MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEO We look back on 2011 as a year of innovation ong>andong> change. Marked by ong>theong> end of a cycle, that of ong>theong> Three- Year Scientific ong>andong> Technical Production Plan, ong>theong> year 2011 also meant adjusting to a full array of new developments. From ong>theong> chairmanship of ong>theong> Board to ong>theong> IRSST’s organizational structure ong>andong> project management practices, changes took place. It was decided that ong>theong> next scientific ong>andong> technical production plan would be a five-year raong>theong>r than threeyear plan, which gave rise to broad consultation with our partners. Many people from different stakeholder circles were involved. A second institutional evaluation, carried out by an external committee, occupied a large part of ong>theong> 2011 calendar. The resulting recommendations led to major decisions, ong>theong> most important of which involved a major organizational restructuring. Announced in December, ong>theong> new structure is designed to refocus our energies on ong>theong> main ong>researchong> issues without neglecting current operations. contributions of remarkable individuals were highly noteworthy. In addition, Dr. Christine Colin was honoured with France’s highest distinction: Chevalière de l’Ordre national (Knight of ong>theong> national order of merit) of ong>theong> Légion d’honneur, while Camille Limoges was named a Member of ong>theong> Order of Canada for his contributions to ong>theong> development ong>andong> direction of scientific ong>researchong>. We are proud to have been able to count on ong>theong> participation of ong>theong> members of our governing bodies in a vast range of scientific activities ong>andong> meetings. Their commitment is appreciated by all. The Institute continued to expong>andong> its reach by launching IRSST.TV, a section of ong>theong> Web site devoted exclusively to videos. Though still in its infancy, this new development offers great potential. The same applies to ong>theong> review of knowledge on cancers carried out for ong>theong> Workplace nnovation During ong>theong> year, work on a new project management model that aimed to improve our entire ong>researchong> process within a multi-project management context rallied both scientists ong>andong> management personnel alike. In terms of ensuring ong>theong> succession, ong>theong> Institute also made great strides by supporting two of its young chemists, who successfully ong>andong> quickly completed studies leading to CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) certification, ong>theong>reby reinforcing ong>theong> Institute’s industrial hygiene expertise. The achievements of ong>theong> IRSST’s ong>researchong> fields received widespread attention. A book on ergonomic interventions was published, apparently ong>theong> first of its kind in ong>theong> French-speaking world. The first Québec Survey on Working ong>andong> Employment Conditions ong>andong> Occupational Health ong>andong> Safety (EQCOTESST) report was submitted to ong>theong> Québec Minister of Labour, Lise Thériault. A state-ofong>theong>-art acoustics laboratory that is unrivalled in Montréal opened its doors under ong>theong> watchful eye of ong>theong> Board of Directors, whom I wish to thank. I would also like to welcome ong>theong> new chair of ong>theong> Board of Directors, Michel Després, ong>andong> to offer our sincere thanks to Luc Meunier, who left to take up new challenges. I must add that departures ong>andong> arrivals have all had an impact on ong>theong> composition of both ong>theong> Scientific Advisory Board ong>andong> ong>theong> Board of Directors. The often-lively debates ong>andong> stimulating IRSST — 2011 ACTIVITY REPORT Health, Safety ong>andong> Compensation Commission (WHSCC) of Newfoundlong>andong> ong>andong> Labrador. This project represents anoong>theong>r first, ong>andong> one that may open ong>theong> door to oong>theong>r collaborative undertakings outside Québec. I should like to close with mention of ong>theong> honours ong>andong> distinctions garnered in 2011, starting with those awarded by ong>theong> IRSST at ong>theong> ADRIQ (Association de la recherche industrielle du Québec) gala, where ong>theong> Institute hong>andong>ed ong>theong> Prix Innovation _ SST award to Robotics Design for its creation of a modular manipulator arm that helps eliminate risks to workers at ong>theong> source. Lastly, I wish to offer my sincere thanks to our entire staff for ong>theong>ir dedication ong>andong> commitment, with special congratulations to all those who distinguished ong>theong>mselves in one way or anoong>theong>r during this year of change. One thing is certain: both ong>theong> IRSST’s senior management ong>andong> employees have greater faith than ever in ong>theong> Institute’s mission, which is to contribute, through ong>researchong>, to ong>theong> prevention of industrial accidents ong>andong> occupational diseases, ong>andong> to ong>theong> rehabilitation of affected workers.
