Suicide by Cop (SBC):
DEFINED
• Suicide-by-cop: A form of “victim
precipitated homicide” in which a
suicidal individual engages in
calculated, life threatening and
criminal behavior in order to compel
the police to use deadly force
(a.k.a. Police-assisted suicide)
CA Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST)
Suicide by Cop (SBC):
DEFINED
• “Victim Precipitated Homicide”
– a person’s actions whether knowingly
or unknowingly cause his or her own
death by another

Suicide by Cop (SBC):
DEFINED
• “Death by Indifference”
– people who engage in self-destructive
conduct with no apparent regard for
the consequences of their actions
• “Victim Precipitated Homicide” or “Death
by Indifference” may or may not be SBC
Incident Dynamics
• May be ambiguous, OR
• Overt expression of a wish to die by the
hands of police
• Existence of some other type of written,
verbal or behavioral suicidal
communication
• Acts which, by their very nature, would
cause law enforcement to use deadly
force
