Collaborative Care
in the Central Okanagan
A Little bit of History!
• Shared care – collaboration between psychiatrist and
physician – program started in Hamilton, Ontario in 1992
• Expanded to include mental health workers shortly after.
• National movement with connections to many disciplines
• “Collaborative Care describes a collaboration between
providers from different services or disciplines who share
the responsibility for the care an individual receives.
Working together they will be able to pool their resources
according to the needs of the individual client, service
availability and their respective skills.” (Vancouver Think
Tank June 2004)
• This project started in 2004 with application for funds
from Health Canada by UBC to fund 3 sites (North Shore
Vancouver, Yukon, & Central Okanagan).

• City situated in the Central Okanagan Valley,
• Surrounded by the Monashee Mountians
• Okanagan Lake running down the centre, between
Vancouver (West 400 km/240 miles) and Calgary
(East 602 kms/307 miles)

300,000 sq miles = size of Germany)
Known for Seasonal Tourism (Summer and
Winter), Fruit Growing, Wine
