COSIG Co-Occurring Disorders Conference, Hershey PA, May 15-17, 2006
Employment
• Approximately 20% of all voluntary
referrals to the EAP involve chemical
dependency.
• When a supervisor or manager refers
an employee for concerns related to
job performance, between 50 and
78% involve chemical dependence.
Employee attitudes
Employees will not seek treatment because:
• Fear of being fired
• Losing a license or promotion
• Lack of insurance coverage
• Concern about confidentiality
• Shame
•Denial
Mental health conditions are actually
the second leading cause of
absenteeism.
Relapse
• Employers need to understand that
relapse can be part of the recovery
process. Just as a diabetic may
experience problems if they don’t follow
their doctor’s instructions for diet and
medication, people who have an addictive
disorder or a mental illness may also
relapse. But with support from employers
and others, the potential for relapse
decreases as time in recovery increases.
“I won’t turn my back on Doc (Gooden), and I
won’t turn my back on Darryl (Strawberry),
and I’ll tell you why. These fellas—it’s a
sickness. And if we don’t go at the root of the
thing and cure that, how can you blame the
user? How can you blame the kids who get put
upon and don’t have the will to resist?”
