Diagnosis (Dx):
• Identify the presence of specific DSM-IV
Mental Health (MH) and Substance Use
Disorders (SUD)
• Develop plans for psychosocial
assessment
Assessment:
• Assessment provides a comprehensive
examination of bio-psycho-social needs
and problems including the severity of MH
and SUD D/O’s, conditions associated
with the occurrence of these D/O’s, other
problems, individual motivation, & areas
for appropriate interventions, & is
conducted through interview & specialized
instruments
Goals of Assessment
• Examine the scope of MH & SUD
problems
• Assess the full spectrum of biopsychosocial
problems that may need to
be addressed in
corrections/treatment/rehab.
• Provide a foundation for treatment
planning that incorporates successful and
satisfactory outcomes.
Screening for Co-occurring Disorders--
Signs and Symptoms:
• Unusual affect, appearance, thoughts, or
speech (e.g. confusion, disorientation,
rapid speech).
• Suicidal thoughts or behavior.
• Paranoia.
• Impaired judgment and risk-taking
behavior.
• Prescription drug-seeking behavior.

• Agitation and tremors.
• Impaired motor skills (unsteady gait).
• Dilated or constricted pupils.
• Elevated or lower vital signs.
• Hyperarousal or drowsiness.
• Muscle rigidity.

• Needle track marks/injection sites.
• Inflamed or eroded nasal septum.
• Burns on the inside of the lips.
– An integrated screening approach should be
used to examine relevant criminal justice
information, along with networking between
multiple systems to establish ongoing
professional contacts.
