teacher (me), I would appreciate you making a donation to the Walker Family Cancer Centre
in my name. I will also make a donation to this worthy organization. This donation gesture is
in keeping with the true meaning of Christmas - helping others in time of illness. Please forgive
my bold presumption but your gift of money to the Foundation will please me the most during
this Christmas season. I have spoken to the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation
(Queenston Street) and they are aware of my request. They are willing to collect all our gifts
of money (whatever size) and make sure that our loonies and toonies get to the Walker Family
Cancer Centre care of the St. Catharines General Hospital Foundation.
Please think about my request for sharing at Christmas and please no teacher gifts for me. If
you would really like to see me smile, then stop by the hospital or call 905-323-FUND (3863)
and watch them smile too!
May God's blessings be on you and your family during this Holy Season of Advent!
Sincerely, Mrs. Ferrusi: Junior Kindergarten Teacher, St. Charles School
Deanna and J.P on their special day.
In Honour of each of their guests, J.P and Deanna Shalala
chose to commemorate their wedding day with a donation
of $400 to the Walker Family Cancer Centre in lieu of wedding
favours. We would like to wish the Shalala's a happy and
healthy life together.
These are just two examples of the many ways to give during the holiday season or to honour/memorialize a loved one throughout the
year. The team at the Foundation Office would be happy to create and distribute a personalized card to share with your special message.
"Every day is a gift; I live every day to the
fullest and get up every morning with a
smile on my face." ~ John Newberry
During his 32 years teaching with
the Niagara Catholic School Board,
John Newberry started a delicious
annual tradition of cooking a turkey
dinner for his class. After being
diagnosed with terminal lymphoma
and leukemia three years ago; John and
his family decided to host a fundraiser
that would support others who are
fighting cancer.
Roast the Turkey was held on
November 13th, 2009 at Coppola's
Ristorante and featured music by Spirit
of Sound, a silent auction and a turkey
dinner buffet. Hundreds of people
attended the 1st Annual Roast the
Turkey event that helped raise $4,553
for the Walker Family Cancer Centre.
The Newberry family also donated
proceeds toward Wellspring Niagara.
We are grateful to organizers Michelle, Ted, Dawn
and John and look forward to another successful
event in 2010.
Thank You, from a Grateful Donor
To the SCGH Foundation Board of Directors,
On behalf of myself and Glens' family, I would like to thank your team for the time and energy
put into the creation of the Trillium Pane in memory of my late husband "Glen Arthur Barker.”
What a wonderful tribute. During Christmas, Glen's extended family from out of town came to
see this stained glass pane, in memory of their brother. It was touching. The completion of this
memorial couldn't have been more perfect.
Thank you once again.
New Equipment from Generous Donors
Due to overwhelming support from generous
community members, the SCGH Foundation has been
successful in securing innovative health care equipment for
the St. Catharines General Hospital site of the Niagara
Health System. We would like to thank two special
individuals for their generous donations: Shirley Estey’s
donation allowed us to purchase a Bariatric Chair for
Occupational Therapy (OT), and Frederick Marlow
purchased an Electric Bed for the Medical Department in
Loving Memory of his wife Joan Marlow. It is important to
note that any and all equipment purchased today can and
will be transferred to the new healthcare facility.
Tribute Wines - In Honour
of John C. Marynissen
On Friday, November 20th, Marynissen Estate Winery held
an event to launch a series of Tribute Wines in honour of
founding father Mr. John C. Marynissen. John came to Canada
from Holland in 1952 and began growing grapes in Niagara
with his wife Nannie. Realizing the importance of Vinifera
grapes in the production of quality wines, John switched to
planting Vinifera vines. He was the first person to plant Cabernet
Sauvignon for commercial use in Canada - Marynissen Estates
now has the oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Ontario.
During this event that
featured a performance by
the critically acclaimed
Accordion Crimes and
food by Chef Eric Peacock
from Wellington Court,
Marynissen Estate Winery
announced their generous
pledge of $25,000 to the
It's Our Time Campaign.
Additionally, a portion of
proceeds from each bottle
of tribute wine sold during
the event was directed to
the campaign.
A Magical Event
Benefiting our Youngest Patients
Our local Professional Fire Fighters' Association has been working overtime to ensure that our
youngest patients have the most up to date equipment possible. For over two decades, the
association has organized the Magic n' Miracles Christmas Show which has raised over $470,000 for
the Paediatric Department and Special Care Nursery.
Proceeds from the 2008 Christmas Magic Show totaled $17,000 and was used to purchase a C2000
Isolette (state-of-the-art Infant Incubator) for the Special Care Nursery. We are grateful to have
continued support and friendship from the St. Catharines Professional Fire Fighter's.
McDonald's restaurants in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines,
Niagara-on-the-Lake and Port Colborne donated 10
cents from the sale of every cup of coffee sold from April 2008
to April 2009 toward the It's Our Time Campaign in support
of the new health-care complex. Jana Katz, Niagara Falls
McDonald's operator, said customers purchased nearly
500,000 cups of coffee at the participating McDonald's
restaurants.
The $45,049 raised will go toward enhancing family rooms in
SCGH Foundation Hosts Volunteer Appreciation Dinner
"I have found that among its other benefits,
giving liberates the soul of the giver." ~ Maya Angelou
Year after year the SCGH Foundation is overwhelmed with the level
of commitment and dedication from our volunteers. Whether it is
helping with administrative tasks in the office, assisting at our many
events or selling H.E.L.P.P. lottery tickets in the lobby, our volunteers
have been a major component to the success of the SCGH Foundation
in raising funds to purchase urgently needed equipment.
In December 2009, it was our pleasure to host a dinner at Lina
Linguini's in celebration of our volunteers who tirelessly give their time
to support their local community hospital. We are very fortunate to
have many volunteers who understand the importance of our
fundraising initiatives and our commitment to bringing quality
healthcare to the Niagara Region.
Smiles All Around
Tim Hortons Owners Support the
It’s Our Time Campaign
Local Tim Hortons owners from across the Niagara Region have pledged to
raise a generous $100,000 by 2010 for the new health-care complex by
donating proceeds from their "Smile Cookie" campaign. The new 970,000
square foot health-care complex will offer regional services that have never
been available in the Niagara Region including: Walker Family Cancer Centre;
Cardiac Catheterization Services at the Heart Investigation Unit; Longer Term
Mental Health Services and Expanded Dialysis Services.
From September 21st - 27th, 2009, Tim Hortons customers supported the It's
Our Time Campaign by purchasing a special smiling chocolate chip cookie. An
incredible $51,520 was raised from participating Tim Hortons locations across
Niagara including $18,340 from St. Catharines and Thorold locations and
$1,820 from Niagara-on-the-Lake.
A special thank you to the following participating locations:
