COSIG Co-Occurring Disorders Conference, Hershey PA, May 15-17, 2006 The Four General Principles of Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2002) 1. EXPRESS EMPATHY – Acceptance (vs. debate) facilitates change • Appreciate the person’s dilemma • Understand that ambivalence is normal • Reflect back their position The Four General Principles of Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2002) 2. DEVELOP DISCREPANCY – The person rather than staff should present the arguments for change • Help the individual minimize or counterbalance the incentives for continuing current behavior by helping them identify positive incentives for alternate behaviors The Four General Principles of Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2002) 3. ROLL WITH RESISTANCE - Resistance is increased by confrontational strategies • Avoid arguing for change • Invite new perspectives rather than impose them • See the individual as the primary source of answers and solutions • See resistance as a signal to respond differently. The Four General Principles of Motivational Interviewing (Miller & Rollnick, 2002) 4. SUPPORT SELF- EFFICACY - A person’s belief in their ability to change is an important motivator • The individual, not staff, is responsible for choosing and carrying out the change • The staff’s own belief in the individual’s ability to change becomes a selffulfilling prophecy Fundamental MI Techniques 1. O –Ask Open-ended questions; 2. A – Affirm the person through non-verbal and verbal behaviors; 3. R –Use Reflective listening skills throughout; 4. S – Occasionally Summarize the conversation. ***Avoid Traps Adaptations for Individuals with Co-Occurring Disorders (Bellack & DiClemente, 1999) Four modules: 1.
