EQCOTESST, A NEW STUDY<br />

The formulati<strong>on</strong> of a questi<strong>on</strong>naire, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> compilati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> analysis of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> resp<strong>on</strong>ses obtained in a<br />

teleph<strong>on</strong>e survey of 5,071 individuals, numerous<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> as many collaborators from ten different<br />

organizati<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> drafting of a voluminous<br />

656-page report, of a 270-page appendix<br />

including some 50 tables, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> of a summary<br />

report, a quality process requiring <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> services<br />

of 11 evaluators, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> more: this paints in broad<br />

strokes a picture of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> many steps leading to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

September 2011 publicati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> report <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

first Québec Survey <strong>on</strong> Working <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Employment<br />

C<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Occupati<strong>on</strong>al Health <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Safety<br />

(EQCOTESST).<br />

Over a period of nearly five years, this project<br />

required an enormous amount of work <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

part of a team of scientists from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> IRSST, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Institut nati<strong>on</strong>al de santé publique du Québec<br />

(INSPQ), <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Institut de la statistique du<br />

Québec (ISQ), to fulfill <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ate given to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m by Québec’s Ministère du Travail, which<br />

was to c<strong>on</strong>duct a first-ever populati<strong>on</strong> survey<br />

of this scope. The EQCOTESST provides a<br />

goldmine of informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Québec workers’<br />

percepti<strong>on</strong>s of matters such as work/life balance,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> organizati<strong>on</strong>al envir<strong>on</strong>ment <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> physical<br />

dem<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>s of work, violence at work, workers’<br />

overall health, musculoskeletal disorders<br />

(MSDs), work-related accidents, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> mental<br />

health. The <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g>ers innovated by developing<br />

new indicators for employment insecurity <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

precarious employment that will have to be<br />

validated in future projects.<br />

THE WORK CONTEXT AND OHS FIELD<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>text of increasingly frequent organizati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> technological changes, <str<strong>on</strong>g>research</str<strong>on</strong>g> work in this field<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tributes to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sustainable preventi<strong>on</strong> of occupati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

injuries through better knowledge of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> existing dynamics<br />

between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> work organizati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> OHS c<strong>on</strong>text within<br />

enterprises.<br />

J Effects of work changes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> demographic shifts<br />

ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2011<br />

One study showed, as never before, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> effects of cumulative<br />

work activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>straints <strong>on</strong> students who hold jobs<br />

during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> school year. It brought to light <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact that<br />

student workers generally experience more fatigue <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> more<br />

persistent or chr<strong>on</strong>ic musculoskeletal pain. The situati<strong>on</strong> is<br />

of even greater c<strong>on</strong>cern for CEGEP students <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> for those<br />

enrolled in Diploma of Vocati<strong>on</strong>al Studies (DVS) or adult<br />

general educati<strong>on</strong> programs. The results fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r suggest<br />

that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> occurrence of an initial work-related accident at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

beginning of a pers<strong>on</strong>’s working life increases his or her risk<br />

of being involved in ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r accident later.<br />
