Specific Features In Cooccurring
APD and BPD
• Meet the criteria for APD and the following
seven features:
– Quasi-psychotic thought (transient)
– Self-mutilation
– Manipulative suicide efforts
– Concerns with abandonment, engulfment, or
annihilation

– Treatment regression
– Demandingness or entitlement
– Countertransference difficulties
• People with both disorders report being
more symptomatic than those individuals
with APD alone.

• Persons with BPD, APD, or both often
exhibit strong antisocial personality trends
• There is an overlap in their family patterns
of psychopathy
Other Similarities (Cloninger, 1993;
Siever and Davis, 1991))
• Pathological childhood experiences
• The course of the disorders
• Basic underlying temperaments
– Both rate high on Novelty Seeking Scale
– Those with APD are much lower on Harm Reduction
Scale
– Both have a strong personality dimension of anger
and impulsivity which is tied to a disturbed
neurophysiological regulation of serotonin
APD and BPD (Zanarini & Gunderson, 1997)
• Common Symptomatology:
– Sexual deviance (usually promiscuity)
– Other impulsive patterns
– Interpersonal problems (devaluation,
manipulation, and sadism)
