Exposure to aerosolized bacteria <strong>and</strong> fungi among
collectors of commercial, mixed residential, recyclable <strong>and</strong>
compostable waste, written by Jacques Lavoie (IRSST),
Christopher Dunkerley, Tom Kosatsky <strong>and</strong> André Dufresne
(Université de Montréal), published in Science of <strong>the</strong> Total
Environment, in 2006, remains <strong>the</strong> most cited article in its
field since its publication five years ago. This article is based
on <strong>the</strong> results of two IRSST <strong>research</strong> projects: Optimal
Layout of Trucks with Articulated Arms for Household Waste
Collection <strong>and</strong> Control of Garbage Collectors’ Exposure to
Bioaerosols.

BEST LECTURE
An epidemiologist with <strong>the</strong> IRSST, France Labrèche, was
<strong>the</strong> recipient of <strong>the</strong> Prix 3M Canada award given to <strong>the</strong>
authors of <strong>the</strong> two best lectures delivered at <strong>the</strong> conference
of <strong>the</strong> Association québécoise pour l’hygiène, la santé et
la sécurité du travail (AQHSST). Entitled Un premier pas
vers la prévention des cancers d’origine professionnelle :
portrait de l’exposition aux cancérogènes, this lecture was
based on <strong>the</strong> results of a current study on exposure to
carcinogens in <strong>the</strong> workplace.
BEST ARTICLE IN INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE
An article published in <strong>the</strong> Journal of Occupational <strong>and</strong>
Environmental Hygiene <strong>and</strong> deriving from IRSST-funded
<strong>research</strong> was awarded <strong>the</strong> Best Paper Award 2010 by <strong>the</strong>
Michigan Industrial Hygiene Society. Entitled Metalworking
Fluid-related Aerosols in Machining Plants, <strong>the</strong> paper was
based on <strong>the</strong> results of a project that evaluated bioaerosol
exposure <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> effects on <strong>the</strong> respiratory <strong>and</strong> skin health
of workers exposed to metal-cutting fluids. The authors are
Yan Gilbert, Marc Veillette, Anne Mériaux, Yvon Cormier,
<strong>and</strong> Caroline Duchaine of <strong>the</strong> Centre de recherche de
l’Institut universitaire de cardiologie et de pneumologie de
Québec (CRIUCPQ), <strong>and</strong> Jacques Lavoie of <strong>the</strong> IRSST.

BEST STUDENT LECTURE
Joannie Martin, a master’s student hosted by <strong>the</strong> IRSST, was
awarded one of two scholarships offered by <strong>the</strong> Fondation
de l’AQHSST for <strong>the</strong> two best lectures delivered by students
at this association’s conference held in Trois-Rivières. Her
presentation concerned <strong>the</strong> development of a method for
analyzing quartz in different matrices by X-ray diffraction.
The results will be published in <strong>the</strong> journal Powder Diffraction
of <strong>the</strong> International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD).
