<strong>COSIG</strong> Co-Occurring Disorders Conference, Hershey PA, May 15-17, 2006 FRIENDS CONNECTION MOBLE PEER SUPPORT PROGAM Mission The mission of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s Friends Connection Program is to provide social support and healthy community connections in a culturally competent manner for people with co-occurring disorders of mental illness and substance abuse who aspire to a fuller life in a supportive community environment that is free of drug and alcohol abuse FRIENDS CONNECTION MOBILE PEER SUPPORT PROGRAM Philosophy Loneliness, isolation, stigmatization Recovery begins with HOPE Each person has intrinsic interest Non-punitive/non-judgmental Do not spend time with participant when “high” People do better when something to look forward to PROGRAM GOALS Peer Counselors • Provide intensive one on one support • Help a develop clean/sober support network • In vivo peer counseling (self-disclosure) • Empower participants to design their own social rehabilitation recovery plans, activities and supports to enable independent living. • Help participants to reach their full potential for recovery through exploration of social, educational, vocational and leisure interest and by developing necessary social support pursue goals. • Build self-esteem and self-confidence by engaging participants in community based social, educational, and leisure activities of their choice. • Improve the quality of life and alternative for recovery by enabling a broad range of diverse opportunities for community integration for individuals who desire to establish natural community support systems as an option to traditional clinical treatment programs CRITERIA PROGRM PARTICIPANTS • Must have a co–occurring diagnosis • Actively using/or major changes in life • Referral from Case Manager or Resource Coordinator • Desire to participate in program/Not mandated • Length of stay 3 to 18 months STAFFING CRITERIA • Recovery from mental health and or D/A • Two years work experience • High School Diploma or GED 3
